Manchester College students seek

to "Rock the Vote" with Sept. 29

registration, absentee ballot event

Not registered to vote? There’s no excuse, according to three Manchester College organizations on a mission to ensure every eligible student is registered to vote in the Nov. 2 midterm elections. Their campaign platform is called Rock the Vote, and it’s rolling across the nation’s campuses.

Students and community residents are invited to join the party to register to vote or fill out an absentee ballot request, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29 on the College mall. Music, food and raffles for prizes are promised. (Oct. 4 is the last day Indiana residents can register to vote in the Nov. 2 elections.)

Students at Manchester want to spread the word that they can determine the future, even during midterm elections. "The electoral process is one of the simplest, most-important rights we have as citizens,” said sophomore Nicolas Barbknecht, chair of the Manchester chapter of College Republicans. “By engaging and registering young people to vote, we are ensuring future generations are not the silent majority,” said the sophomore accounting major from Michigan City, Ind.

Rock the Vote – which is non-partisan, with no partisan campaigning or recruiting permitted during the event – is a fun way to register, said Kyle Grubbs of Muncie, Ind., vice president of membership and finance for Indiana Youth Democrats.

At the event, eligible voters can register online or organizers will forward the completed registrations and absentee ballot request forms to respective counties. Out-of-state voters also will receive assistance, said Grubbs.

“We had a huge success with Rock the Vote in the 2008 presidential elections,” said senior Jason Ray, president of the campus Political Science Club and a political science major from Liberty, Ind. “It was selected as the Program of the Year at Manchester College.”

Rock the Vote is organized by the campus Political Science Club, College Republicans, Young Democrats and residential life staff and students. For more about the event, contact William Kallas, president of Student Government Association, wakallas@spartans.manchester.edu.
