SPARTACUS
After 12 years of faithful service to Manchester College, mascot Sami Spartan has retired, making way for the new College mascot, Spartacus! The younger, fitter and more energetic successor was unveiled at the 2008 Manchester College Bankers' Classic and his name was selected by a campus-wide contest that yielded over 200 entries.
Along with appearances at Spartan athletic events, Spartacus will make appearances at events sponsored by the Office of Student Activities, the Office of Alumni Administration and the Office of Admissions. Approximately 10 students received training and will share time acting as the new mascot for the school year.
According to history books, the origins of Spartacus date back to circa 109 B.C. - 71 B.C. He was an enslaved prisoner who became a leader in an uprising against the Roman Republic. His legacy and leadership has been an inspiration to others, both past and present.
Manchester's Spartacus is available for any campus event or function and can be reached by email at spartacus@manchester.edu .
