“Big Brother” controls Manchester College

stage for Oct. 8-10 production of 1984

The original “Big Brother” takes control of the Manchester College stage with the fall production of Michael Gene Sullivan’s adaption of the novel 1984. The Midwest premier of the unpublished play 1984 is based on George Orwell’s classic story of a society encompassed by constant war, government surveillance and mind control.

“The audience doesn’t need to read the book to understand the play,” says director Jane Frazier of the Oct. 8-10 production in Wampler Auditorium on the North Manchester campus.

When Director Jane Frazier learned about the unpublished script for 1984, she connected with the California-based playwright, who sent her a copy. “He was thrilled a show would be produced in the Midwest,” she said. The play opened in 2006 at The Actors’ Gang Theatre in Los Angeles.

Sullivan drew his inspiration for the adaptation from the events of September 11 and the Patriot Act. “We were being told to spy on each other, to distrust each other, to be our own police state … and I thought it sounded like 1984,” he told the Manchester College theatre lecturer.

The curtain rises at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8-9, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 10. Tickets are $7 for adults; $5 for senior citizens and non-MC students. Reservations are not necessary.
