It is not known if this picture was taken at Manchester College or Mt. Morris College, however it was not found wtih the Mt. Morris materials.  Portrait photographs hang on the wall and an archivist might be able to identify these individuals and identify the location.  Each character is in a costume.  It appears as if the following costumes are represented and perhaps the players are the cast of a variety show or vaudeville presentation:

CD #1 Much blank and irregular space before recording begins. The valuable amount of material on this recording is questionable. Sometimes students are clowning around. If listened to closely, this appears to be a recording of a class.  The Archivist did not have time to listen to it all the way through.

CD#2 Continues with a student that is part of a panel of presentors that and is very hard to understand. There is also discussion.

CD#3 A latin individual talks about ethnic studies programs.  This recording is very distinct but is only a partial recording of the entire presentation.  The presenter is also a teacher from a small institution in Chicago.

About 52 plants are recorded in this personal notebook kept by Anna Gockley, thought to be a student at Mt. Morris College, Illinois in 1987.  The book is dated May 9, 1887 and spans spans May 9, 1887  through April 24, 1890.  The preprinted formatted notebook is entitled, “APGAR’S PLANT ANALYSIS: Adapted to Gray’s Botanies," by E. A. and A. C. Apgar. Although preformatted, the individual fills in the blanks.  Ms. Gockley included localities where specimens were found, such as:

Timber near Frenchtown, Iowa,

New Cemetery, Mt. Morris, Illinois,

College Campus, Mt. Morris, Illinois.

This photograph of a graduation event is not titled or dated so one can not be sure if it related to Manchester College or not.  It was found with photographs of Manchester College, Mount Morris College and pictures related to the Church of the Brethren.  The image was made by "Rickert Studio, Huntington, Indiana," a town close to Manchester College, so therefore could be Manchester College or a related institution.  Evidence pointing away from Manchester College comes from the lack of individuals dressed in Brethren garb. There might be one man in a Brethren collar at the back table towards the viewer's left. Manchester College Faculty and Staff are not identifable.

Florence King was the first female patent attorney in the United States.  She graduated from Mount Morris College in 1891.

Elder Robert Henry Miller, minister in the Church of the Brethren had a son, Manchester College Professor Robert Henry Miller, a minister as well.  The accession page gives information about both father and son. Robert E. Mohler graduated from Mount Morris College in 1912 with a B.A. degree.  He served Mount Morris as Physical Director, Education during the 1912-1913 school year.  Robert Mohler died in 1980. This is his postcard collection.

 O. W. Neher served as Acting President at Mount Morris College following the presidency of Professor W. W. Peters and prior to that of C. Ernest Davies. His dates at Mount Morris spanned from 1924-1932.   When a fire forced Mount Morris to close its doors and merge with Manchester College, Neher came to Manchester and taught Biology from 1932-1954.

Oscar Warner Neher taught at Mount Morris College from 1924 until it merged with Manchester College in 1932.  He was the only faculty member that transferred to Manchester College, where he taught biology from 1932 until 1954. Following is a list of folders containing lesson plans and papers for Neher's courses.

Morris College, Illinois.  The book spans 17 April 1889 through 29 July 1897.  The preprinted formatted notebook is entitled, “APGAR’S PLANT ANALYSIS: Adapted to Gray’s Botanies," by E. A. and A. C. Apgar.

About 150 plants are recorded in this personal notebook kept by W. Lewis Ikenberry, thought to be a student at Mt. Morris College, Illinois.  The book spans 21 April 1888 through 30 May 1893.  The preprinted formatted notebook is entitled, “APGAR’S PLANT ANALYSIS: Adapted to Gray’s Botanies," by E. A. and A. C. Apgar. Although preformatted, the individual fills in the blanks.  W. Lewis Ikenberry, from Waterlook Iowa, filled this book out in detail, including localities where specimens were found, such as:

The Holl-Kintner Hall of Science was constructed during the first phase of the March of Progress fundraising campaign was named in honor of  Professors Holl and Kintner.  These portraits were located in the lobby of Holl-Kintner Hall of Science.

John Aaron Rawlins, Adjustant and Chief of Staff to General Ulysses S. Grant, attended Rock River Seminary.   

History of Rock River Seminary, Mt. Morris, Illinois.  This institution was started by the Methodists in the 1839.

Rock River Seminary, Mt. Morris, Illinois, was started by the Methodists in the 1839.  This collection is related to that era.

John G. Royer taught at Mt. Morris College and also served as  President of the College.  These are newspaper articles related to his death.

Information about scholarships (1.) Awarded by Manchester College and (2.) Non-Manchester College related scholarships given to Manchester College students/alumni.

This vast collection is divided between several pages designated as MC2011/227 [plus Folder Numbers]. Raymond Schutz was a professor at Manchester College. He was also farmer, public speaker, pastor, candidate for Congress (Indiana,1932) and a contendor in the 1936 race for Governor. Schutz was an outstanding official in the local, state and International Kiwanis Club and became President, and then Chairman, of the Standard Life Insurance Company of Indiana. One can get a feel for Pre WWII Indiana and Indiana involved in war. Letters to soldiers are included along with names of men from North Manchester who were killed. Prohibition, economic recovery from the Great Depression, and the impact of Hitler 's Germany on Europe, were somemajor issues of Schutz's day. Schutz was a contemporary of Andrew Cordier who participated in some of Schutz's political involvements.

Article, "J. Raymond Schutz," by Wilbur Brookover donated to the Archives by Ferne Baldwin.

Postcard with writing, "Nine Rahs for Shutz."   The picture is identified on the verso as "Former Faculty Sheetz," but it is J. Wine's opinion this was taken during the rally where J. Raymond Schutz ran for Republican Candidate for Congress.  It is located in the Large Faculty/Staff Photo Boxes (166, 167 and 138 combined)

What makes this album interesting in the amount of history it records.  There are articles about Church of the Brethren missionaries, the Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren  in Elgin, Illinois, Church of the Brethren ministers and leaders, as well as personal stories about the compiler and folks this individual knows.  It is a shame that the source remains unknown.

Photograph: Miss Blickenstaff and colleague in Mahableswa, India, in costumes.  It is not known if Miss Blickenstaff is a tourist, a missionary or if she is the Mary Blickenstaff referred to in the Brethren Encyclopedia.  The Brethren Encyclopedia writes of a Lynn (Mt. Morris Academy) and Mary Blickenstaff (La VerneCollege) as traveling to India in 1921 where Lynn Blickenstaff served as mission treasurer.  In 1935 Lynn became the manager of the Intermission Business Office in Bombay.  Mary assisted in administration, taught and hosted missionaries and visitors.  In 1946 the Church World Service asked Lynn to direct relief work in India    Their son, David Blickenstaff, was a 1937 Manchester College graduate.

William I. T. Hoover was born near Dayton, Ohio.  Among other institutions, he studied at Mt. Morris Academy.  He taught history and philosophy at Manchester College from 1901 - 1906.

The Krebiehl Bible is German.  A note from Rob Gratz indicates that the bible might have been printed in Holland circa 1600.  It  also identifies the bible as coming from the Rossville Church of the Brethren, Indiana.  More research is needed regarding the material written on the pages at the end of the book. Family history is traced from 1762, along with what appears to be apocalyptic beliefs in the creation of the numbers 666.  The bible is beautifully illustrated:

An inscription at the beginning of the book has been translated: 

My father, Peter Krebiehl, received this Bible from his father, Samuel Krebiehl.  Upon my request he gave it to me, Jacob Krebiehl, his oldest son, as a gift.  For this I owe him eternal gratitude.  This Bible is therefore very dear and valuable to me.  May God reward him with many blessings.

This Sourvenir Booklet contains a dedicatory program, a commemorative and anniversary service of the Church of the Brethren in Mount Morris, Illinois, that took place on Sunday, 18 March 1923. It holds pictures of members, lists of elders, pastors, ministers, a membership directory as well as historical sketches.

BC2010/51b: Book of writings about Peace, given by Russell R. Lambert, Dayton, Ohio, 1944, the great grandson of Peter Nead.  Written in the book is "This Book is the Property of Peter Nead."

BC2010/51c:  "Peter Nead's Book" written on interior along with another inscription, "Given by Russell R. Lambert, R.I. Dayton, Ohio. On the very back page are the words, "Peter Nead's Book of Universalism."  The book title is, "Notes on the Parables of the New Testament, by  Hosea Ballou, Pastor of the Universalist Church and Society in Portsmouth, N.H.....,"1812."

One program from the Peace Oratorical Contest, 14 June 1930.  The program includes speakers and the the titles of their presentations. It appears as if all of the Church of the Brethren institutions had a representative at the contest, except for LaVerne College.
