The Collegium Musicum was a "small vocal ensemble" according to the college catalog, but brought together vocalists and instrumentalists to perform early music.  Dr. John Planer founded and directed the ensemble.

Conscientious Objection: Draft Counselor's Kit

This collection contains all the paper documents and audio tape of interviews with Manchester Graduates and former Manchester students who served in Civilian Public Service in the late 1940s.

Photographs, periodicals, correspondence, audio recordings, video and VHS recordings of Manchester College students who, as conscientious objectors, served in Civilian Public Service projects during WWII.

Photograph Contact Sheet (Scott Mcalpine, photographer) from 1985 - 1989 including classroom and sports scenes and images of faculty and students.  Many individuals have been identified.

Gene Sharp presents, "Gandhi's Challenge to Modern Politics," on 5 March 1984.  Nonviolent ways of solving problems in the world today.

Dr. Gene Sharp speaks on "Focus on Issues for Social Change," delivered on 2 October 1975.  Dr. Sharp has been described as the world's top theorist of nonviolent strategy.

A listing of Convocation tapes.  Some of these recordings have been digitized but this list does not reflect this information .  A search will have to be done for each individual recording to see if the presentation is available on CD or DVD.

A photograph collection of convocation participants and events.  Most individuals in the pictures have been identified.

This file was found by the archivist in the vault of the Archives.  It contains many papers about curriculum revision discussions that took place circa 1945 and 1946.  Materials deal with a myriad of topics including teacher education, a possible program for elementary teachers, veteran's education, the establishment of a program for Industrial Arts teachers, changes in the Home Economics program, a Secretarial Science survey, proposals for revisions in the Psychology program and much more, including a comparison in the number of full and part-time Latin teachers vs. the number of full and part-time instructors teaching Library Science and Industrial Arts.

"Educational Opportunities for Veterans," and "Educational Opportunities for C. P. S. Men."

Recipient of the Sargent Shriver Award by the National Peace Corps Association, and an honorary doctorate from Manchester College, Loren Finnell is a member of the Manchester College Class of 1964.

He composed a draft of a autobiography entitled, "Still a County Boy.....After having been around the world a couple of times, The memoirs of Loren Finnell." In this manuscript Loren relates his experience at Manchester College, including a clandestine trip to Washington, D.C. for a "Ban the Bomb" demonstration.

About 52 plants are recorded in this personal notebook kept by Anna Gockley, thought to be a student at Mt. Morris College, Illinois in 1987.  The book is dated May 9, 1887 and spans spans May 9, 1887  through April 24, 1890.  The preprinted formatted notebook is entitled, “APGAR’S PLANT ANALYSIS: Adapted to Gray’s Botanies," by E. A. and A. C. Apgar. Although preformatted, the individual fills in the blanks.  Ms. Gockley included localities where specimens were found, such as:

Author, Theodore Dreiser, visited North Manchester during the summer of 1915.  His observations of the community were included in his autobiography, "A Hoosier Holiday."  John Knarr writes about Dreiser's family and includes material on the Snap/Snepp/Sheneb/Shenep/Schneb/Schnebb family as well as on the Fruit family.

A second article, "A Trip to Niagara Falls, 1925," was discovered among papers donated to the North Manchester Center for History by Descendants of Ellis and Harold Miller.

Edith Weybright Huber graduated from Manchester College in 1919. This collection includes many identified individuals as well as pictures from Edith Weybright Huber's 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Two postcards with the same image of "Young Men's Hall, North Manchester."  This building was also known as Ikenberry Hall. Each card has a one cent stamp and a postmark of North Manchester, IND, Jul 21, 5 PM, 1911.

The cards were addressed to Mrs. Louis Achzehner of Newport, Kentucky.

One photograph is marked "inauguration" - perhaps of President Robinson?  A. Blair Helman is in the picture.  Some other faculty members are identified.

D. C. Reber, was the manager of Manchester Subscription Agency. Prof. Reber’s service would have been like toady’s EBSCO – a centralized vendor of periodical subscriptions. This handwritten book begins on December 11, 1930 and continues into 1935.  Individuals from North Manchester, and out of state, local high schools, the Manchester College library, the public library etc. have their periodical subscriptions recorded along with price and shipment address. D. C. Reber is the Manager of the agency whose address is 901 N. Wayne St., North Manchester, Indiana.

Myrtis Becker (MC Class of 1954) Justiniano's collection of items saved from Myrtis' years at Manchester College.

The first known radio communication from the Manchester College campus was through an unlicensed amateur [HAM]radio station privately operated by the Singer brothers in 1927.  Their endeavor was entirely different from and unrelated to the first Manchester College radio station [WMIB] built by Dwight Farringer in 1945.  Francis Barr provides objects from the Singer brothers' interest and gives physical information about the construction of WMIB.

 O. W. Neher served as Acting President at Mount Morris College following the presidency of Professor W. W. Peters and prior to that of C. Ernest Davies. His dates at Mount Morris spanned from 1924-1932.   When a fire forced Mount Morris to close its doors and merge with Manchester College, Neher came to Manchester and taught Biology from 1932-1954.

Oscar Warner Neher taught at Mount Morris College from 1924 until it merged with Manchester College in 1932.  He was the only faculty member that transferred to Manchester College, where he taught biology from 1932 until 1954. Following is a list of folders containing lesson plans and papers for Neher's courses.

Apgar.

About 150 plants are recorded in this personal notebook kept by W. Lewis Ikenberry, thought to be a student at Mt. Morris College, Illinois.  The book spans 21 April 1888 through 30 May 1893.  The preprinted formatted notebook is entitled, “APGAR’S PLANT ANALYSIS: Adapted to Gray’s Botanies," by E. A. and A. C. John Aaron Rawlins, Adjustant and Chief of Staff to General Ulysses S. Grant, attended Rock River Seminary.   

Resume, notes on life, personal notebook, class books and notes for teaching, etc. by D. C. Reber.  D.C. Reber taught education and ancient languages at Manchester College from 1917 until 1942.  The collection also includes biographical newspaper articles about his life and interests.

A school record book for Snyder's School and New Enterprise School.  Dated 1888-1893.

Old Ampex reel-to-reel format tapes including the lectures given by professors such as Gary Deavel, Jim Hollis, John Planer, Steven Batzka, Charles Klinger, James R. C. Adams, and others.  The college does not have the equipment necessary to listen to some of these recordings.

In 2009 and 2010 Pittman and his staff were able to digitize some of the recordings that were on particular types of tape.

C.P.S. Unit 101 Registrar's Records along with a brief history and reference material describing the creation of CPS Camp 101 and its sub-camps, of which Manchester College was one. Manchester College's 10-week program was directed locally by Dr. Andrew W. Cordier.  The sixty-seventy CPS'ers were chosen by Brethren Service Committee, and the plan was for them to leave the country and begin relief and rehabilitation work immediately after the program's completion.

A group of photographs representing Parents' Weekend, Hog Roast Weekend 1993 , the All-American Women's Baseball League 1993,  the Ikenberry Serenade 1991, Student Visitation Day, as well as other events.  Many students and individuals in the pictures are identified.

This vast collection is divided between several pages designated as MC2011/227 [plus Folder Numbers]. Raymond Schutz was a professor at Manchester College. He was also farmer, public speaker, pastor, candidate for Congress (Indiana,1932) and a contendor in the 1936 race for Governor. Schutz was an outstanding official in the local, state and International Kiwanis Club and became President, and then Chairman, of the Standard Life Insurance Company of Indiana. One can get a feel for Pre WWII Indiana and Indiana involved in war. Letters to soldiers are included along with names of men from North Manchester who were killed. Prohibition, economic recovery from the Great Depression, and the impact of Hitler 's Germany on Europe, were somemajor issues of Schutz's day. Schutz was a contemporary of Andrew Cordier who participated in some of Schutz's political involvements.

L. W. Shultz: Piney Woods School.

As Director of Camp Alexander Mack in Milford, Indiana, L.W. Shultz sponsored the tours of the Cotton Blossom Singers of The Piney Woods Country Life School, located in Piney Woods, Mississippi.  He also spoke at Piney Woods on several occasions. 

One notebook with class registers and lectures outlines for various classes.  Student grades are included making this a partially restricted file. Circa 1919 - 1920.

Also included is a personal reading list from 1905 and an Adelphian-Lincoln Program from 22 May 1909 upon which a timeline has been written on the verso.

Personal journal/scrap book filled with clippings about her concerts, performances she had seen, notes and interesting memorabilia.  Also included is a detailed family history entitled, "Pedigree."  It begins with Wolford Webber, the 4th King of Holland, born about 1577. 

Max Allen: Photograph and concert poster with Genita Speicher.

Mrs. Genita Speicher was Associate Professor of Music for 29 years, retiring in 1976.  This collection includes but is not limited to her personal journal/scrap book, photographs, clippings, performances, and interesting memorabilia.

A definite assortment of pictures: Photographs of Steve Alford as well as members of the Alumni Baseball team and Alumni Volleyball team at Homecoming.  Photographs of football team and coaches, various professors and female basketball players.  Baseball team photographs and soccer, track and field.

William Stafford (1914-1993), US Poet Laureate 1970, received Relief and Rehabilitation* training in Civilian Public Service Camp 101 at Manchester College 1943, was member of MC English faculty 1955-56, and visited the college many other times. See letter in collection for further information.

Biographical materials and images of Sadie Stutsman Wampler.

Sadie Stutsman Wampler graduated from Manchester College in 1916.  This is the same year that she began entries in "The Hand O Graphs" book, and kept make entries for years following. This book comes with the instructions: Place your hand, palm downwards, on the paper and trace outline.  There are a couple examples given, and then the individual is on her own to gather outlines of the hands of friends, family and celebrities on the following pages.  It is like an autograph book for hands.  The name of the individual is also recorded along with the date.

Yearbooks and publications from other Church of the Brethren colleges. 

A copy of a letter written to Harold Yoder by J. Allen Willmert, College Librarian Emeritus, 9 April 1990 listing the books that Harold Yoder donated to Funderburg Library. 

Harold Yoder wrote a special note to accompany his donation of the 1901 Hymnal.  It stated that the 1901 Hymnal was used at the Camp Creek Church of the Brethren where his wife, Ella Yoder (deceased) worshipped as a girl.

What makes this album interesting in the amount of history it records.  There are articles about Church of the Brethren missionaries, the Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren  in Elgin, Illinois, Church of the Brethren ministers and leaders, as well as personal stories about the compiler and folks this individual knows.  It is a shame that the source remains unknown.

Zigler and Otho Winger primarily related to the mission work of the Church of the Brethren.  Many names are referred to in these letters.  Not all letters are between Winger and Zigler.  There is mention of Winger's illness and operation on his head. The letterheads on these letters change:
