MC PREPARED ME TO SURVIVE TEACHING

On Nov. 15, 2006, the Education Department will host its annual Professional Development Conference for pre-service teachers. The conference is a requirement for all sophomore, junior, and senior education majors. This year's conference will consist of recent Manchester College education graduates who have been teaching for a few years. Students will have the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of elementary as well as content area teachers who recently entered the trenches.

TEACH 21

In spring of 2006, the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) selected Jill Lichtsinn (Media Specialist), Terrie Salupo-Bryant (Chemistry), Heather Schilling (Education), and Stacy Stetzel (Education) to participate in their Teaching for the 21st Century program. Their proposal integrates science and technology in literacy instruction at the elementary school level. In early June, the team attended a meeting in Reston, Va., at the Microsoft offices where they collaborated with 19 other CIC teams selected from around the United States.  The purpose of the program is to help small, independent colleges collaborate and share ideas on how to prepare teachers to teach in the 21st century.  With small budgets, campuses like Manchester College must be creative in how they work toward these goals.

NEW FACULTY JOIN THE DEPARTMENT

Two new faculty members will join the department this fall, and we would like to extend a warm welcome to Vicki Eastman and Stacy Stetzel. Professor Eastman, who is joining us from Ball State University, will be teaching Introduction to Teaching courses as well as Junior High/Middle School.  Professor Stetzel, who has served as an adjunct for the past two years, will teach two of the elementary methods courses as well as Child Development.
