Progressing through the Sociology Major

Choosing an undergraduate major is an important part of your undergraduate education and professional development.  It involves a careful consideration of your career objectives and your academic and social competencies.  This process began before you entered college and continues as you progress in your college education.  At some point you probably unofficially chose sociology for your major and began consideration of the specific focus of your study by talking with faculty members of the department.

The transition to an official major in the sociology program is an important step in completing your choice and in reaching your goals. Your official declaration, the Election of Major Form, is to be filed with the Office of the Registrar prior to enrolling for the Junior year.  To prepare the Election of Major Form you need to have a clear idea of your learning goals so that you can choose the courses for study which will most effectively prepare you to meet those goals.  The following steps are designed to guide you in that process.

     1.  Complete the Introduction to Sociology course and one other course related to the requirements of your intended concentration.

     2.  Choose a member of the faculty to be your academic advisor and
discuss your plans with your advisor.

      3.   PREPARE A WRITTEN STATEMENT OF YOUR CAREER GOALS AND
UNDERGRADUATE LEARNING OBJECTIVES TO REVIEW WITH YOUR
ADVISOR AND TO FILE IN YOUR LEARNING PORTFOLIO.

     4.  Complete the planning guide for your particular concentration and course choices in consultation with your advisor.

     5.  Begin assembling the contents for your Learning Portfolio.

     6.  On the basis of your planning guide course selections, prepare the
Election of Major Form to be reviewed by your advisor and signed by
          the Department Chair.
