8.23.10 - SPARTANS TO HOLD PROSPECT CAMP OCTOBER 3
The Manchester College baseball team will hold their annual Prospect Camp on Sunday, October 3. This clinic will run like a college practice, covering all aspects of the game. Campers can also go through a pro-style tryout camp. Small stations and personal attention are aimed to give campers better skill development.

5.28.10 - FOSTER NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-REGION
The American Baseball Coaches Association named Ty Foster to the First Team All-Mideast Region for the 2010 Year. Foster, a junior first baseman, batted .406 with 49 runs scored, 15 doubles, 14 homeruns and 54 RBI as a junior, and helped MC to a 26-19 season and was named First Team All-Conference in the HCAC. Joining him on the First Team were Trey Forbes at catcher, John Smolinski at the designated hitter spot and Josh Atkinson at pitcher. David Tatham, Justin Scott and Bryce Murphy were named Second Team All-Conference, while Jay Sheets, Corey Marchant and Brad Murphy were named honorable mention.

In their team awards, teammates voted Foster as the Most Outstanding Hitter, Josh Atkinson as the Most Outstanding Pitcher, David Tatham as the Most Outstanding Outfielder, Jay Sheets the Most Improved Player, and John Smolinski received the Peoples' Choice (Spartan) Award.


5.15.10 - SPARTANS FORCE SECOND CHAMPIONSHIP, FALL TO ROSE-HULMAN

Manchester picked up a 13-9 win over Rose-Hulman in the championship game of the HCAC Baseball Tournament, forcing a second game in the double elimination tournament, where MC fell 20-8.

In game one this afternoon, Brett Smalley picked up the win after entering the game in the second inning, where he pitched 3.2 innings. Curt Malley picked up the save with four innings of relief and three strikeouts. Kaz Kalita was 4-5 with an RBI. Ty Foster was 3-4 with five RBI, including a grand slam in the third inning. John Smolinski was 1-2 with three RBI and Brad Murphy added two RBIs with a 2-5 performance.

Rose-Hulman scored five runs in the third and fourth inning to take a 10-1 lead, and an eventual 20-8 win over Manchester in the second championship game. Josh Atkinson took the loss, throwing 3.2 innings on just two day's rest. He allowed 10 runs on 11 hits with a pair of strikeouts. Cory Bifoss led MC with a 2-2 performance, driving in two runs.

Manchester ends the season 26-19.

5.14.10 - MC ADVANCES TO HCAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AFTER 11-9 WIN OVER FRANKLIN
Manchester picked up an 11-9 win over Franklin in Friday night's consolation semi-final round to advance to Saturday's championship game, where they will face Rose-Hulman starting at noon.

Manchester opened the day with a 10-9 loss in 11 innings to Rose-Hulman. Justin Scott threw five innings, giving up eight runs on 10 hits wit ha pair of strikeouts. Curt Mallery added one strikeout in three innings, but it was Bryce Murphy who took the loss with three innings of relief with one strikeout. Trey Forbes was 3-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Ty Foster and Kaz Kalita went 2-4 each.

Manchester scored five runs in the final two innings to take an 11-9 win over Franklin in their second game of the day. Forbes finished the game 3-6 with three runs, Brad Murphy was 3-5 with an RBI and Jay Sheets went 2-4 with three RBI. Mallery picked up the win for MC, throwing the final 4.2 innings with four strikeouts and one run allowed. Cody Schell had the start, giving up seven runs on 10 hits with three K's.

Manchester improves to 28-17 overall and will play in the championship game Saturday versus Rose-Hulman starting at noon. Catch WBKE radio for their coverage of the entire tournament.



5.13.10-SPARTANS PULL OFF 6-3 WIN IN FIRST ROUND OF HCAC TOURNAMENT

Three-seed Manchester scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to pick up a 6-3 win over two-seeded Franklin in Thursday’s opening round game of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament, hosted by Anderson University.

Senior Josh Atkinson picked up the win, throwing 7.1 innings with six strikeouts. He gave up three runs on 11 hits. Bryce Murphy picked up the save, throwing 1.2 innings with a strikeout and two hits allowed.

Kaz Kalita was 2-3 with a run scored, Jay Sheets went 1-2 with two runs scored, and Bryce Murphy finished the game 2-4 with a run. Ty Foster was 1-4 with two RBI and an run scored.

Manchester moves to 24-17 on the year and will resume action Friday at 9:30 a.m. where they will face #4 Rose-Hulman, winners of top-seeded Anderson in a 15-13 contest. Franklin will face Anderson starting at 12:30 p.m. Friday, with the winner of that contest meets the loser of the Manchester/Rose-Hulman game at 4 p.m.

Over the last six years, Manchester has earned the best winning percentage of all college baseball teams in the state of Indiana. Led by Coach Rick Espeset, the Spartans play more than 50 games during their fall and spring seasons, along with a spring trip. The team has averaged 30 wins for the last six years.
  • Coach Espeset was named HCAC Coach of the Year in 1998, 2004 and 2006 and has had nine players sign professional contracts.
  • The Spartans won HCAC tournament titles in 1999, 2002, 2004 and 2005.
  • The team has made four NCAA Tournament appearances in the last six years and, in 2004, advanced to the NCAA Division III World Series, finishing the year ranked seventh in the nation.
  • In 2009, senior first basemen Matty Miller became the seventh All-American for MC baseball.
  • In 12 seasons, Spartan baseball teams have compiled a record of 319-187-1.
