Individualized Interdisciplinary Major
In some situations a student may wish to design a major suited more to that individual than any major offered at MC. Provisions have been made for this through the establishment of an individualized interdisciplinary major. A student presents a program proposal to the Vice President and Dean for Academic Affairs. Individualized interdisciplinary majors must be approved by the Academic Policies Committee. A student electing to complete an individualized interdisciplinary major cannot have another academic major.
General Requirements
- All campus-wide graduation requirements must be satisfied.
- At least one-half of the courses approved for the major must be taken at Manchester College.
- Although academic majors are ordinarily declared by the end of the sophomore year, proposals (applications) for the Individualized Interdisciplinary major must be submitted to the Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs no later than the fall semester of the junior year (prior to earning more than 78 semester hours of credit). Some majors will require planning prior to the end of the sophomore year, for students who expect to graduate in four years.
The Written Proposal
Students are encouraged to consult with an appropriate academic adviser prior to submitting a proposal. Students needing assistance in finding that adviser should contact the Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs. The proposal needs to include:
- a rationale for the major that offers evidence of significant concentration of study in related disciplines;
- a list of courses to be included in the major. [Suggested guidelines include a minimum of 42 semester hours of credit, with one-half of the courses required for the major in 300 and 400 numbered courses]; and
- a statement which indicates why the proposed individualized major is more consistent with the student's post-graduate plans than regularly offered catalog majors and minors;
- a brief description of the Senior Comprehensive Experience.
- an adviser's signature.
