Manchester College showcases

 musical talent for the holidays

Manchester College toasts the season with music this December. From jazz to carols to the full Manchester Symphony Orchestra in concert with pianist Simon Mulligan – there’s something for everyone.

First to the stage are the Chamber Singers and Cantabile women’s chorus, for their popular Lessons & Carols service Friday, Dec. 2 at Zion Lutheran Church in North Manchester. The musical gift to the community begins at 7 p.m., with a free program ranging from Renaissance songs to modern works. Conductors are Debra Lynn and Andrew Suhre, with Robin Gratz on the organ.

At 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, the MSO welcomes pianist Simon Mulligan to campus for The Holidays, a concert featuring Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor. Conductor is Scott Humphries, assistant professor of music. The free concert is in Cordier Auditorium on the Manchester College campus; reservations are not necessary. Seasonal Fanfare!, the final performance before holiday break, presents “big band” tradition in an ensemble of the College Symphonic Band with the Jazz Ensemble on Friday, Dec. 9 in Cordier Auditorium. Conductors are Tim Reed and Scott Humphries. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.; a silent auction to benefit the band and ensemble runs 6:45 to 7:25 p.m.

“The ensemble program will focus on classics from the swing era as well as more modern tunes by Sonny Rollins and Thelonious Monk,” promises Tim Reed, jazz band director and assistant professor of music. Tickets are $5; reservations are not necessary.
