A book presented to Manchester College by Hung Nien Cheng, President of Chi-nan University, Shanghai, July, 1930. The book appears to be about the history of China, or an area of China, and contains fabulous architectural illustrations and photographs.

The Christian Heraldand Signs of Our Times, 1889 may have been utilized in the early days of Manchester College when Professor David Howe was President of the institution.

The German song book is lacking a title page. It is composed of two sections. The first section is1044 pages in length, followed by an index. The second section is dated 1781, and is at least 158 pages in long.

This conference featured Mary Travers, social activist and folk music star from the singing group, Peter, Paul and Mary. The keynote speaker was Dr. Ronald Sider, Professor of Theology at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary. This was the 5th year for the conference, an ecumenical gathering sponsored by the college's Peace Studies Institute and the Howard John Peace and Justice Lectureship of the Manchester Church of the Brethren.
Papers written for Professor Kendall Roger's class on Brethren heritage. They range in date from 1990 to 1992. The topics are varied and include but are not limited to: Church of the Brethren history, the legacy of certain individuals, architecture, Brethren beliefs and Church of the Brethren programs.

Conscientious Objectors: Civilian Public Service Interviews
Photographs, periodicals, correspondence, audio recordings, video and VHS recordings of Manchester College students who, as conscientious objectors, served in Civilian Public Service projects during WWII.
At the time of the address on 26 March 1984, Lerone Bennett was the Senior Editor of "Ebony" magazine. He was here because the Eby family ordered him to come to the College that day. This reference is in regard to Kermit Eby Senior, and Kermit Eby, Jr. He knows of the marvelous work that the Church of the Brethren has done in the area of peace and social justice and in trying to make sure that there is a world tomorrow. He will speak on black history and the multicultural educational challenges of the 1980's.
In this 9/29/1980 ceremony, Donald F. Durnbaugh receives the degree, Doctor of Humane Letters. The degree is conferred by President Helman. Dr. Durnbaugh then gives the presentation, "Confessions of a Searcher."

Convocation #84: West, Marty Smeltzer, "One Woman's Journey into the Legal Profession"
Marty Smeltzer West is the third and final speaker for the convocation Social Science series. Marty was a student at Manchester from 1963 - 1965. She talks about, "One Woman's Journey into the Legal Profession," and "Confrontation with Choice." One reel-to-reel tape and two CD's, each recording portions of Ms. West's presentation. We as women are faced with too many choices, too many different roles we are asked to play and that we want to play. The solution is to confront choices and make new societal structures as we go through changes in roles and life patterns that are inevitable for all of us.

It is not known if this picture was taken at Manchester College or Mt. Morris College, however it was not found wtih the Mt. Morris materials. Portrait photographs hang on the wall and an archivist might be able to identify these individuals and identify the location. Each character is in a costume. It appears as if the following costumes are represented and perhaps the players are the cast of a variety show or vaudeville presentation:

Adam Ebey Collection: Collection of grade reports, Sunday School certificates, and other material documenting Adam Ebey's time at Mount Morris and Manchester Colleges.
These appear to be small hand-etched panes of glass. It seems as if each participant wrote his/her name individually, perhaps as part of a College function, reunion, or Church of the Brethren event?
Collection includes information about eight female Manchester College students who lived at 703 College Avenue beginning in 1946. The women are: Neva Miller '50 Mason, Mary Nihart '50x Wetzel, Nola McCauley '50 Plaugher, Maxine Hileman '50 Garber, Mary Nichols '49 Ettinger, Ella Gottshalk '50 Byrer (deceased), Lenora Mishler '50 Stark, and Kay Moran '59 Farrar.

Financial Records of Manchester College: Tuition and Student Receipts
Ledgers and receipts of tuition, typewriter and piano fees, lab fees, room and board fees to students from 1893 through at least 1942. This information is part of a much larger collection MC2007/137.
Recipient of the Sargent Shriver Award by the National Peace Corps Association, and an honorary doctorate from Manchester College, Loren Finnell is a member of the Manchester College Class of 1964.
He composed a draft of a autobiography entitled, "Still a County Boy.....After having been around the world a couple of times, The memoirs of Loren Finnell." In this manuscript Loren relates his experience at Manchester College, including a clandestine trip to Washington, D.C. for a "Ban the Bomb" demonstration.

The Gish Fund was an endowment to provide books cheaply to ministers and missionaries. This is a chronological list of all Gish Fund Books from 1899 - 1944.
A Blair Helman Papers: In1964, representatives from Goshen College and Manchester College met to explore the possibilities of cooperative projects in BCA and in the science division.
This photograph of a graduation event is not titled or dated so one can not be sure if it related to Manchester College or not. It was found with photographs of Manchester College, Mount Morris College and pictures related to the Church of the Brethren. The image was made by "Rickert Studio, Huntington, Indiana," a town close to Manchester College, so therefore could be Manchester College or a related institution. Evidence pointing away from Manchester College comes from the lack of individuals dressed in Brethren garb. There might be one man in a Brethren collar at the back table towards the viewer's left. Manchester College Faculty and Staff are not identifable.
Moy Gwong was the first international student to receive a degree from Manchester College in 1920. He went on to be an outstanding Church of the Brethren missionary in China.

On 13 May 1969, a mass marriage ceremony and tent-in took place on the Manchester College campus. The purpose was to initiate a "change in attitude...tak[ing] the form of students assuming freedom and responsibility in determining the direction of their lives."

"The Immortal J. N.," Jacob Newman Free, was a frequent visitor of Warsaw, Indiana and Kosciusko County. He had long, flowing gray hair and would gather a crowd on a street corner and make an address on various topics. He never lingered long in one place. This folder contains his history, image, and several stories.

Material regarding L. D. Ikenberry [Levi Daniel] who between 1900 and 1943,taught mathematics, science, astronomy, pedagogy, geology, and served as treasurer, vice president, and acting president of Manchester College. Ikenberry Hall was named in his honor. He died on December 29, 1957.

A travelogue probably written by Dorothy Jones, Administrative Assistant to M. R. Zigler, Director ot the European Program of the Berthren Service Commission. This trip was taken by 5 women and Dorothy describes their excursion through various European cities and countries directly following WWII. This is an interesting documentary of culture, food, place and custom.

This file contains a copy of August 2011 Notes from the President in which a mural at Parkview North emergency room is described. President Jo was asked to paint a square of the mural that depicts an "Everyday Star" whose non-work life embraces generosity and service. She chose John Hamer (MC Class of 1948) who worked with his wife, Esther (MC Class of 1950) as medical missionaries in Nigeria. Besides being a physician, Dr. Hamer was a scientiest who helped to discover one of the world's deadliest viruses -- Lassa Fever.
Two other Manchester College graduates were honored as being "Everyday Stars" in the mural, Dr. Jane Weaver (Everyday Star #156) and Daryl Yost (Everyday Star #108).

Elder Robert Henry Miller, minister in the Church of the Brethren had a son, Manchester College Professor Robert Henry Miller, a minister as well. Richard Edwards and John Harvey Parr, who were teachers of Jane Addams in Cedarville, Illinois - later taught at the Rock River Seminary. Rock River Seminary closed in 1878 and reopened as Mount Morris College.

Materials related to the students who were employed as a "normal" in a control group against individuals who were "less than normal," or having some sort of medical deficiency or problem. The studies took place at the National Institute of Health.
Speaker: Dr. Robert Neff, who at that time was General Secretary of the General Board of the Church of the Brethren. The speech was given on 1 October 1984.
Neher, Minnerva: Missionary to China, Correspondence
O. W. Neher served as Acting President at Mount Morris College following the presidency of Professor W. W. Peters and prior to that of C. Ernest Davies. His dates at Mount Morris spanned from 1924-1932. When a fire forced Mount Morris to close its doors and merge with Manchester College, Neher came to Manchester and taught Biology from 1932-1954.

Matriculation cards for all students enrolled in Manchester's 10-week relief training program. Student information included: name, marital status, rooming location, parent's name, home address, courses, grades.
C.P.S. Unit 101 Registrar's Records along with a brief history and reference material describing the creation of CPS Camp 101 and its sub-camps, of which Manchester College was one. Manchester College's 10-week program was directed locally by Dr. Andrew W. Cordier. The sixty-seventy CPS'ers were chosen by Brethren Service Committee, and the plan was for them to leave the country and begin relief and rehabilitation work immediately after the program's completion.

Vernon Schwalm was President of McPherson College, Kansas, when the decision was made for Mount Morris College to merge with Manchester College. This file contains correspondence of Schwalms opinions about the merger.

Laura Shock donated a Chinese Bible to Manchester College Library on 25 January 1923. The Archivist believes that this is the same Laura Shock that grauduated from Manchester College in 1916.

Shultz who worked and taught at Manchester College in various positions (Librarian, Mathematics, Religious Education, Principal of Preparatory Department, Academy, Modern Languages) during the years 1924-1943. Two autograph books, MC2011/90a beloning to Mary (Mollie) and Andrew Studebaker. It is the Archivist's theory that they were brother and sister and shared these books because autographs are written out to both Andrew Simonton and to Mollie and to Mary (the same individual). This book begins 1880 or 1881.
The second autograph book, MC2011/90b appears to belong to Mary Simonton (Mollie) and George Studebaker, her future husband has an inscription in the book on May 21, 1881.
The two diaries MC2011/90c and MC2011/90d are dated 1888 and 1936 and belonged to George Studebaker.

George L. Studebaker and Mary E. Simonton Studebaker photograph. "Uncle George" and "Aunt Mollie." According to Otho Winger, George L. Studebaker is one of the most familiar names connected with Manchester College. George was born in Illinois in 1861. He came with his parents to Indiana when two years old. He was called into the ministry in the Church of the Brethren in 1881 and married Mary E. Simonton in 1882. He was pastor of the Church of the Brethren in Muncie from 1897 to 1906. The family moved to North Manchester in order that their son, Mark E., might attend college. Here, George Studebaker served as field representative and Mrs. Studebaker as matron of the Ladies' Home. They became known to hundreds of students as "Uncle George" and "Aunt Mollie."
Ted Studebaker, MC Class of 1967, pacifist and conscientious objector - served as an agricultural worker during the Vietnam War. He was executed by North Vietnamese in 1971. This is a recording of the ABC News storoy by Jim Kincaid and an excerpt from the Church of the Brethren documentary on Ted Studebaker.

Rev. J. Edson Ulery was a Church of the Brethren minister who died in January of 1959. Two memory books, one for Sylvia and another for Edson, reflect the affection that people held for the couple. Edson's life story is available in a book, "A Heap of Living," by Cora W. Helman.

Sadie Stutsman Wampler graduated from Manchester College in 1916. This is the same year that she began entries in "The Hand O Graphs" book, and kept make entries for years following. This book comes with the instructions: Place your hand, palm downwards, on the paper and trace outline. There are a couple examples given, and then the individual is on her own to gather outlines of the hands of friends, family and celebrities on the following pages. It is like an autograph book for hands. The name of the individual is also recorded along with the date.

A copy of a letter written to Harold Yoder by J. Allen Willmert, College Librarian Emeritus, 9 April 1990 listing the books that Harold Yoder donated to Funderburg Library.
Harold Yoder wrote a special note to accompany his donation of the 1901 Hymnal. It stated that the 1901 Hymnal was used at the Camp Creek Church of the Brethren where his wife, Ella Yoder (deceased) worshipped as a girl.

Photograph: Miss Blickenstaff and colleague in Mahableswa, India, in costumes. It is not known if Miss Blickenstaff is a tourist, a missionary or if she is the Mary Blickenstaff referred to in the Brethren Encyclopedia. The Brethren Encyclopedia writes of a Lynn (Mt. Morris Academy) and Mary Blickenstaff (La VerneCollege) as traveling to India in 1921 where Lynn Blickenstaff served as mission treasurer. In 1935 Lynn became the manager of the Intermission Business Office in Bombay. Mary assisted in administration, taught and hosted missionaries and visitors. In 1946 the Church World Service asked Lynn to direct relief work in India Their son, David Blickenstaff, was a 1937 Manchester College graduate.

Although one can not be certain, it appears as if this photograph represents the Church of the Brethren congregation at North Liberty, Indiana and that it was taken outside the meeting house. Many of the sisters and elders appear to be wearing the Brethren garb.

Other letters deal with church extension loan notes. Also included is a report to the total employee group [of the Church of the Brethren?] on Revisions to The Group Insurance and Pension-Annuity Plans.

The Church of the Brethren was a contributing member of the United Clothing Appeal of the Churches or also known as the Church World Service Clothing Program. In Indiana there was an individual appointed to represent all of the Church of the Brethren districts. This person was given the title: Church of the Brethren Representative, Indiana State Clothing Committee. The file contains correspondence regarding the appointment of John Heisel to represent the state.

The file folder containing this message by Harry K. Zeller, Jr. has "Sugar Creek" written on the left hand corner. Perhaps Ferne Baldwin wrote this note to tell what congregation Harry Zeller was speaking to or was part of? The message is titled, "Brethren Declare Their Lenten Faith," and is dated 26 March 1944.

A large bible. The way the objects were organized it appears that this bible might be from the "Living Faith" Church of the Brethren, since the other bible was identified as being from "Flora." This bible is also beautifully engraved with illustrations.
An article from "The Missionary Visitor," May 1930, writes about Gandhi and his volunteers sweeping through Jalalpor where Miss E. B. Miller, native of Waterloo, Iowa, served as a missionary. This was written about in the New York Times.

William I. T. Hoover was born near Dayton, Ohio. Among other institutions, he studied at Mt. Morris Academy. He taught history and philosophy at Manchester College from 1901 - 1906.

The Krebiehl Bible is German. A note from Rob Gratz indicates that the bible might have been printed in Holland circa 1600. It also identifies the bible as coming from the Rossville Church of the Brethren, Indiana. More research is needed regarding the material written on the pages at the end of the book. Family history is traced from 1762, along with what appears to be apocalyptic beliefs in the creation of the numbers 666. The bible is beautifully illustrated:
An inscription at the beginning of the book has been translated:
My father, Peter Krebiehl, received this Bible from his father, Samuel Krebiehl. Upon my request he gave it to me, Jacob Krebiehl, his oldest son, as a gift. For this I owe him eternal gratitude. This Bible is therefore very dear and valuable to me. May God reward him with many blessings.
Ladoga - Bethel church records. Ladoga was part of the Southern Indiana District of the Church of the Brethren that was eventually combined with the Central Indiana District. The merger is now called the South-Central Indiana District of the Church of the Brethren.
Laura Wine was the head of obstetrics at the Lassa Mission Hospital in Nigeria. She was one of the first to die of what was to be called Lassa Fever, an unknown and deadly disease that erupted in Nigeria, Africa in 1969.

Beyond Anything Foreseen: A Study of the History of Higher Education in the Church of the Brethren.
Alexander Mack, leader of the Schwarzenomer Neutavfer (sic) [Schwarzenauer Neutäufer, or forerunners of the Church of the Brethren and related groups], wrote a letter to the Count of Ysenburg-Büdingen Moravianborn on 5 September 1711. The original letter is kept in the Archives of the Castle. It has been translated into modern German by Gudrun Meyer and into English by Barbara Ollesch.

Besides being a professor at Manchester College, T. Wayne Reiman was a leader within the Church of the Brethren. L. W. Teeter Collection: Lewis Wallace Teeter, (1845 - 1927). Mechanic, preacher, Bible expositor, Annual Meeting leader. Born Oct. 15 near Hagerstown, IN. Teeter taught himself basic Greek and German to supplement a limited secondary education. He married Nancy Ellen Bowman in 1866 and they joined the Nettle Creek (Hagerstown), IN congregation in 1968. The Annual Meeting asked Teeter to prepare a two-volume commentary on the New Testament (1894). These materials contain the original handwritten draft as well as published volumnes.
A record book kept of the meetings and collections of the Brethren's Sabbath School, North Manchester, Indiana. This record begins on 17 April 1887 and continues through 7 January 1889. Some of the individuals cited are Albert Wright, S. A. Ulrey, Bertha Grossnickle, David Miller, Charles Delaughter and Sallie Baer.
