Peace Studies: Student Profiles

Felix Ramadan Lohitai

Hello. I am a junior Peace Studies major with a concentration in international & global studies and a minor in Sociology. I'm a member of the Kenapoc Peace Studies coalition, International Students Association and interested in matters of peace, justice and sustainable development. I'm also an associate member of the Smithsonian Institute and Africa Studies Association. I hope to work with Sudanese refugees at the UNCR-Kakuma camp of northwestern Kenya during the summer of 2007.

Sarah Hall:

Greetings.  I am a sophomore transfer student from Pennsylvania.  My major is Peace Studies, with a proposed concentration in Human Rights, Language, and Culture.  I hope to study abroad in Ireland at the National University in Galway during the Spring ’07 term.  My goals after college include an overseas term in Brethren Volunteer Service, and finding a job in a non-profit organization dealing with human rights and the environment.

I became interested in peace and justice through my membership and involvement in the Church of the Brethren.  This past September, I attended my first major anti-war protest in Washington, DC, and also went to the 2005 SOA Vigil in Ft. Benning, Georgia.

I am active in the Peace Studies program, Simply Brethren (a student group), and Cantabile, Manchester’s women’s choir.  I also like to play Ultimate Frisbee, dance, travel, and my most recent hobby – painting pottery.  I enjoy warm sweaters and scarves, and a good cup of tea.

Nick Kauffman:

Shalom!  I’m a sophomore from Goshen, Indiana.  I’m building a Peace Studies concentration in Community Building and Social Action.  In addition to my studies on campus, I spent January 2006 studying at the University for Peace in Costa Rica and am planning on studying abroad in Fall 2007 in Mexico.  My current goal is to stay in college for the rest of my life and major in everything.

I am a lifetime member of the Church of the Brethren, and my passion for peace issues comes from both my faith and from the nurturing and support of my family.  I have always felt strongly about politics, global issues, and human rights, and have shown up at several activist events including the Vigil to Close the School of the Americas in 2004 and 2005.

I am a Resident Assistant on campus, and I meddle in organizations such as Simply Brethren, the Kenapoc peace coalition, United Sexualities and Chapel.  I also co-host a folk music radio show called the Ecclectic Brew, on which we devote two hours a month to music rooted in the Brethren and Anabaptist tradition.  I like playing guitar, running in the rain and drinking hot chocolate (preferably with a bit of mint).

Adam Stokes:

Hello.  I am a sophomore with junior standing from Greenwood, Indiana.  I am majoring in Spanish, Political Science, and Peace Studies with a concentration in international and global issues.  I spent last January studying at the University of Peace in Costa Rica, and plan on spending next January in Mexico and the 07-08 school year at the University of San Francisco in Quito, Ecuador.  I am currently planning on pursuing a Masters degree in Public Administration, and would like to work either for the UN or the US government somewhere overseas.   I have felt an obligation to dedicate myself to public service since high school, and determined that Manchester's Peace Studies program was more exactly what I wanted to study than the general Political Science program more widely available.

I had the opportunity to help in New Orleans last spring break by stripping flooded homes, and would like to repeat the trip next spring if I can. I am Chargé d'affaires of the Manchester Model United Nations, and regularly attend the Kenopocomoco Coalition weekly meetings.  I regularly think about exercising, but my oldest and most treasured hobby is PC gaming, which takes up what I am sure is an unhealthy amount of my time.  I also enjoy books, small fuzzy animals, and spending time with my girlfriend.
