North Manchester all-community

food drive is Nov. 14-20

Canned veggies and fruit, cereal, peanut butter, spaghetti and other pastas, soap and detergents – practically all non-perishable or household items – are desperately needed as members of our community struggle to feed their families.

North Manchester residents can help their less-fortunate neighbors during the 2010 Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week collaboration between Manchester College and community organizations and friends.

Expectations are high for the Nov. 14-20 food drive. Last year, the door-to-door collection for the Manchester Food Pantry brought more than 1,700 pounds of much-needed food and household supplies to the pantry, said Jessie Hickerson, student director for the MC Office of Volunteer Services.

There is a major change to this year’s food drive, with no door-to-door pick-up. Instead, community residents may drop items off at three locations: North Manchester Public Library, Learn More Center and Lance’s New Market.

“This is one of our major volunteer services events of the year,” said Hickerson, a senior English major. “We do our best to ensure everyone participates in some capacity. By doing so, it shows the compassionate spirit of the Manchester community.”

For more about this annual food drive, contact the Manchester College Office of Volunteer Services at ovs@manchester.edu or 260-982-5084.

The food drive is a coordinated effort of the College Office of Volunteer Services, Circle K, Manchester High School Key Club and individual volunteers. To donate items directly, the Manchester Food Pantry is open 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays at 500 N. Front St., sponsored by the Fellowship of Churches.
