Church as Peacemaker Conference, 1986MC2012/5 This conference featured Mary Travers, social activist and folk music star from the singing group, Peter, Paul and Mary.  The keynote speaker was Dr. Ronald Sider, Professor of Theology at Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary.  This was the 5th year for the conference, an ecumenical gathering sponsored by the college's Peace Studies Institute and the Howard John Peace and Justice Lectureship of the Manchester Church of the Brethren.

Finnell, Loren: AutobiographyMC2011/200 

Recipient of the Sargent Shriver Award by the National Peace Corps Association, and an honorary doctorate from Manchester College, Loren Finnell is a member of the Manchester College Class of 1964.

He composed a draft of a autobiography entitled, "Still a County Boy.....After having been around the world a couple of times, The memoirs of Loren Finnell." In this manuscript Loren relates his experience at Manchester College, including a clandestine trip to Washington, D.C. for a "Ban the Bomb" demonstration.

This handwritten book begins on December 11, 1930 and continues into 1935.  Individuals from North Manchester, and out of state, local high schools, the Manchester College library, the public library etc. have their periodical subscriptions recorded along with price and shipment address. The first known radio communication from the Manchester College campus was through an unlicensed amateur [HAM]radio station privately operated by the Singer brothers in 1927.  Their endeavor was entirely different from and unrelated to the first Manchester College radio station [WMIB] built by Dwight Farringer in 1945.  Francis Barr provides objects from the Singer brothers' interest and gives physical information about the construction of WMIB.

    Relief and Rehabilitation: C.P.S. Unit 101, Registrar's RecordsMC2004/9 

    C.P.S. Unit 101 Registrar's Records along with a brief history and reference material describing the creation of CPS Camp 101 and its sub-camps, of which Manchester College was one. Manchester College's 10-week program was directed locally by Dr. Andrew W. Cordier.  The sixty-seventy CPS'ers were chosen by Brethren Service Committee, and the plan was for them to leave the country and begin relief and rehabilitation work immediately after the program's completion.

Raymond Schutz - a man of many capabilities.  He was a professor at Manchester College, husband, father and farmer, public speaker, pastor and minister of the First Brethren Church in North Manchester, Indiana, candidate for Congress in 1932 (Indiana) and a contendor in the 1936 race for Governor. The researcher can get a feel for Pre WWII Indiana and Indiana during war.  Letters to soldiers are included as well as the names of men from North Manchester who were killed in the war.  Topics include: Prohibition, economic recovery from the Great Depression, and the impact of Hitler 's Germany on Europe. Schutz was a contemporary with Andrew Cordier who participated in some of Schutz's political involvements.

Raymond Schutz was a professor at Manchester College. He was also farmer, public speaker, pastor, candidate for Congress (Indiana,1932) and a contendor in the 1936 race for Governor. Schutz was an outstanding official in the local, state and International Kiwanis Club and became President, and then Chairman, of the Standard Life Insurance Company of Indiana.     Ted Studebaker, MC Class of 1967, pacifist and conscientious objector who served as an agricultural worker during the Vietnam War and was executed by North Vietnamese in 1971.

    He was also a musician and an album of his music is in the Manchester College Archives. The album and corresponding digital recording is located in the old Archives' Office.

    Tanimato, Kiyoshi: A Message of Warning and HopeConvocation Tape #135: Tanimato, Kiyoshi 

    Rev. Kiyoshi was a survivor of the bombing of Hiroshima and worked with victims of the bomb.  He raised funds for the Hiroshima Maidens project in which women, severly burned by the bomb, received constructive surgery. He also raised funds for a peace center in Hiroshima. His message was delivered on 11 October 1982.

    BC2010/51b: Book of writings about Peace, given by Russell R. Lambert, Dayton, Ohio, 1944, the great grandson of Peter Nead.  Written in the book is "This Book is the Property of Peter Nead."

    BC2010/51c:  "Peter Nead's Book" written on interior along with another inscription, "Given by Russell R. Lambert, R.I. Dayton, Ohio. On the very back page are the words, "Peter Nead's Book of Universalism."  The book title is, "Notes on the Parables of the New Testament, by  Hosea Ballou, Pastor of the Universalist Church and Society in Portsmouth, N.H.....,"1812."
