4.16.09 - SMOLINSKI HITS TWO HOMERS AS MANCHESTER DEFEATS DEFIANCE 10-2
Manchester picked up a 10-2 conference win over Defiance on Thursday, scoring two runs in the first and four runs in the eighth inning. MC's John Smolinski finished 3-4 on the day with three RBI and a pair of home runs. Matty Miller was 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. J.T. Podell ended the day 2-4 with an RBI, while David Tatham and Shawn Baker finishing 1-3 with an RBI.

Brett Smalley recorded six strikeouts in nine complete innings. He allowed two runs on seven hits for his first win of the season.

Manchester improves to 15-11 overall, 8-4 in the HCAC and travel to Anderson on Friday and Saturday for a three-game series with the Ravens.

4.11.09 - FRANKLIN TAKES DOUBLEHEADER FROM MC 4-3 AND 11-0
Manchester dropped two games to Franklin on Saturday to give Franklin the three-game conference series following losses of 4-3 and 11-0.

In game one, Curtis Mallery was the losing pitcher, throwing all seven innings with two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Matty Miller led MC with a 2-3 performance and scored two runs. Ty Foster was 1-3 with an RBI, while Corey Oetting and Shawn Baker finished 1-3 and John Smolinski ended the day 1-2.

Manchester was held to just five hits in the 11-0 loss, with Josh Atkinson picking up the loss. Atkinson threw for six innings with seven strikeouts on the day. Smolinski was 2-4 and Jay Sheets ended the day 1-2.

Manchester falls to 14-11 overall, 7-4 in the HCAC. They return to conference action at home on Tuesday as they host Defiance starting at 4:15 p.m.

4.10.09 - MANCHESTER RALLIES OFF FOSTER'S THREE-RUN HOMER TO BEAT FRANKLIN 8-6
Manchester defeated Franklin 8-6 in a battle betwee n two of the top teams in the conference on Friday. Manchester jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings before Franklin scored one run in the fourth. Manchester added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to go ahead 5-1, but in the top of the eighth, Franklin's Paul Strack hit a grand slam to give the Grizzlies a 6-5 lead. Manchester responded in the bottom of the eighth as HCAC Hitter of the Week Ty Foster connected on his 10th homerun of the year and lifted the Spartans to an 8-6 lead.

Colin Denihan pitched 7 1/3 innings, recording five strikeouts in the no decision with Josh Atkinson recording the win with a pair of strikeouts and two runs allowed on two hits.

David Tatham finished 3-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, Matty Miller went 2-4 with two RBI and three runs scored and Foster finished the game 3-6 with four RBI and a run. Josh Buell and Kaz Kalita went 2-3 to lead MC.

Manchester improves to 14-9 overall, 7-2 in the HCAC. They resume action on Saturday with Franklin with a doubleheader scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.


4.8.09 - SPARTANS SCORE SEVEN RUNS IN SIXTH TO PICK UP 18-16 WIN OVER BLUFFTON
Manchester put together a seven-run sixth inning on Wednesday to pick up an 18-16 win over the visiting Bluffton Beavers in conference action. Bluffton jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first inning, and went ahead 14-5 after the top of the fourth before Manchester scored six runs in the fourth and seven in the sxith to go ahead 18-16.

Josh Atkinson picked up the win for MC, throwing in relief for the final four innings, striking out three batters while surrendering just three hits. Ty Foster and Corey Oetting hit a pair of homeruns for the Spartans, as Foster finished 2-6 with four RBI and two runs scored and Oetting ending the day 1-5 with two RBI. David Tatham was 4-5 with three RBI and two runs scored while Josh Buell finished 5-6 with a home run and a triple with five RBI and four runs scored.

Manchester improves to 13-9 overall, 6-2 in the HCAC. They return to conference action on Friday as they host Franklin starting at 4:15 on Friday and resuming play Saturday at noon.

4.4.09 - MC SWEEPS HANOVER WITH TWO WINS SATURDAY
Manchester closed out the three-game series with Hanover College with a pair of wins on Saturday, winning game one 11-2 and game two 14-0.

Ty Foster continued his hot hitting after Friday's walk-off homerun to give MC a 4-2 win, Foster finished the day 7-7 overall with six runs scored and five RBI and three homeruns.

In the 11-2 win, Colin Denihan picked up his second win on the week, recording three strikeouts. Foster finished the day 3 -3 with two homeruns and three RBI. Matty Miller was 2-3 with two RBI and three runs scored, including a homerun and a double. Shawn Baker went 2-4 with a grand slam.

In game two, Josh Atkinson threw a complete shutout game, allowing just five hits with five strikeouts. Foster was 4-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Matty Miller was 2-5 with four RBI, including a grand slam, John Smolinski went 4-5 with two RBI and Josh Buell was 2-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Manchester improves to 12-9 overall, 5-2 in the HCAC. They return to action Monday as the junior varsity team travels to Indiana Tech on Monday and on Tuesday as they host Bluffton.

4.3.09 - FOSTER'S HOMERUN LIFTS MC OVER HANOVER 4-2

Manchester picked up their third conference win of the year Friday following a 4-2 win over Hanover. Manchester trailed 1-0 heading into the bottom of the 8th inning, but scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Hanover tied the ball game in the top of the ninth, but a single by Matty Miller set up Ty Foster for his two-run homer to win the game.

Miller finished the game 2-4 with a run scored, Foster was 1-5 with two RBI. Trey Forbes finished 3-3 with an RBI and J.T. Podell was 1-1 with an RBI.

Curtis Mallery went the distance to record the win, allowing seven hits with five strikeouts. He is now 3-2 on the year.

Manchester improves to 10-9 on the year, 3-2 in the HCAC. They return to action Saturday at home as they face Hanover in doubleheader action starting at 12 p.m. noon.

3.31.09 - SPARTANS POST 7-5 WIN OVER BLUFFTON

Manchester scored two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth to pick up a 7-5 win over Bluffton in HCAC action Tuesday afternoon.

Colin Denihan picked up the win, throwing seven innings with three strikeouts. He allowed four runs on 10 hits. Curtis Mallery recorded the save, throwing the final two innings with one run and two hits allowed with three strikeouts.

Josh Buell was 3-4 on the day to lead MC, recording a triple, with a run scored and an RBI. Corey Oetting hit his seventh homerun of the year with a two-run shot in the fifth inning. Shawn Baker finished 2-4 with a pair of doubles for MC.

Manchester evens their record to 9-9 overall, 2-2 in the HCAC. Join WBKE radio Friday and Saturday as Manchester hosts Hanover College in a three-game weekend series starting at 4:15 p.m. on Friday and continuing Saturday at noon for a doubleheader.

3.26.09 - MC PICKS UP 6-4 WIN OVER U. TEXAS-DALLAS

Manchester closed out their final game of their Spring Break trip to Texas with a 6-4 win over the University of Texas-Dallas on Thursday. Manchester scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning to aid in the win.

Curtis Mallery recorded the win, throwing six innings with five strikesouts recorded. Brenden Hart finished the day 2-4 with two runs scored, Matty Miller was 2-3 with a three-run double. Corey Oetting finished hte day 2-4 with an RBI.

Manchester improves to 8-9 on the year and returns to action Sunday as they travel to Trine for a JV/Varsity contest starting at 1 p.m.

3.25.09 - SPARTANS FALL TO HARDIN-SIMMONS 10-7

Hardin-Simmons scored five runs in the fifth inning and three runs in the bottom of the sixth as they went on to defeat Manchester College 10-7 in action from Texas on Wednesday night.

Senior Colin Denihan recorded the loss for MC, throwing seven innings with 11 hits allowed. Only three of the 10 runs scored were earned as Manchester recorded three errors in the game.

Ty Foster was 2-4 with three RBI and two runs scored as he had an RBI triple and a two run homer for MC. Matty Miller finished the day 3-5 with two runs scored and an RBI as he had a solo homerun in the fifth inning for the Spartans.

Manchester falls to 7-9 on the year, and wraps up their Texas trip Thursday at the University of Texas- Dallas.



3.24.09 - MANCHESTER FALLS TO MCMURRY 20-7

McMurry scored three runs in the fourth, four runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth to help them pick up a 20-7 win over Manchester on Tuesday. Brent Fleshood recorded the loss, throwing 3 1/3 innings with five strikeouts recorded and seven runs scored on eight hits. Brian Tarnowski gave up eight runs on seven hits in two innings of action.

Matty Miller finished 3-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Corey Oetting was 3-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, connecting on a two-run homer and a solo shot in the sixth inning. Shawn Baker finished the day 2-2 to help MC's offense.

Manchester falls to 7-8 on the year and faces Hardin-Simmons on Wednesday night. Live stats and audio available with links above in the schedule box.

3.23.09 - SPARTANS FALL 7-6 IN 12 INNINGS TO MCMURRY
Manchester's baseball team took a 5-0 lead after two innings in Monday's contest at McMurry, but McMurry scored four runs in the bottom of the third and tied the game with one run in the seventh inning to force extra innings. With two outs in the bottom of the 12th, McMurry hit a walk-off homerun to win 7-6.

Brett Smalley pitched 10 straight innings, recording five strikeouts and allowed three earned runs on 11 hits. Beau Shenefield pitched the last 1 2/3 innings, recording two strikeouts and picked up the loss.

Ty Foster led MC with a 2-5 performance, driving in two runs with a run scored. Josh Buell, Shawn Baker and Corey Oetting had an RBI doubles for the Spartans.

Manchester drops to 7-7 overall, and returns to action Tuesday night against McMurry for a 7 p.m. contest, which is available free on McMurry's video stream.

3.21.09 - MANCHESTER CLOSES OUT SERIES WITH ROSE-HULMAN IN A SPLIT
Manchester fell in game one 4-0 but avoided the sweep by defeating Rose-Hulman 11-5 in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday.

In game one, Curtis Mallery took the loss, throwing all seven innings with four recorded strikeouts. Ty Foster led the Spartans going 2-3 with a double.

In game two Josh Atkinson was the winning pitcher, giving up nine hits and five runs with a strikeout. Matty Miller and Kaz Kalita finished 2-4 on the day, each with two RBI and two runs scored. Corey Oetting was 3-6 with an RBI. John Smolinski and David Tatham each had two hits in the win.

Manchester moves to 7-6 on the year, 1-2 in the HCAC. They head to Texas for their Spring Break trip and start play Monday as they face McMurry starting at 7 p.m.

3.20.09 - SPARTANS FALL IN CONFERENCE OPENER 14-1 TO ROSE-HULMAN

Manchester's baseball team dropped their HCAC conference opening game Friday 14-1 at Rose-Hulman. Rose-Hulman scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh and eight runs in the bottom of the eighth to pick up the 14-1 win.

Matty Miller, Corey Oetting and Shawn Baker each had a double, while Ty Foster recorded a single for the fourth Spartan hit of the evening. Colin Denihan recorded the loss, allowing three runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts.

Manchester falls to 6-5 overall, 0-1 in the HCAC. They return to action Saturday at Rose-Hulman for a doubleheader scheduled for a noon start. Catch the game live on 89.5 FM, WBKE.


3.17.09 - MANCHESTER USES 7-RUN 8TH INNING TO PICK UP 13-12 WIN OVER TAYLOR

Trailing 12-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Manchester scored seven runs to pick up a 13-12 win over Taylor in a single 9-inning game. The Spartans started off the inning with a single from David Tatham and a pair of walks for Kaz Kalita and Josh Buell before Matty Miller hit a grand-slam to make it a 12-10 contest. John Smolenski doubled, followed by a Corey Oetting RBI single and Shawn Baker's hit by pitch set up an game tying single from Jay Sheets. Tatham at his second at-bat for the inning drove in the eventual game winning run on a sacrifice fly.

Eric Roof picked up the win for MC, throwing one inning in the eighth while Brenden Hart recorded his first save of the year.

Manchester improves to 6-4 on the year, and returns to action Friday as they begin conference play at Rose-Hulman.

3.15.09 - SPARTANS SPLIT AT MARIAN
Manchester's baseball team split in doubleheader action against Marian on Sunday, falling in game one 6-2 and picking up a 12-7 win in game two.

In the 6-2 loss, Brent Fleshood picked up the loss, throwing four innings with four strikeouts. Beau Shenefield collected four strikeouts in two innings of relief. David Tatham and Josh Buell were 1-3 offensively.

In game two, Josh Atkinson picked up the win in 3 1/3 innings of relief pitching, after coming in for Brett Smalley. Manchester scored four runs in the sixth and five runs in the seventh to pick up the 12-7 win. Matty Miller, John Smolinski, Corey Oetting and Shawn Baker were 3-4. Baker added four RBI, wh ile Oetting and Smolinski added three RBI's each.

Manchester moves to 5-4 on the year and resumes play at home Tuesday as they host Taylor starting at 4:15 p.m.

3.14.09 - MC FALLS TWICE TO IU-SOUTHEAST
Manchester fell in doubleheader action Saturday to IU-Southeast 11-9 and 4-0. In game one, Corey Oetting hit his third homerun in six games as he connected on a grand slam for the Spartans. Josh Atkinson was the losing pitcher in game one, while Curtis Mallory took the loss in game two.

Manchester falls to 4-3 overall and returns to action Sunday at Marian for a doubleheader action.

3.7.09 - SPARTANS SPLIT IN FINAL GAMES OF MYRTLE BEACH TRIP

Manchester split a pair of games as they wrapped up the five game spring trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. Manchester fell to SUNY-Plattsburgh 15-4 in the opener, as Brian Tarnowski took the loss on the mound. Manchester posted a 22-3 win over PSU-Berks in the final varsity game of the day, as Brent Fleshood picked up the win. The JV team lost 10-2 to Delaware Tech.

Manchester moves to 4-1 on the year, and returns to action on Saturday as they travel to IU-Southeast then Sunday as they travel to Marian.

3.6.09 - MANCHESTER POSTS A PAIR OF WINS OVER EASTERN
Manchester College picked up a 23-4 and a 14-9 win over Eastern on Friday, moving to 3-0 on the year while on their spring trip to Myrtle Beach.

In the 23-4 win, Curt Mallory was the winning pitcher for MC. Corey Oetting homered for the Spartans to lead the offensive attack. Oetting went the distance again in the 14-9 win for his second homerun on the day. Dustin Woods recorded his first collegiate homerun for the Spartans. Zach Miller picked up the win in relief pitching.

Manchester returns to action Saturday against SUNY-Plattsburgh and PSU-Berks.

3.05.09 - SPARTANS POST 9-5 WIN IN SEASON OPENER

Manchester College picked up a 9-5 win over Wilkes College on Thursday, as the Spartans traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to play their season opener.

Colin Denihan recorded the win, notching seven strikeouts for the Spartans, with Josh Atkinson closing out the final three innings. Matty Miller recorded a single, double and a homerun. In JV action, Manchester tied with Coastal Carolina 4-4.

Manchester moves to 1-0 on the year and returns to action Friday as they host Eastern in a doubleheader.

5.3.08 - MANCHESTER DROPS TWO TO CENTRE
The Spartan baseball team wrapped up the 2008 season on Saturday dropping a pair of games to Centre College.

In game one, the Spartans fell 9-5 as Matt Holycross was the losing pitcher. Heath Williams, Shawn Baker and Corey Oetting were each 2-4, with Baker recording three RBIs. 

In game two, Centre scored one run in the bottom of the seventh to take a 9-8 victory, giving Joe Egner the loss. Williams was 2-3 and John Smolinski finished the day 1-3 with four RBIs. 

Manchester finished the season 18-22 overall. 

4.29.08 - MANCHESTER DEFEATS BLUFFTON 14-6 TO WRAP UP HCAC PLAY
Manchester College scored nine runs in the top of the sixth to aid in the 14-6 win over Bluffton on Tuesday. The win wraps up the Spartans' 2008 conference season as MC finishes 11-11 on the year. 

Danner Partridge had the hot bat for MC, going 4-6 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored. Josh Buell went 3-5 with a double and a triple and knocked in two runs. John Smollinski was 1-2 with three RBI and a solo home run for the Spartans. 

Derek Hanson picked up his fourth win of the year, throwing five innings of relief after Colin Denihan allowed three hits in the first two innings. Joe Egner had two innings on the mound, striking out five and giving up just two hits. 

Manchester moved to 18-20 on the year and will wrap up the regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled at Centre.

4.26.08 - SPARTANS SPLIT WITH MOUNT ST. JOSEPH
Manchester's baseball team split with Mount St. Joseph in doubleheader action on Saturday. 

In game one, the Spartans posted a 7-0 win as Matt Holycross threw all seven innings, recording seven strikeouts  and allowing just six hits. John Smolinski was 1-3 with two RBI.  Jay Sheets was 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  Shawn Baker ended the game 1-2 while Danner Partridge finished 1-3.

In game two Manchester fell 12-4 as Mount St. Joseph scored 10 runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Derek Hanson was the losing pitcher, throwing 1/3 of an inning with six hits and six runs allowed.  Matty Miller was 3-5 with an RBI to lead the offense.  Kaz Kalita and Ty Foster ended the game 2-4 each. 

manchester moves to 17-20 overall, 10-11 in the HCAC.  They return to conference action Tuesday at Bluffton. 

4.25.08 - MOUNT ST. JOSEPH DEFEATS MC 9-6 IN FIRST OF THREE GAMES
Manchester's baseball team fell to Mount St. Joseph 9-6 in HCAC action Friday evening.  The Mount jumped to a 6-0 lead after three innings of play before the Spartans put a run on the board in the top of the fourth inning.  The Lions put two more runs on in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-1 lead before MC scored five runs in the top of the seventh. 

Colin Denihan was the losing pitcher, throwing three innings with nine hits and four earned runs before being relieved by Joe Egner in the fourth inning.  Egner and Denihan ended with four strikes each.

Offensively Heath WIlliams was 1-5 with two RBI, Danner Partridge went 2-5 with a two run homer for MC, and Jay Sheets finished 2-5 on the day. 

Manchester falls to 16-19 overall, 9-10 in the conference.  MC returns to action Saturday against The Mount in doubleheader action Saturday starting at noon.  Catch the game live on 89.5 FM, WBKE.

4.22.08 - ANDERSON DELIVERS 7-2 LOSS TO MANCHESTER
Manchester returned to action Tuesday in a make-up game against Anderson, falling to the Ravens 7-2 in nine innings.  Curtis Mallery dropped to 5-2 on the year, throwing 6-2/3 innings with four strikeouts. 

John SMolinski led MC with a 2-4 performance, while Jay Sheets went 1-3 with two runs scored.

Manchester falls to 16-18 overall, 9-9 in the HCAC.  They travel to Mount St. Joseph on Friday and Saturday.

4.20.08 - TRANSYLVANIA TAKES THREE GAME SERIES FROM MANCHESTER
Manchester fell to Transylvania 10-5 in HCAC action Sunday, giving Transylvania the three-game sweep over the Spartans. 

Shaun Carrico allowed six runs on seven hits in the first two innings to take the loss.  Derek Hanson threw a pair of strikeouts in 4-2/3 innings of relief, while Wes Bucher recorded four K's in the final three innings of action. 

Danner Partridge was 2-4 for MC, Shawn Baker finished 2-3, Kaz Kalita was 2-5 with three RBI, including a two-run homer, and Heath Williams went 1-3 with an RBI.

Manchester drops to 16-17 overall, 9-8 in the HCAC.  They host Anderson on Tuesday for a make-up contest starting at 4 p.m., followed by a trip to Mount St. Joseph on Friday and Saturday.

4.19.08 - TRANSY TAKES TWO FROM MC
Manchester lost a doubleheader to Transylvania on Saturday, losing 6-5 in game one and 10-6 in game two. 

Manchester scored five run in the bottom of the third and held a 5-3 lead going into the sixth, but Transy scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a 6-5 victory.  Josh Buell was 2-4, Matty Miller went 2-3 and Danner Partridge finished 2-4 with a two-run homer for the Spartans. 

In game two, MC fell 10-6as Transy scored three runs in the third and sixth innings.  Manchecster closed the lead to 8-6 after scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Transy responded with runs in the seventh and eighth innings.  Matty Miller went 3-5, Partridge was 3-5 with four RBI and his second homerun of the day.  Kaz Kalita went 2-5 with a run scored to lead Manchester. 

The Spartans drop to 16-16 overall, 9-7 in the HCAC.  They return to action Sunday against Transylvania starting at 1 p.m.

4.15.08 - SMOLINSKI HITS THREE-RUN HOMERUN AS MANCHESTER DEFEATS DEFIANCE 7-5
Manchester posted a 7-5 win over Defiance on Tuesday as designated hitter John Smolinski hit a three-run shot in the top of the fourth to give Manchester a 5-3 lead.  Defiance scored runs in the fifth and sixth inning to tie the game at 5-5, but Manchester scored two runs in the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. 

Shaun Carrico was the winning pitcher for MC, throwing four innings of relief starting in the third inning.  He recorded four strikeouts with four hits and two runs allowed.  Derek Hanson got his second save of the season with three innings of action and three strikeouts. 

Matty Miller was 2-4 with two RBI, while Smolinski went 1-3 with three RBI.  Kaz Kalita ended the day 1-2 and Adam Piotrowicz went 1-4 to record MC's five hits on the day. 

The Spartans improve to 16-14 overall, 9-5 in the HCAC.  They return to action Saturday as they host Transylvania in doubleheader action.

4.12.08 - OETTING'S WALK-OFF HOMER GIVES MC 3-2 WIN OVER ANDERSON

Corey Oetting's solo homer in the bottom of the seventh gave Manchester a 3-2 win over Anderson in the second game of the three-game series.  Game three has been postponed due to weather conditions. 

Manchester and Anderson scored runs in the second and sixth inning, and in the top of the seventh, the Ravens had runners on first and third before relief pitcher Curtis Mallery forced a flyout to end the inning, setting up Oetting's homerun with one out in the inning. 

Matt Holycross had the start, throwing 5-2/3 innings with five strikeouts and two runs scored on five hits.  Matty Miller and JT Podell finished 2-3 in the game. 

Manchester improves to 15-14 overall, 8-5 in the HCAC.  They travel to Defiance on Tuesday then host Transylvania on Saturday and Sunday.

4.11.08 - ANDERSON HITS WALK-OFF HOMER IN 12TH TO WIN 9-8
Manchester fell to host Anderson University in HCAC action on Friday 9-8 in 12 innings of action. 

Manchester took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth when Anderson scored three runs.  Manchester responded with two runs in the top of the sixth with the Ravens scoring one to make it a 6-4 contest.  Anderson scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run homer to tie the game 6-6 and forced extra innings. 

MC scored two runs in the 11th, only to be matched by Anderson, who went on to score on a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the 12th. 

Derek Hanson picked up the loss, coming in for relief in the 11th inning.  He had two strikeouts and gave up two runs on three hits.  Colin Denhan pitched the first five innings with four runs allowed on six hits.  Shaun Carrico recorded six strikeouts in five innings of action with three runs and five hits given up. 

Offensively, Josh Buell led the way for MC with a 3-5 performance.  He added four RBI and two runs scored.  Shawn Baker w as 4-5 with two RBI.  Jay SHeets went 2-2 with a run scored. 

Manchester falls to 14-14 overall, 7-5 in the HCAC.  They host Anderson in doubleheader action on Saturday, starting at 12 p.m. noon, with WBKE carrying the games live.

4.9.08 - MANCHESTER FALLS TO DIVISION I NOTRE DAME 13-8

Manchester's baseball team fell to Notre Dame 13-8 on Wednesday night from Notre Dame's Frank Eck Stadium. 

The Spartans took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Josh Buell scored on a Matty Miller stolen base.  Notre Dame responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, and scored three runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take an 11-1 lead.  Manchester scored three runs in the top of the sixth, and two more runs in the seventh and eighth innings to make it a 12-8 contest.  The Irish scored one run in the bottom of the eighth to pick up the 13-8 win. 

Both teams collected for 26 hits on the evening, with Matty Miller leading the way for MC with a 3-5 performance, including two RBI and a run scored.  Heath Williams was 1-4 with two RBI, Jeff Mendenhall was 1-3 and Adam King finished the day 1-1. 

Matt Holycross was the losing pitcher, throwing two innings iwth five runs allowed on six hits and two strikeouts.  Derek Hanson and Shaun Carrico had two strikeouts apiece for MC. 

The Spartans fall to 14-13 overall, and travel to Anderson on Friday.

4.5.08 - SPARTANS SPLIT WITH FRANKLIN IN SATURDAY'S DOUBLEHEADER
Manchester lost 8-7 in an extra inning of play, but rallied to pick up an 8-5 win in the second game to close out the three-game series with Franklin College. 

In game one, Derek Hanson suffered the loss after 3-1/3 relief innings of action.  He had two strikeouts with seven hits and three runs allowed.  Matty Miller finished the game 2-5 with a double and an RBI while Jeff Mendenhall went 2-4 with two RBI. 

In game two, Manchester posted an 8-5 win, giving pitcher Curtis Mallery his his fourth win of the season.  Mallery threw four innings with three strikeouts and Shaun Carrico closed out the remaining three innings to pick up the save. 

Danner Partridge was 2-4 with four RBI, two runs scored and a two-run homer for MC.  Matty Miller also homered and was 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.  Josh Buell scored three of the Spartans' runs with an 0-1 performance.

Manchester moves to 14-12 overall, 7-4 in the HCAC. They return to action Friday at Anderson and Saturday at home against the Ravens.

4.4.08 - MANCHESTER FALLS TO FRANKLIN 11-2 IN FIRST OF THREE GAME SERIES
Manchester's baseball team fell 11-2 to host Franklin College in the first of the conference three-game series on Friday. 

Franklin jumped to a 6-0 lead after two innings against MC's Colin Denihan, who suffered his first loss of the year.  Denihan threw four innings with two strikeouts and five hits allowed.  Wes Bucher threw for three innings with five hits and four runs allowed. 

Offensively, Kaz Kalita paced Manchester with a 2-3 performance, while Adam Pitrowicz and Josh Buell finished the day 1-3.  Buell drove in both of Manchester's runs in the eighth inning on a two run homer to put MC on the scoreboard. 

Manchester falls to 13-11 overall, 6-3 in the HCAC.  They return to action Saturday at noon for doubleheader action at Franklin.  Catch the game live on 89.5 FM, WBKE.

4.1.08 - SPARTANS POST 11-10 WIN OVER BLUFFTON IN HCAC ACTION TUESDAY
The Manchester College baseball team moved to 6-2 in HCAC action following an 11-10 win over visiting Bluffton University on Tuesday.  Manchester trailed 4-1 after two innings of play, but HCAC Player of the Week Shawn Baker connected on a grand slam in the bottom of the third to give Manchester a 5-4 lead.  The Spartans scored two in the fifth and three in the eighth in route to the 11-10 win. 

Matt Holycross picked up win, relieving Shaun Carrico after two innings.  Holycross pitched 4-2/3 innings with four strikeouts.  Joe Egner recorded the last out of the game to pick up the save, his first of the year. 

Baker ended the game 3-5 with a home run.  David Tatham was 2-4, Ty Foster went 2-4, Josh Buell went 3-5 and Adam Pitrowicz went 1-3 with a pair of sac bunts and a double. 

Manchester improves to 13-10 overall, 6-2 in league play.  They return to action Friday at Franklin.

3.30.08 - ROSE TAKES GAME THREE OF CONFERENCE SERIES FROM MC, 9-5

Rose-Hulman posted a 9-5 win over Manchester in Sunday's game three of a three-game series with Manchester. 

Curtis Mallery was the losing pitcher, throwing 4-1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Shawn Baker and Matty Miller were both 2-4 on the day with an RBI. 

Manchester falls to 12-10 overall, 5-2 in the HCAC.  They return to action Tuesday at home as they host Bluffton for a 4:15 p.m. contest.

3.29.08 - SPARTANS SPLIT WITH ROSE-HULMAN IN DOUBLEHEADER SATURDAY
Manchester's baseball picked up a 3-0 win in game one, but fell 5-4 in 11 innings in game two to suffer their first conference loss of the year. 

In the 3-0 win, Colin Denihan moved to 4-0 on the year.  He allowed just five hits on the day with three strikouts.  Heath Williams led the way with a 1-3 performance and two RBI.  Shawn Baker also finished 1-3 as did Adam Piotrowicz.  Matty Miller finished 1-2 on the day. 

In game two, Rose-Hulman scored two runs in the sixth to tie the game a 4-4, and forced extra innings in route to a 5-4 win over Manchester in 11 innings.  Shaun Carrico took the loss for MC, relieving Derek Hanson in the 11th inning.  Williams was 2-4 with two runs scored and Shawn Baker finished the day 1-4 with two RBI and two runs scored and hit a two-run homer in the first inning. 

Manchester moves to 12-9 overall, 5-1 in the HCAC.  They resume play on Sunday against Rose-Hulman starting at 1 p.m. Catch live coverage of the game on 89.5 FM, WBKE.

3.27.08 - MANCHESTER SPLITS WITH OHIO NORTHERN

Manchester earned another doubleheader split with Ohio Northern on Thursday, falling in game one 6-0 and winning the second game 2-1. 

Wes Bucher was the losing pitcher in the first game, throwing five innings with three strikeouts and four runs allowed.  Adam King and Heath Miller recorded MC's two hits in the game, eaching going 1-3 at the plate. 

In game two, Josh Buell scored both runs as Manchester posted a 2-1 victory. Eric Roof and Danner Partridge were each 1-2 at bat. 

Manchester moves to 11-8 overall.  They host Rose-Hulman in doubleheader action on Saturday, with the third conference game slated for a 1 p.m. start Sunday.

3.25.08 - SPARTANS POST 21-8 WIN OVER DEFIANCE
Manchester's baseball team improved to 4-0 in conference action Tuesday following a 21-8 win over Defiance College. 

Sophomore third basemen Josh Buell led the way with a 4-5 performance with three RBI and four runs scored. Buell had two doubles and a solo homer for MC.  Danner Partridge went 4-6 with a double and two RBI and a run scored.  Adam Piotrowicz was 3-4 with two RBI, while Shawn Baker finished the day 3-5 with five RBI and four runs scored, hitting a three-run homer and a double.  Kaz Kalita, Matty Miller and David Tatham also had home runs for MC.

Shaun Carrico improved to 2-1 on the year throwing seven innings with six strikeouts and no walks. 

Manchester improves to 10-7 overall, 4-0 in the HCAC. They travel to Ohio Northern on Thursday.
3.22.08 - SPARTANS GET THREE-GAME SWEEP OVER HANOVER FOLLOWING SATURDAY'S DOUBLEHEADER
Manchester's baseball team picked up two key conference wins on Saturday following 2-1 and 6-4 wins over Hanover College.  

In the first game of the doubleheader, Manchester won 2-1 with Matt Holycross picking up the win in seven complete innings.  Holycross allowed four hits with four strikeouts on the afternoon.  David Tatham was 2-3 with a homerun and two RBI's and a run scored, while Heath Williams went 2-4, including two doubles. 

In the second game, Manchester needed two extra innings to post a 6-4 victory. Derek Hanson relieved Curtis Mallery, pitching the last 4-1/3 innings to pick up his second win of the year.  Williams was 4-5 with a double, Matty Miller was 3-4 with a homerun and three RBI, and Danner Partridge finished the day 3-4 with a double and two runs scored. 

Manchester improves their record to 9-7 overall, 3-0 on the HCAC. 


3.21.08 - SPARTANS PICK UP CONFERENCE OPENER WITH 10-4 WIN OVER HANOVER
Manchester's Colin Denihan recorded 11 strikeouts in nine complete innings as Manchester defeated Hanover College 10-4 in the HCAC Conference opener Friday. 

Denihan allowed nine hits with three runs allowed and one walk.  Corey Oetting paced the Spartan offense with a 3-4 performance including a double and three runs scored.  Shawn Baker finished the day 2-4 while Kaz Kalita went 2-5 with two RBI. 

Manchester evens their record at 7-7 overall, 1-0 in the HCAC.   They return to action Saturday at Hanover for a doubleheader. 

3.20.08 - MC SPLITS WITH OHIO NORTHERN, HEADS INTO CONFERENCE ACTION FRIDAY AT HANOVER
Manchester's baseball team split a twinbill with Ohio Northern on Thursday, with Manchester falling in game one 8-4 but rallied to win game two, 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning. 

In game one, Wes Bucher took the loss as he gave up five runs in the fifth inning to give ONU the 8-4 win.  Kaz Kalita was 2-4 and Jay Sheets went 2-2 on the day. 

In the second game, Curtis Mallery picked up the win with one inning of action in the seventh inning as MC posted a 2-1 win. Manchester's Ryan Peterson scored the game winner on a wild pitch with the bases loaded to give the Spartans the win. Corey Oetting was 1-2, while Matty Miller and Heath Williams were 1-3 each. Miller had a solo homer for MC in the first inning.

Manchester moves to 6-7 overall, and travels to Hanover College to start the HCAC season on Friday.  

3.17.08 - MANCHESTER WINS 4-2, FALLS 8-2 TO LAKELAND
Manchester's baseball team remained home on Monday to face Lakeland College and opened with a 4-2 win but fell in the second game 8-2. 

In game one, Corey Oetting finished 2-2 with a pair of RBIs while Matty Miller and Josh Buell ended the game 2-3 with an RBI as Manchester defeated Lakeland 4-2.  Curtis Mallery was the winning pitcher, going all seven innings with a pair of strikeouts and three hits. 

In game two, Josh Atkinson suffered the loss, giving up five earned runs in six innings of action as Manchester lost 8-2.  Six Spartans recorded one hit each in the contest with Josh Buell and David Tatham recording RBIs. 

Manchester moves to 5-6 on the year and returns to action Tuesday at Indiana Wesleyan.

3.16.08 - MC SPLITS WITH TRI-STATE IN HOME OPENER

Manchester's baseball team split a doubleheader with Tri-State University on Sunday for MC's season home opener on Gratz Field. 

In game one, Manchester won 4-2 as Shaun Carrico picked up the win with seven complete innings and four strikeouts.  Jay Sheets and Josh Buell were 1-2 with an RBI to lead MC. 

In game two Joe Egner took the loss as Manchester fell to the Thunder 3-0.  Buell went 2-3 with Kaz Kalita, Corey Oetting and Shawn Baker going 1-3 at bat.

Manchester moves to 4-5 on the year and returns to action Monday at home as they host Lakeland for an 11 a.m. start.

3.15.08 - SPARTANS SPLIT WITH TAYLOR
Manchester's baseball team returned to action after a two-week break to split with Taylor University in doubleheader action. 

In game one, Colin Denihan picked up his second win of the year in a 4-2 win.  Denihan recorded five strikeouts in six innings of action, allowing just four hits while Derek Hanson picked up the save.  Shawn Baker was 2-3 with an RBI and Josh Beuell went 1-3 with two RBI. 

In game two, Taylor scores two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up a 2-1 win over Manchester.  Wes Bucher took the loss for MC, facing four batters in the seventh.  Corey Oetting and JT Podell were each 1-2 at bat, with Oetting picking up an RBI. 

Manchester moves to 3-4 on the year, and will travel to Tri-State on Sunday, weather permitting.

3.1.08 - ESPESET GETS WIN 300 AS MANCHESTER GOES 1-1 ON FINAL DAY OF MYRTLE BEACH TRIP
Manchester College baseball coach Rick Esepset picked up his 300th win Saturday following Manchester's 12-2 win over Rivier in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday from Myrtle Beach, S.C.  Derek Hanson picked up the win for MC.  Manchester lost the second game of the afternoon to Wesley, 6-4. 

They move to 2-3 on the year, and return to action Saturday at Huntington, weather permitting.

2.29.08 - SPARTANS SPLIT WITH WIN OVER ALMA AND LOSS TO CONCORDIA
Manchester's baseball team split a twin bill on Friday following a 10-3 win over Alma and a 7-0 loss to Concordia from Myrtle Beach, S.C. 

Colin Denihan picked up his first win of the year, throwing seven strikeouts in seven innings of action against Alma.  Kaz Kalita went 3-4 with a triple while Corey Oetting went 2-4 with a triple.   Manchester lost 7-0 to Concordia with Heath Williams, Josh Buell and Andy Hughes collecting all three of Manchester's hits.  Shaun Carrico picked up the loss on the mound. 

Manchester drops to 1-2 on the year, and returns to action Saturday as they face Rivier and Wesley to close out their southern trip.

2.28.08 - MANCHESTER DROPS SEASON OPENER 4-2
Manchester's baseball team fell in their season opener to Concordia (MI) 4-2 in action from Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Thursday.  Matt Holycross gave up two runs in 6 2/3 innings and picked up the loss.  Shawn Baker went 2-3 to lead the Spartans.  Heath Williams went 2-4 while Josh Buell went -3 with a double and a run scored. 

Manchester's JV posted an 11-7 win over Alma's JV team.

Manchester returns to action Friday as they will play Concordia in varsity/junior varsity action starting at 1 p.m.

2.26.08 - SPARTANS PICKED FIFTH IN HCAC PRE-SEASON POLL, START SEASON THURSDAY IN SOUTH CAROLINA
Rick Espeset enters his 12th year as the head coach for the Manchester College baseball program.  Despite losing two former HCAC Players of the Year in Scott Tarnowski and Zac Bireley to graduation from last year's 20-19 team, he has a lot of high hopes with his six returning position players and two starting pitchers.  Coach Espeset is just two wins shy of his 300th win, as he has an overall career record of 298-168-1 and is Manchester's all-time winningest coach.

Leading the way for Manchester is junior catcher and First Team All-Conference selection Matty Miller.  Miller hit .365 for MC last year with six home runs and 25 RBI.  Senior outfielder Danner Partridge also returns and was an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection last year.  He batted .278 last season and has led the team in hit by pitches the past three years, and his 18 a year ago brings him to 63 total.   

Shortstop Kaz Kalita returns for his sophomore year after batting .323 last year with 10 RBI.  Outfielder Josh Buell  also returns after starting in 36 contests last year.  He hit .292 with 22 RBI and 40 hits. 

On the mound, Manchester lost a pair of All-Conference selections in Tyler Wolfe and Marcus Miller, but return junior Colin Denihan and senior Derek Hanson, who saw considerable action in the starting rotation last year.  Denihan had a 3-5 record last year in 12 appearances and a 3.15 ERA.  He tallied 35 strikeouts with a .267 opponent batting average. Hanson had a 1-3 record in 11 appearances with two saves and 28 strikeouts in 40 innings of action. 

Manchester begins their season Thursday, Feb. 28 as they travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for five games with Alma, Rivier, Wesley and Concordia (MI).

1.19.08-HITTING SCHOOL SPOTS STILL AVAILABLE, INSIDE PITCH NOW ONLINE
The annual Manchester College hitting school dates are scheduled for February 10, 17 and 24. 

The three consecutive Sunday clinics provide boys and girls in grades K-12 of individualized instruction on the fundamentals of hitting. The camp runs from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. each Sunday.

DECEMBER ISSUE OF INSIDE PITCH NOW AVAILABLE, WINTER CAMP SLOTS STILL OPEN
Manchester College baseball coach Rick Espeset has released the December issue of The Inside Pitch.  Currently in its 14th year of production, The Inside Pitch provides parents, fans and recruits with up to date news about the program as well as player biography. 

Coach Espeset has announced the dates for his annual Winter Baseball Camps and Hitting School.

A Defensive Camp will take place December 27 from 9 a.m. - noon, followed by the first of two Hitters Camps scheduled from 1 - 4 p.m. later that day.  The second Hitter Camp will be on Friday, Dec. 28 from 9 - noon, followed by a Pitchers/Catchers Camp from 1-4 p.m. that afternoon.  A High School Prospect Camp will be held Saturday, Dec. 29 from 9 - noon.

The Hitting School will take place on three consecutive Sundays starting Feb. 10 from 2-4 p.m. and continue on Feb. 17 and Feb. 24.

9.1.07-SPRUNGER NAMED NEW ASSISTANT COACH
Dan Sprunger joins the Manchester College baseball coaching staff after spending one year as an assistant coach at Franklin College.  Sprunger was a four time letter winner for Manchester College's baseball program, compiling a career record 23-4, with 120 strikeouts and an opponent batting average of .258 in 41 appearances.  He was part of the top four most winning teams in Manchester College history, including the 2002 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional champions and two HCAC Conference championship teams.  He graduated from Manchester College with a degree in Art in May 2006.  He will work with the Spartan pitchers this season. 

5.15.07-TARNOWSKI NAMED LEAGUE MVP, THREE OTHERS NAMED ALL-CONFERENCE
Manchester College’s Scott Tarnowski (Roanoke, IN/Huntington North) has been named the 2007 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player in baseball. The senior outfielder helped guide the Spartans to a berth into the HCAC tournament.

Tarnowski, a first-team All-HCAC selection in 2004, 2005, and 2006 hit .414 (29-for-70) during conference play and delivered 22 RBI, 22 runs, four doubles, four home runs, and 13 stolen bases. He had a .643 slugging percentage against conference foes and a .511 on-base percentage.

Overall in 2007, Tarnowski hit .427 (61-for-143) and had 45 runs, 46 RBI, seven doubles, 10 home runs, and 27 stolen bases. He finished with a slugging percentage of .727 and an on-base percentage of .505.

Others being named First Team All-Conference include Matt Talarico, Matty Miller and Tyler Wolfe.  Zac Bireley and Danner  Partridge were named Second Team while Colin Denihan, Kaz Kalita and Josh Buell were Honorable Mention.

5.11.07-SPARTANS SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE WITH TWO LOSSES ON FRIDAY
Manchester's baseball season came to a close on Friday with a pair of losses in the second day of action from the HCAC Conference Tournament. 

In game one on Friday, Manchester lost 5-3 to Mount St. Joseph, with Colin Denihan  taking the loss.  He gave up five runs on six hits with two strikeouts.  Derek Hanson threw for 1.1 innings with a strikeout.    Kaz Kalita and Heath Williams were 1-3, as was Josh Buell, with a run solo homer. 

Manchester lost 11-2 in the consolation round to Anderson.  Marcus Miller was the losing pitcher for MC, throwing 2 innings with four runs allowed on seven hits.  Shaun Carrico added three strikeouts in five innings with six runs and 11 hits allowed.   Leading hitters for MC were Scott Tarnowski and Matty Miller, each 2-4, and Kalita, who was 1-3. 

Manchester ends the season 20-19 overall.  

5.10.07-SPARTANS POST 5-2 WIN IN FIRST GAME OF HCAC TOURNAMENT
Manchester College senior pitcher Tyler Wolfe went the distance on Thursday to help Manchester post a 5-2 upset over top seeded Transylvania in the opening game of the HCAC Conference Tournament. 

Wolfe threw nine complete innings for his sixth win of the year.  He gave up two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.  

Offensively, Matt Talarico was 2-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.  Josh Buell was 1-5 with a two RBI triple in the eighth. 

Manchester, currently 20-17 on the year, advances to the second round of play where they will face Mount St. Joseph at 12:30 p.m. 

5.7.07-SPARTANS ANNOUNCE SUMMER CAMP DATES
Manchester College baseball coach Rick Espeset has announced dates for his summer baseball camps. 

An All Skills Camp will run from June 11-14 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. for children ages 7-14.  A hitting clinic will take place on June 19-20 from 9-11:30 a.m. for children 71-0 and for children 11-14 from noon-2:30.  A pitching clinic will take place on June 21 from 9-11:30 a.m. for ages 7-10, and for ages 11-14 from noon-2:30 p.m.  The same format will carry over on June 22 for a catcher's camp, followed by another All Skills Camp from July 9-12 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.  For more information download the enrollment form or contact Coach Rick Espeset by email or at 260-982-5034.

5.4.07-SPARTANS SPLIT WITH ANDERSON, AWAIT ROSE-HULMAN/MOUNT ST. JOSEPH SERIES TO DETERMINE POST SEASON PLAY
Manchester's baseball team finished the regular season 19-17 overall, 11-9 in the HCAC following a split in conference action at Anderson on Friday. 

Anderson took game one by the score of 2-1 as Colin Denihan fell to 3-4 on the year in six complete innings.  He allowed just two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.  Scott Tarnowski was 2-3 with a run scored and Corey Oetting also went 2-3. 

In game two, Manchester scored four runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the fifth in route to an 8-6 victory.  Marcus Miller picked up the win for MC, allowing six runs on eight hits with five strikeouts.  Derek Hanson picked up his second save of the year in 3.1 innings of relief.  He added three strikeouts in the game.  Shawn Baker was 2-4 with an RBI and a run, Scott Tarnowski was 1-4 with three RBI and Matt Talarico finished 2- with two RBI and two runs. 

Manchester awaits the results of the Rose-Hulman/Mount St. Joseph series to determine their fate in getting a berth to the HCAC Conference Tournament.  Rose-Hulman fell to MSJ 3-2 in game on Friday.  Manchester needs a split or a sweep by Mount St. Joseph to qualify for the tournament. 

5.3.07-ANDERSON TAKES FIRST GAME OF SERIES IN A 4-2 WIN OVER MANCHESTER
Manchester's baseball team dropped the first of three games to Anderson 4-2 on Thursday.

Anderson scored runs in the first and second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Manchester responded with a run in the third, but a two-run inning in the sixth by the Ravens upped their lead to 4-1 before Manchester scored one in the eighth inning. 

Tyler Wolfe dropped to 5-3 on the year.  He gave up four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.  Matt Talarico ended the game 2-5 for MC with an RBI.   Danner Partridge was 1-3 with an RBI.  Zac Bireley also was 1-3 and Kaz Kalita was 1-2.

Manchester travels to Anderson for a doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday to wrap up the regular season. 

4.28.07-SPARTANS SPLIT WITH FRANKLIN, TAKE SERIES WITH 5-4 WIN IN GAME 2
Franklin scored six runs in the sixth inning in route to a 10-6 win over Manchester in game one, but pick up the series sweep over the Grizzlies with a 5-4 win in game two. 

In game one, Marcus Miller was the losing pitcher, allowing nine runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.  Scott Tarnowski and Matt Talarico were 3-4 each.  Tarnowski added four RBI, a homer and a run scored while Talarico added three runs, a triple and an RBI.  Kaz Kalita was 2-3 with two runs and Matty Miller went 2-4.

In game two, Manchester scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to win 5-4.  Colin Denihan wins his third game of the year, allowing eight hits and four runs with six strikeouts.  Derek Hanson recorded his first save of the season.  Talarico was 2-4 with two RBI, Tarnowski was 1-2 and Jordan Adams had a two RBI double to score the go ahead runs. 

Manchester improves to 18-15 overall, 10-7 in the HCAC.  They host Anderson on Thursday.

4.27.07-TARNOWSKI HOMERS TWICE, MANCHESTER DEFEATS FRANKLIN 11-3

The Spartan baseball team posted an 11-3 win over Franklin in action from Gratz Field on Friday. 

Scott Tarnowski hit a pair of home runs for the Spartans, who scored three runs in the second and four in the fourth in route to the 11-3 win.  He ended the game 2-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.  Zac Bireley was 2-5 and Danner Partridge finished the game 2-4 with three RBI and a run. 

Tyler Wolfe improved his record to 5-2 overall as he pitched a complete nine innings.  He allowed three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts on the afternoon.
