coach Dave Harms
NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. (Nov. 17, 2003) - Manchester
College head football coach Dave Harms has resigned, effective at the
end of his contract, Dec. 31. "It is time for a change," said Harms,
who has 23 years of coaching experience. "It's time to move on in my
football career." He tendered his resignation today.
Manchester Director of Athletics Thomas S. Jarman
praised Harms as a coach who places the well-being of his student
athletes above all other considerations. "He has directed our football
program with complete integrity and great competitiveness. He has
affected not only his student athletes but the lives of his fellow
coaches, the faculty and staff of Manchester College and the greater
community with inspirational teaching, coaching and leadership."
Jarman noted that Harms has been the consummate
team player while at Manchester, "willing to share his resources with
other coaches and programs in a time when that kind of generosity is a
rarity. He has supported many programs at the college and the community
with great enthusiasm."
Harms comes off a 2-8 season with the Spartans, and
a 27-63 record with the NCAA Division III team in the Heartland
Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC).
Manchester President Parker G. Marden said the
college has accepted Harms' resignation "with true regret. Dave Harms is
one of the best human beings I know. He offered his resignation because
he places other interests over his own, and I respect that greatly."
Jarman will begin immediately to seek a
replacement, mindful of the need to continue the student-athlete
recruiting process and to maintain team confidence in the off-season.
Manchester is losing only seven players to graduation next spring; about
fifty players will return to the squad, Jarman said.
Prior to joining the Spartan leadership in 1995,
Harms coached at Valparaiso University, Upper Iowa University and
Northeast Missouri State. A 1980 graduate of Drake University, his first
job was coaching Mingo High School in Iowa.
