It's no wonder that Spanish is a popular second or third language: with some 400 million speakers, it's the fourth most commonly spoken language in the world. It is an official language on four continents and is of historical importance elsewhere. The Spanish curriculum at Manchester University stresses proficiency in the Spanish language and encourages students to strive for some mastery of oral and written language skills throughout the program of study. In the U.S., more and more, opportunities are increasing for those who are fluent in both Spanish and English due to the explosion in the Spanish-speaking population.

Manchester University students of Spanish are encouraged to study for a semester or a year in Spain or other Spanish speaking countries. The cultural and language immersion of this requirement enhances the success of our graduates. If you choose to work in one of the social service professions including medicine and education, you'll find your opportunities expand by knowing Spanish.
