Welcome, Bienvenue, Bienvenido, Willkommen, to the Department of Modern Languages!
Come experience both the intellectual and personal enrichment that comes with learning new languages and encountering the diverse cultures that they represent through the Department of Modern Languages at Manchester University. Whether you are interested in a major in French, German or Spanish, or a minor to enhance your primary area of interest—or if you just want to explore another language or culture—the Modern Language faculty is here to help.
Our graduates are able to communicate effectively in the target language, appreciate the literature and culture of countries in which the target language is spoken, and pursue graduate study, international assignments, or employment in the target language. Almost all majors spend a year studying abroad and thus enjoy substantial international experience as well as on-campus courses taught by highly dedicated teachers. Many of our majors are able to complete a second major or a minor outside of our department. Thus students from several areas of interest mingle in our upper level courses. The Modern Language faculty encourages students to participate in undergraduate research symposia and to apply for Fulbright Scholarships and other prestigious post-baccalaureate awards.
By teaching students to participate fully in cultures other than their own, through the acquisition of language skills and cultural awareness, we prepare them for lifelong learning in an increasingly multilingual and multicultural world.
