wind musicians Nov. 30

Manchester College will present “Heritage of the Wind Band” by its Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble on Thursday, Nov. 30. The free concert in Cordier Auditorium begins at 7:30 p.m. Reservations are not necessary.

The 30-member Symphonic Band has selected music ranging from choral preludes to a Shaker melody to Scarborough Fair. The concert includes Ride, which composer Samuel Hazo says was inspired by a ride in the Indiana countryside. Other composers on the program conducted by Dr. Suzanne Gindin include Aaron Copland, Robert Sheldon, David Maslanka, William Latham and Calvin Custer.

The 10-member Jazz Ensemble, directed by Larry Docker, brings a 2006 arrangement of  Cole Porter’s 1939 classic I Concentrate on You to the Manchester stage, as well as music from nine other composers. The program features music by Paul Williams and Kenneth L. Ascher, Howard Rowe, Les Hooper, Carolyn Leigh and Cy Coleman, Lennie Niehaus, Neal Hefti, Bob Seibert and to the Manchester stage.
