Institutional Review Board (IRB)


The Institutional Review Board is charged with the following:

  1. To review and approve all research involving humans conducted by faculty, staff, or students acting as representatives of Manchester University.
  2. To inform the Academic Policies Committee of changes in institutional policy regarding the “Ethics Guidelines for Research Involving Humans and/or Vertebrate Animal Subjects.”
  3. To foster the research process at Manchester University.


Please follow the steps below to determine if your study meets the requirements for an expedited or formal review. (Most studies at MU fall under expedited research.)

  1. Check the criteria listed in the Application for Expedited Research Review to determine if your project qualifies for expedited review.  If your project qualifies, please complete the following steps:
    1. Complete information in required boxes.
    2. Attach required description of research.
    3. Attached required informed consent. (See sample.)
    4. Include any surveys or other needed documentation.

Office of Human Subjects Research

The OHSR, part of the National Institute of Health, issues regulations for the protection of human subjects of research and provides instruction and guidance in ethical issues associated with such research. OHSR information sheets include guidelines for writing research protocols and for writing informed consent documents.

Tutorial on Protecting Human Research Participants

This free tutorial is offered by the National Institute of Health’s Office of Extramural Research. Although it is recommended by the IRB, completion is not required for approval. If the research project is funded by a state or federal agency, this human subjects training is required.

Expedited applications from the Pharmacy Program are reviewed year-round. All other application are reviewed from the first day of class until the last day of class before finals during the fall and spring semesters.
