Featured Graduate, Ben Long 12'

Ben is a recent graduate of Manchester College (2012) where he earned his degree in Environmental Studies with a minor in Biology. His time at Manchester provided him with many undergraduate research experiences that were beneficial to him and his professional aspirations. Ben believes that the most valuable experience he had was the two summers he worked as a watershed technician with the middle eel river initiative. Through this grant Ben gained experience in hydrology, fisheries biology, and water quality monitoring.

Recently Ben was selected for a hydrologist technician position with the United States Geological Survey (USGS).  He contributes attributes his ability to compete for this position as a result of his academic and research experience through the Environmental Studies Program at Manchester. He currently lives and works in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania region, and his Job duties include correlating and maintaining 70 federal gage stations which monitor surface water flow and water quality. Ground water monitoring and data entry is also another key aspect of his job. The experiences at Manchester directly apply to what he is doing today. His advice for students is to never give up and listen to your professors advice on what the real world is like and how to get there. Going on the January term trips also helped him when making decisions on where and what he wanted to do, so he suggest these opportunities provide more than just a class, but a different view on the world and maybe future career ideas. Ben is now one of a long list of Manchester College Environmental Studies alumni working in the environmental fields throughout the country.
