| Lassa Fever: President Jo Young Switzer, Parkview North, Honorees | MC2011/191 | This file contains a copy of August 2011 Notes from the President in which a mural at Parkview North emergency room is described. President Jo was asked to paint a square of the mural that depicts an "Everyday Star" whose non-work life embraces generosity and service. She chose John Hamer (MC Class of 1948) who worked with his wife, Esther (MC Class of 1950) as medical missionaries in Nigeria. Besides being a physician, Dr. Hamer was a scientiest who helped to discover one of the world's deadliest viruses -- Lassa Fever. Two other Manchester College graduates were honored as being "Everyday Stars" in the mural, Dr. Jane Weaver (Everyday Star #156) and Daryl Yost (Everyday Star #108). A color copy of the mural is included along with a list of artists and honorees A thank you letter from John and Esther Hamer to President Jo Switzer is also in the file. |

Peters and prior to that of C. Ernest Davies. His dates at Mount Morris spanned from 1924-1932. | Pearson, Winnie | Alumni Box 187: Wertenberger, Winnie Pearson | Winnie Pearson Wertenberger took commencial coursework as well as shorthand and typing, graduating from this program in 1901. She continued to live in North Manchester and worked for an insurance office (The College Standard, June 1901, Vol. III, No. 1) and it is noted in the Manchester College Catlogue 1907, with announcements for 1907-1908 that she worked as a bookkeeper (company not noted, perhaps the same one as previously mentioned.). Her file contains copies from The College Standard and the Manchester College Catalogues that talk about the commercial department at the college and reasons why young women might consider a commercial education. The year prior to September 1994, students had organized a volunteer pep Band that played at football and basketball games. The Pep Band was continued in 1994. Butterbaugh agreed to raise money to furnish the Band with sport shirts and jackets. This letter requests that recipients contribute $100 each to defray the cost of shirts and jackets.

| Photograph and Memorabilia Assortment | MC2011/192 | A packet of materials was dropped at the Front Desk of the Library by an unidentified individual during the month of July 2011. The contents contained photographs from Manchester College and one paper fan from a local funeral home. The Archivist believes this assortment was received from former Archivist, Ferne Baldwin. Two of the photographs were of the "Flying Club?" and were accessioned as MC2011/190. A listing of the remaining objects follows: 1. One fan from George N. Bender & Son Funderal Directors, North Manchester, Indiana. The picture on the fan is that of a young mother holding a sleeping baby in her arms and is titled, "Loves Gift Divine." This fan will be filed in the Local History Box of the Archives by its accession number MC2011/192fan. 2. Eight Photographs: Two photographs of the gymnasium layout for a program held in June 1967. At first glance, until looking at the date, it appears as if this could be for baccalaureate and commencement exercises. One photograph of Student Alumni Service Award recipients, Cynthia Bull (MC Class of 1990) and Matthew Smucker (MC Class of 1990) as well as Alumni Service Award reciptients Robin Lahman, Florence Freed (MC Class of 1928) and Helen Taylor (MC Class of 1973). Two color snapshots of the footfield field with chairs, platform and band. This is possibly for graduation exercises. | Studebaker, George and Mary: Diaries and Autograph Books | MC2011/90a,b,c,d | Two autograph books, MC2011/90a beloning to Mary (Mollie) and Andrew Studebaker. It is the Archivist's theory that they were brother and sister and shared these books because autographs are written out to both Andrew Simonton and to Mollie and to Mary (the same individual). This book begins 1880 or 1881. The second autograph book, MC2011/90b appears to belong to Mary Simonton (Mollie) and George Studebaker, her future husband has an inscription in the book on May 21, 1881. In 1946 there were many returning students that were veterans or who had been in Civilian Public Service. Student housing was at a premium. Some married couples were lucky to get rooms in trailers parked near campus. The first folder has photocopies of various Summer School catalogue covers and copies of the description of several summer school courses, such as "Remedial Reading Techniques for Teachers," offered in the Summer School of 1952. There is even a copy of the June 6, 1989 advertisement, "North Manchester College, Will Hold Its Summer: Normal, in the Public School Building ....." There is also an application for the June 9 to June 29,1971 first summer session and the June 30 to August 11 second summer session including a list of classes and prices. The second folder contains what might be a sample advertisement for summer school or for an alumni event. It is a nostalgic picture rom the past with student witting on the "spoonholder" in front of the Adinistration Building. |
