
9.2.10 - FOOTBALL DROPS SEASON OPENER 55-7 TO TRINE
Manchester fell to
host Trine University 55-7 in front of a crowd of 5,187 fans as both teams opened their 2010 season.
Trine
opened the game with a 27-0 lead before MC's Justin Minnich scored on a five yard run. A Kyle Evans extra point kick made it a 27-7 Trine lead, which stretched to a 34-7 lead at the half.
Minnich ended the game 8-21 passing with 109 yards and an interception. Shelby Weeks rushed for 44 yards, while Adam Schell and Nick Williams gained 36 and 27 yards each.
Bobby McClintock had one catch for 50 yards, which set up the Minnich touchdown. John Kimmel had two catches for 35 yards and Kurt Monix added one catch for 24 yards.
Brecken Kennedy had 13 total tackles on the night. Ryan McKee, Andrew Totheroh and Dylan Snyder added six tackles for the Spartan defense.
Manchester travels to Kalamazoo on Sept. 11 for a 1 p.m. contest.
8.15.10 - KENT, HARRIS NAMED ASSISTANT COACHES
Head football coach Shannon Griffith has named Sam Kent and Chris Harris as assistant coaches to the football staff this season.
Kent returns to Manchester College after spending one season as an assistant football coach at MacMurray College. Kent was a four year starter and letterwinner for the Spartans at the defensive line position. Kent was a two-time Second Team All-Conference selection for the HCAC and a two-time honorable mention All-Conference recipient. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education from Manchester in 2008, and was named the Exercise and Sports Science's Major of the Year in 2008. He will work with the defensive line this season.
Harris joins the Spartan coaching staff and brings a wealth of knowledge and coaching experience to the football program. Harris was a four-year letterwinner at his hometown Cumberland College, where he was an offensive and defensive lineman. After obtaining double major degrees in Movement and Leisure Studies and Public Health from Cumberland, he spent one season as a defensive line coach at Muhlenburg College. He spent three years as an offensive and defensive lineman coach at Elsworth Community College, and another three years as the offensive line coach at Iowa Wesleyan University. He spent one year with the Minot State University (ND) football program as an OL coach before taking a job with Beloit College as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator in 2008. Harris is a candidate for his master's degree in Education and Human Performance. He and his wife, Wendy Vermillion, reside in North Manchester.
8.14.10 - 96 SPARTANS REPORT TO TRAINING CAMP, ESTEPP RECEIVES PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN RECOGNITION
Head football coach Shannon Griffith welcomed 96 players to the first day of summer preseason camp on Friday, as the first day of fall sports practices got underway at Manchester College. Griffith, in his seventh year as head coach for MC, welcomes 42 incoming first year students to the team.
Senior offensive linemanChase Estepp
(Nappanee, Ind./Northwood) has been named a Second Team Preseason All-American by both D3PRODAY.com and the D3 Senior Classic selection committee.
Manchester heads into the season picked fourth in the HCAC Preseason polls. MC finished the year 5-5 overall, 5-2 for a second place finish in the conference standings. MC led the conference in rushing defense at 78.8 yards per contest.
Manchester starts their season Thursday, September 2 as they travel to Trine University.

Under the direction of seventh-year coach Shannon Griffith and his staff, Spartan football is being thoroughly revitalized. Coach Griffith brings 15 years of college coaching experience at NCAA Division I and II schools. An Indiana All-State quarterback at Fort Wayne's Northrop High School, Griffith continued his football career at Ball State, where he helped lead the Cardinals to a Mid-American Conference Championship and a spot in the California Raisin Bowl.
