
2.2.08 - MC PLACES 21st AT WHEATON INVITE
Manchester College junior Matt Palladino took seventh place in the 141 pound weight class at the 2008 Pete Willson Wheaton College Wrestling Invitational. Palladino finished the tournament with a 3-2 overall record.
Four other Spartans picked up wins throughout the tournament, but were eliminated in the double-elimination format on Friday. Winners for MC included Jonathan Pearson (1-2 overall) at 149, Byron Sweet (1-2 overall) at 157, Joel Sherer (2-2 overall) at 165 and Nate Hodges (2-2 overall) at 184.
Manchester returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 9 at the Mid-states Wrestling Conference meet hosted by Rose-Hulman starting at 9 a.m.
1.26.08 - MC FINISHES 2-2 AT MONON BELL DUALS
Manchester's wrestling team finished the 2008 Monon Bell Dual meet with a 2-2 record.
In the opening match of the day, MC fell to Mount St. Joseph 35-15 with wins coming from Eracleo Vallejo at 125, Joel Sherer at 165 and Spencer Fulk at 285 pounds.
Manchester lost 30-12 to Muskegon in the third round of action. Winners for MC included Austen Ruich at 133, Sherer at 165 and Fulk at heavyweight.
In their third match of the day, Manchester posted a 25-15 win over Knox, as Vallejo picked up a win at 125, as did Ruich at 133, Johnathan Pearson at 149, Sherer at 165 and Nate Hodges at 184.
In the final match of the day, Manchester won 48-12 over Wilmington. Vallejo, Ruich, Matt Joyce, Pearson and Byron Sweet all won by forfeit, as did Brandon Gingras at 174 and Nate Hodges at 184. Fulk picked up his second pin of the day for MC.
Manchester returns to action at the Wheaton Invite this coming Friday and Saturday.
1.19.08 - VALLEJO NAMED MOST OUTSTANDING WRESTLER, MC 10th AT SPARTAN MAT CLASSIC
Manchester College senior Eracleo Vallejo finished the 2008 Manchester College Spartan Mat Classic 3-0 with two wins by technical fall to win the 125 pound weight class, and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler for the second straight year. He is currently the top-ranked wrestler at 125 pounds in the latest Division III Brute/Adidas polls.
Other place winners for Manchester were Byron Sweet, who took fifth place at 157, and Jason Ray, who placed sixth at 125 pounds.
Manchester returns to action next weekend at the Monon Bell Duals, hosted by Wabash College.
1.12.08-VALLEJO WINS AT NORTH CENTRAL INVITE, SPARTANS PLACE 9th OVERALL
Manchester College took ninth place out of 16 teams at the North Central Invitational over the weekend.
125 pounder Eracleo Vallejo took first place with a 4-0 record in the two-day tournament. He defeated Joe Norton of North Central 5-4 in the championship match. Nate Hodges took sixth place at 184 pounds and was the only other place winner for MC.
Manchester returns to action this coming Saturday as they host the annual Spartan Mat Classic starting at 9 a.m.
1.4.08-SPARTANS COMPETE AT MIDWEST CLASSIC
Six Spartan wrestlers took part at the Midwest Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
Austen Reich finished the tournament 0-2 at 133 pounds, as did Torryn Hefellfinger at 149, Byron Sweet at 157, Jordan Knox at 184 and Tyler Lathon at heavyweight. Joel Sherer ended the tournament 1-2 overall at 165 after falling in the opening match of the day, but won his second match in the consolation brackets before being eliminated.
Wrestling action resumes next Friday and Saturday as Manchester travels to the North Central Invite.
12.15.07-SPARTANS PLACE 13TH OVERALL, VALLEJO AND PALLADINO TAKE SECOND
Manchester's wrestling team placed 13th out of 18 schools in Saturday's Ohio Northern Invitational. Eracleo Vallejo took second place at 125 pounds, as did Matt Palladino at 141 pounds.
Vallejo lost in a 3-2 decision in the championship match, while Palladino fell 11-8 in the championship match at 141 pounds.
Manchester returns to action the first weekend of 2008 as they travel to the Midwest Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
12.8.08-SIX SPARTANS PLACE AT LITTLE STATE, VALLEJO NAMED OUTSTANDING WRESTLER OF THE TOURNAMENT
Six Spartan wrestlers placed at the 2007 Little State Wrestling Invite, hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
Senior Eracleo Vallejo placed first overall at 125 pounds and was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler. Matt Zickafoose took second place at 197 pounds, while Joel Sherer placed third overall at 165.
Jason Ray placed fifth at 125 pounds, Austen Ruich took sixth at 133 and Rob Osborne placed seventh at 197.
Manchester returns to action Saturday, December 15 at the Ohio Northern Open.
11.30.07-SPARTANS FALL TO TRI-STATE 30-17
Manchester's wrestling team fell to visiting Tri-State 30-17 in dual meet action Friday evening. Manchester opened up with a pair of wins from Eracleo Vallejo, as he pinned Levi Mundy in 4:45 at 125 points, and John Sheets, as he was a 5-4 winner over Josh Billau at 133 pounds. Joel Sherer picked up a win by pin in 4:08 over Ryan Lineberry at 165 pounds and Rob Osborne was a 3-0 winner over alex Fleet at 197.
Manchester got wins in the exhibition matches from Austen Ruich at 133, Matt Joyce at 157 and Tyler Lathon at 197.
Manchester returns to action next Friday and Saturday at the Little State wrestling meet, hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
11.17.07-THREE PLACE AT CONCORDIA (WI) OPEN
Manchester College had three wrestlers place at the 2007 Concordia Open on Saturday. Eracleo Vallejo placed first at 125 pounds with a 4-0 record. John Sheets finished the day 4-1 overall at 133 pounds for a second place finish, while Matt Palladino took third place with a 5-1 record at 141 pounds. Other top results from the meet included Ben Scalise with a 2-2 record and Byron Sweet, who finished the day 3-2 overall.
Manchester returns to action on Friday, Nov. 30 as they host Tri-State in dual meet action.
11.12.07-VALLEJO, SHEETS GO 1-2 AT MICHIGAN STATE OPEN
Manchester College seniors Eracleo Vallejo and John Sheets each finished 1-2 at the Michigan State Open on Sunday. Vallejo, currently ranked third in the nation at 125 pounds in the preseason national rankings, fell to Brandon Precin of Northwestern, but battled back to defeat Desmond Moore of Penn State 9-6. He fell to Drew Forshey of North Carolina by pin for his second loss of the day.
John Sheets lost his opening match to Eric Metzler of Northwestern, but bounced back to pin Owen Schafer of Ohio State in 1:40 before falling to Ricky Deubel of Edinboro in the consolations to be eliminated.
Manchester returns to action Saturday at the Concordia Open.
11.5.07 COLLEGE TO CELEBRATE SERVICE OF RETIRED ATHLETIC DIRECTOR TOM JARMAN WITH SUNDAY, DEC. 2 DINNER
Manchester College will recognize the leadership and coaching of Tom Jarman with a Sunday, Dec. 2 reception and dinner. Jarman retired in August as director of athletics, head wrestling coach and associate professor of exercise and sport sciences.
He served the College 18 years, expanding its Division III athletics program, producing nationally recognized wrestlers and entering six halls of fame.
The Department of Athletics and the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences are inviting Spartans current and past, athletics officials, coaches Jarman has mentored and other alumni and friends to the celebration.
A reception is 4:30 to 5 p.m. on Dec. 2 in the upper level of the College Union, followed by dinner from 5-6 p.m. Reservations for the $20 dinner are requested by Nov. 16.
Alumni and members of the College community are invited to share photos, letters and notes for display at the dinner and a memory book. 8.29.07 JARMAN HONORED AS LIFETIME MEMBER OF NATIONAL WRESTLING COACHES ASSOCIATION
Former Manchester College wrestling coach Tom Jarman received a Lifetime Honorary Membership to the National Wrestling Coaches Association in a unanimous vote from the full board of the NWCA on August 16.
Jarman retired from his position as wrestling coach and athletics director on September 1 and has been an active member of the NWCA for over 40 years. he left Manchester with an overall record of 414-144-1 and is a member of the Division III Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame as well as five others.
“Tom Jarman is a throwback coach, but he’s always been at the forefront of mentoring wrestlers as students, athletes and future coaches,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “His service to wrestling has been instrumental wherever he’s coached, whether it is at the Division I level at Northwestern or most recently at Manchester, where he coached the last 18 years.”
Jarman’s success included eight straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championships from 1992-1999 and then titles in 2002-04 and again in 2007. In 12 of the 18 years Manchester won the conference, Jarman was named Coach of the Year seven times and Midwest Regional Coach of the Year four times, most recently in 2004.
“Tom has been a very industrious leader,” said NWCA President Ron Mirikitani. “The entire group we voted in this year was incredibly worthy and we’re honored to be recognizing them as Lifetime Honorary Members of our organization.”
John Sacchi, Dan Hinkel, and Tony Iasiello were also enshrined with the honor.
The National Wrestling Coaches Association, established in 1928, is a professional organization dedicated to serve and provide leadership for the advancement of all levels of the sport of wrestling with primary emphasis on scholastic and collegiate programs. The membership embraces all people interested in amateur wrestling.
The NWCA, through its organizational structure, promotes communication, recognizes achievement, recommends rules and regulations, sponsors events, and serves as an educational and informational source. Additionally, the NWCA strives to foster the sportsmanship and integrity that are the cornerstones of athletic competition.
7.2.07-BURLINGAME NAMED HEAD WRESTLING COACH
Following the retirement of 18-year wrestling coach Tom Jarman, Matt Burlingame has been appointed as the Spartans new head wrestling coach. Burlingame spent one season with the Spartans as an assistant coach during the 2006-07 season.
Burlingame has over ten years of coaching experience and wrestled for Division I Virginia Tech before graduating in 1995. He has served as a coach at the high school level in Kansas, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
"Matt is a great fit for the Manchester College wrestling program," says Jarman, who also retires as athletic director at the end of this month. "He is a true student of the sport and will bring continued success to Manchester College's athletic department."
"I am extremely excited about the challenges this new opportunity brings," adds Burlingame of his new position. "My vision for this program is simple -- be the best! We are not going to miss a step and continue doing what has made Manchester wrestling great. We're going to keep doing things right."
Burlingame will also serve as an instructor within the Exercise Sport and Science department as well as Director of Intramurals.
3.3.07-VALLEJO PLACES FIFTH AT NATIONALS, MANCHESTER IN 28TH PLACE
Manchester College sophomore Eracleo Vallejo (Syracuse, Ind./Wawasee) finished fifth out of the 18 wrestlers competing at the NCAA Division III National championships hosted by Loras College. Manchester College currently stands in 28th place with three weight classes left to finish.
Vallejo ended the day Friday with a loss to top-seeded and eventual national champion Nate Hensen of Luther before falling into the consolation round, but picked up a win over Felipe Queiroz of Wilkes to advance to the All-American rounds on Saturday. Vallejo defeated seven-seed Jake Oster 10-6 in Saturday's opening match to advance to the consolation semi-finals, where he lost 12-6 to #2 seed Brandon McDonough of Johnson and Wales.
In the consolation finals, Vallejo defeated Kyle Flickinger of York College 7-4 to take fifth place overall, and becomes the 14th Manchester College wrestler to earn All-American honors. Vallejo ends the year with an overall record of 32-7.
3.2.07VALLEJO SEEDED EIGHTH AT NATIONALS WINS TWO OF THREE MATCHES OF THE DAY, HOOVER FALLS IN CONSOLATION BRACKET
Manchester College sophomore Eracleo Vallejo has advanced to the championship quarterfinals after one win in the morning session of the NCAA Division III National Tournament, hosted by Loras College. Vallejo is an 8 seed in the tournament, and opened up with a bye in the first round, then defeated Philip Greene of Merchant Marine Academy 12-2. Session two of the afternoon had him facing number one ranked Nate Hansen of Luther College, where he fell by pin in 2:54. In the consolations, Vallejo defeated Felipe Queiroz of Wilkes 19-3 to advance to the All-American round, where he can place anywhere from third to eighth place.
Senior Joe Hoover dropped to the consolation bracket after a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Gerald Bowne of York College. Bowne had the riding time advantage to receive the extra point for the win. Hoover lost in the consolations 9-7 to Ben Youel of North Central to be eliminated from the tournament
2.17.07-TWO SPARTANS ADVANCE TO NCAA NATIONALS
Eracleo Vallejo successfully defended his Regional title Saturday as Manchester finished third overall at the 2007 NCAA Division III Midwest Regional, hosted by Manchester.
Vallejo won his 125 weight class for the second straight year, while senior Joe Hoover was selected as one of six wildcard picks to advance to the National Tournament. Ben Hoover was selected as an alternate to the NCAA's.
Ben Hoover placed second overall at 174. Spencer Fulk finished third in the heavyweight brackets while Matt Palladino took fourth.
Action resumes on Friday and Saturday, March 2/3 at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa.
2.10.07-MANCHESTER PLACES SIXTH AT MIDSTATES INVITE
Manchester's wrestling team posted a sixth place finish at the Midstates Conference Invite. Coach Tom Jarman didn't dress a full squad for the tournament with the NCAA Regional slated for next weekend, but the Spartans came away with four place winners on the afternoon.
Byron Sweet took first at 149 pounds to lead MC. Sam Carsey wad third at 141, Torryn Heffelfinger took fifth at 157 and Robert Osborne took fifth at 197 pounds.
Wabash College won the event with former Spartan wrestler Brian Anderson '99 picking up Coach of the Year honors. His assistant, Nathan Hills '00 received Assistant Coach of the Year.
The Spartans play host to the 2007 NCAA Midwest Regional this coming Saturday, with wrestling action starting at 9 a.m.
2.8.07-SPARTANS GO 2-0 AT CONFERENCE DUALS MEET TO WIN CONFERENCE TITLE
Manchester finished the 2007 HCAC Conference duals meet with a 2-0 record, defeating Rose-Hulman 51-3 and Mount St. Joseph 24-23. Manchester earns three more points towards the HCAC All-Sports standings following the meet and captures its 12th conference championship..
Manchester defeated Rose-Hulman 51-3, with four wins coming by forfeit. Rose-Hulman fell to host Mount St. Joseph 55-0, and Manchester posted a 24-23 win over Mount St. Joseph to finish 2-0.
Spencer Fulk snapped a 23-18 deficit for Manchester heading into the heavyweight match by pinning his opponent to earn the full six points and giving Manchester the one-point win. Others winning matches for MC were John Sheets at 133, Matt Palladino at 141, and Joe Hoover, who had two wins on the evening.
Manchester improves to 8-4 in dual meet action this season and will take part in the Midstates Conference Invite on Saturday, which will be hosted by Tri-State.
2.3.07-SPARTANS FINISH 3-1 AT MONON BELL DUALS
Manchester's wrestling team finished 3-1 at the 26th Annual Monon Bell Duals meet hosted by Wabash College.
Manchester opened the tournament with a 20-11 win over the All-Stars. Winners for Manchester were Josh Barlow at 133, Byron Sweet at 149, Nate Hodges at 1165, Been Hoover at 174 and Robert Osborne at 197.
MC then defeated Lincoln College 31-16. Winners were Matt Palladino at 141, Sweet, Joe Hoover at 165, Ben Hoover, Hodges, Osborne and Spencer Fulk at heavyweight.
Manchester fell to Olivet 30-18 as Sweet, J. Hoover, B. Hoover and Fulk all posted wins for MC. The Spartans closed out the tournament with a 34-12 win over Knox. Winners were Barlow, Palladino, Chris Becker at 157, J. Hoover, B. Hoover, Hodges and Osborne.
Ben Hoover finished the tournament with a 4-0 record. Nate Hodges, Robert Osborne and Joe Hoover all had three wins each for Manchester.
The Spartans improve to 6-4 in dual meet action this year. They travel to Mount St. Joseph on Thursday for dual meet action.
1.27.07-WRESTLERS TAKE NINTH AT WHEATON INVITE
The Spartan wrestling team placed ninth out of 29 teams at the Pete Willson Wheaton College Invitational over the weekend.
Sophomore Eracleo Vallejo placed second at 125 pounds to lead MC. Ben Hoover took third place at 165 pounds while his brother Ben Hoover took fourth place at 174.
Manchester returns to action next Saturday at the Wabash College Monon Bell Duals Tournament.
1.20.07-MANCHESTER PLACES 3RD AT SPARTAN MAT CLASSIC
Manchester's wrestling team placed third out of 13 schools at the 13th Annual Spartan Mat Classic, hosted by Manchester. Olivet won the team title with 142.5 points, followed by 131.5 points by Wabash in second, and 117.5 points by MC.
Manchester had seven place winners, including two champions on the day. Eracleo Vallejo won at 125 pounds and was named the meet's Most Outstanding Wrestler, while Ben Hoover captured first place at 174 pounds. He shared the award for Most Falls/Least Time Award with Zach Mizer of Heidelberg from the 149 pound weight class.
Other place winners for Manchester include a second place finish from John Sheets at 133 and Matt Palladino at 141, third place from Spencer Fulk. Byron Sweet placed seventh at 149 and Nate Hodges took eighth at 165.
Manchester travels to the Wheaton Classic this coming weekend.
1.6.07-VALLEJO PLACES THIRD AT MIDWEST CLASSIC
Manchester College's wrestling team returned to action after a 21-day break to place 15th overall at the Midwest Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis. Manchester was the top-place finishing Division III school out of the 24 schools participating.
Manchester sophomore Eracleo Vallejo placed third for Manchester at 125 pounds, advancing to the semi-finals on Friday, and falling in his first match of the day Saturday. He ended the tournament with a 5-1 record, and was the top place winner for any Division III competitor.
Manchester returns to action on Saturday, January 20, as MC hosts the 13th annual Spartan Mat Classic.
12.16.06-MANCHESTER EDGES ONU IN DUAL MEET ACTION
Manchester College's wrestling team posted a 20-18 win over Ohio Northern University in dual meet action from Saturday. Manchester held a 20-15 lead heading into the last match of the afternoon, and despite a loss by heavyweight Spencer Fulk, ONU couldn't capitalize with a pin, as Adam Kosch won 7-5 over Fulk.
Winners for Manchester were Eracleo Vallejo at 125 pounds. He pinned Josh Hinojosa in 44 seconds. Matt Palladino was a 5-0 winner over Ben Waldman at 141 pounds. Brothers Joe Hoover was a 16-3 major decision winner at 165, while Ben posted an 8-0 major decision at 174. Robert Osborne won 11-6 over ONU's Stuart Fisher at 197.
Sam Carsey at 141 and Ethan Newham at heavyweight picked up wins in JV action.

The Manchester College wrestling team placed 10th out of 21 teams at the Ohio Northern Invitational. The Spartans took home three place winners, including Eracleo Vallejo's third place finish at 125 pounds, Ben Hoover's fourth place finish at 174 and Joe Hoover's fifth place finish at 165.
Manchester returns to Ohio Northern this Saturday for a dual meet starting at noon.
12.2.06-HOOVERS WIN AT LITTLE STATE
Two Spartans captured individual titles while three others placed as Manchester College played host for the 47th Annual Little State Wrestling Tournament. Joe Hoover won by pin at 165 pounds and brother Ben Hoover won on a 9-5 decision at 174 to win individual titles for Manchester College. Eracleo Vallejo placed second at 125 pounds along with Matt Palladino at 141 pounds. Byron Sweet took seventh place at 157 pounds for Manchester's top place winners.
The University of Indianapolis was the big winner in the two-day tournament, staking claim in five individual titles. Winners for the Greyhounds were John Fleming at 125, Shane Perkey at 133, Charlie Pingleton at 149, Mike Horton at 157 and Jose Navarro at 285. Wabash College had the remaining three wrestlers that won their weight class, including Garrett Pino at 141, Will clarke at 184 and Keith Garrard at 197.
Shane Perkey of U. of Indianapolis was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament, and Nick Kraus of Tri-State received the Most Pins Award.
11.18.06-TWO PLACE AT CONCORDIA
Manchester College's 125 pounder Eracleo Vallejo placed third for Manchester at the 2006 Concordia Invite held in Wisconsin on Saturday. Matt Paladino picked up a second place finish at the tournament in his first collegiate meet at 141 pounds.
The Spartans return to action December 1 and 2 as they host the 2006 Little State Wrestling Meet.
11.11.06-HOOVER GOES 5-0, SPARTANS END UP 2-3 AT LAKELAND DUALS
The Manchester College wrestling team finished 2-3 overall at the Lakeland Duals on Saturday. Manchester opened with a 47-4 loss to Coe College, but rallied to take a 48-0 win over Lincoln Christian. Manchester fell to host Lakeland 37-10, then went on to defeat Concordia 30-7. They fell to Milwaukee School of Engineering 27-17 to end the day.
Senior Joe Hoover was the only Spartan to go undefeated on the day as the 165-pounder finished the meet with a 5-0 record.
Manchester returns to action next Saturday at the Concordia Invite.
