Korrine Gust's passion for teaching, her love for children, and her advocacy for children's rights bring credibility to the classes she teaches in early childhood development and special education. Her motivational style mirrors the goals she has for her students. Have fun learning. Celebrate what is learned, then make an impact by sharing it with others. Future teachers in Gust's classroom are often up and moving about, interacting with others in related hands-on activities and incorporating musical tunes, rhythms, mime, and developmental toys or art mediums into effective lesson plans. If Gust is known for one thing, it is that she relates well to all learners, focusing on techniques that bring out the best in everyone. No wonder Gust was selected as Outstanding Sponsor of ISEA (Indiana Student Education Association) in 2003, the statewide organization for which a Manchester College student has been named president in four of the last five years. Gust has written for the NEA (National Education Association) magazine and has been a positive influencer in community and state organizations as well, speaking on topics of mild disabilities, autism, and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and serving as part of a creative collaboration to help develop a multicultural anti-bias curriculum for child care providers. Jill Gallmeyer, treasurer of the Student Education Association on campus, said of Gust, “She's exceptional! She not only knows the legal terminology, she's had the practical experience of teaching all ages, from pre-school to the college level. She relays personal stories and explains technical terms in ways that we are able to apply them to our own situations.” Korrine M. Gust (1999), instructor of education
Co-sponsor of the Manchester Chapter of ISEA Gust was recently honored as an outstanding graduate student from Ball State University where she is currently working on her ED.D. degree.
