Professor James R.C. Adams

Congress honored Professor Jim Adams as the No. 1 professor among all baccalaureate colleges and universities in the nation in November 2002. Students and colleagues hailed Adams for his more than 50 years of teaching, praising him as mentor, artist, archaeologist, world traveler, filmmaker, author, photographer, linguist and more.

Given by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Adams' selection as U.S. Professor of the Year topped a list of more than 400 nominees.

At the ceremony, former student and 1997 graduate Jenna Oke wrote of Adams' style. “He taught me much, not just about academics, but also about music and literature from other cultures. Always eager to share stories and discoveries resulting from his insatiable and unabashed curiosity about life, Mr. Adams inspired me to learn - about myself, about others, about the world around me." Oke now is an assistant professor of art at Manchester.

As part of his art classes, Adams' students gained hands-on experience restoring a historical mural and ceiling in a nearby community and saved thousands of dollars in consultation fees and restoration projects. Adams currently chairs the art department and also has taught in the English, Spanish, and music departments at Manchester.

Adams helped establish study abroad programs in Ecuador and Mexico, and he has exhibited art works in England, Mexico, Spain, and throughout the United States.
