Vagina Monologues returns Feb. 26

to talk about violence against women

Eve Ensler’s award-winning play, The Vagina Monologues, returns to the Manchester College stage on Saturday, Feb. 26 in a benefit for an area shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Female students, faculty and staff members of the College community will present 19 monologues about the female organ. While humor surrounds many of the monologues, seriousness is ever-present, as the actors remind the audience of rape, mutilation and other acts of violence against women.

The two-act play begins at 8 p.m. in Wampler Auditorium. Tickets are $5 matt he door, with 100 percent going to charity – mostly to the Hands of Hope women’s shelter in Wabash, Ind. A portion also will go to women in Iraq. Last year, the MC performance raised $658.

Manchester College presents The Vagina Monologues in conjunction with V-Day, a global movement to stop violence against women and girls.

“By performing The Vagina Monologues as part of the International V-Day campaign, we are hoping to raise awareness of violence against women – a problem that is a reality for many people here in our own community as well as around the globe,” said Heidi Gross, peace studies intern and coordinator of the Manchester College production of the play.

“We know that the money we raise for Hands of Hope will be put to good use in our community,” Gross said.  “We are also performing The Vagina Monologues simply because it is a good show – educational, inspiring, and moving for the performers as well as the audience.”

A "talk back" session with the audience will follow the performance.

Hands of Hope is organized through Family Services of Wabash County to serve victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse with counseling and shelter. To contact Hands of Hope, call 260-553-4407. For more information about V-Day activities, visit the website at www.vday.org
