One periodical entitled, "Mennonite Family History," Volume XII, Number 1, January 1993.  This publication was probably kept by Archivist, Ferne Baldwin.  A special note is made about the article, "The Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, Cassel Family," by Mary Cassel Case. This article traces the ancestors of Benjamin and Maria Cassel, who were married in Montgomery County, Ohio, 1861, who both had the surname "Cassel."

Social Science Festival Speaker 

Marty Smeltzer West is the third and final speaker for the convocation Social Science series.   Marty was a student at Manchester from 1963 - 1965. She talks about, "One Woman's Journey into the Legal Profession," and "Confrontation with Choice." One reel-to-reel tape and two CD's, each recording portions of Ms. West's presentation. We as women are faced with too many choices, too many different roles we are asked to play and that we want to play.  The solution is to confront choices and make new societal structures as we go through changes in roles and life patterns that are inevitable for all of us.

Professor Colburn (Psychology), introduces Ms. West.

 
Convocation: Harris, Sydney, "On the Topic of Communication"MC2011/25 Author and newspaper columnist, Sydney Harris talks about "Communication" during convocation.  He previously spoke here in 1965.  He started as a  reporter for the Chicago Herald and Examiner. In 1941, Mr. Harris began work at the Chicago Daily News,  In 1944, he began his personal column.  Author of, "For the Time Being," and The Authentic Person."  The talk was given prior to December 1986. 
Cordier, Dorothy: Memorial Service 1972, audio on CD-RMC2011/5 Dorothy Cordier is the wife of Andrew Cordier.  Both individual sare Manchester College alumna.  The original recording of her memorial service was recorded on AMPEX tape.  This tape was digitized by Stan Pittman's department in 2010.

Finnell, Loren: AutobiographyMC2011/200 

Recipient of the Sargent Shriver Award by the National Peace Corps Association, and an honorary doctorate from Manchester College, Loren Finnell is a member of the Manchester College Class of 1964.

He composed a draft of a autobiography entitled, "Still a County Boy.....After having been around the world a couple of times, The memoirs of Loren Finnell." In this manuscript Loren relates his experience at Manchester College, including a clandestine trip to Washington, D.C. for a "Ban the Bomb" demonstration.

This photograph of a graduation event is not titled or dated so one can not be sure if it related to Manchester College or not.  It was found with photographs of Manchester College, Mount Morris College and pictures related to the Church of the Brethren.  The image was made by "Rickert Studio, Huntington, Indiana," a town close to Manchester College, so therefore could be Manchester College or a related institution.  Evidence pointing away from Manchester College comes from the lack of individuals dressed in Brethren garb. There might be one man in a Brethren collar at the back table towards the viewer's left. Manchester College Faculty and Staff are not identifable.

Manchester College: Historical Movies MC2009/147a,b,c 

This collection of historical movies comes from the latter years of Otho Winger's presidency and the early years of Schwalm's. The Archivist believes a clip is from Schwalm's inauguration in the fall of 1941.

Several graduations are documented, one in which Winger hold a lighted candle and lights a candle for each robed student. 

Moving pictures of May Days, for at least two years....complete with gymnasts, male tumblers in short-shorts, a funny costumed bull (two people) and bull fighter, dances around the Maypole, the May Day Queen and entourage, and parade.

Camp Mack day showing student and professors arriving/departing by train and playing games and eating at Camp Mack.

Homecoming, including "Blitzkreig on Valpo."

Probably a promotional segment where a veiled young woman visits Manchester College with her mother, father and brother.  Their car pulls up next to the tennis courts and they exit the car and walk slowly to the Administration building.

However, the recording, CD #1, Part 1, starts out with Dr. Knechel addressing students, then Moments with Manchester with James Garber, recording the New Year's and Christmas radio program. Part 2, CD #2, is actually Dr. Nathan Wright, African-American leader, educator and activist.  He gives a presentation centering around the topic, "What Black Educators Are Saying."

Roanoke Classical SeminaryMC2004/693-2 

Roanoke Classical Seminary in Roanoke, Indiana was founded by Professor F. S. Reefy in 1860.  Many of its students later became prominent individuals.  Roanoke was described as the "Athens of Northern Indiana. The school was moved in 1889 and became known as Manchester College.

William Stafford was an English professor at Manchester College from 1955-1956.  He was a conscientious objector during WWII, Poet Laureate of Oregon, and a Pulitzer nominee.

Studebaker, Ted: ABC News Story and Church of the Brethren DocumentaryMU2012/63 

Ted Studebaker, MC Class of 1967, pacifist and conscientious objector - served as an agricultural worker during the Vietnam War.  He was  executed by North Vietnamese in 1971.  This is a recording of the ABC News storoy by Jim Kincaid and an excerpt from the Church of the Brethren documentary on Ted Studebaker.

Student Housing: Alternative Housing, Morris, Leo and Ginny, Chicken CoopMC2007/22 Alternative student housing.  Chicken coop.

 

In 1946 there were many returning students that were veterans or who had been  in Civilian Public Service. Student housing was at a premium.  Some married couples were lucky to get rooms in trailers parked near campus.  Leo and Ginny Morris found an alternative solution, a brand new chicken coop placed in Professor Paul Halladay's back yard!

Two Females Talking About Art Utilized in Home DecoratingMC2011/49 Two women with delightful voices speak about the "museum look" for the home, that includes art everywhere, even in the bath.  There is a plethora of art for purchase, from newly sprouting galleries to department stores. "Sears Roebuck and Co." feels as if there is a big need for art in areas where galleries are few. The tape was labeled "two women gibberish," however some might find the subject of their "gibberish" interesting.  The rest of the tape faintly records stock prices.

United Sexualities:  A group focusing on providing support to members of the GLBT community working to educate and promote dialogue amidst the Manchester community concerning issues of sexual minorities (for example, provides "safe zone" training).

Friends for Sexual Awareness:  A student-initiated group working to educate people about the different risks involved in unhealthy sexual lifestyles and the options surrounding safe sex.  It provides confidential information and support to people who are struggling with sex-related concerns.

World War Two - Record CollectionMC2011/132 

A series of recordings done for Homecoming 1943.  They might have been pre-recorded for broadcast by WOWO Ft. Wayne.  They show the effects that WWII had on Manchester College.

  • War has taken 3/4th of our boys.
  • Intercollegiate football and basketball are part of war casualities.
  • College feels deeply the tragic effects of war.
  • 165 freshmen enrolled.
  • Enrollment of 270 women and 90 men. This unbalance among men and women makes life interesting (that is, for the men).
