The booklet is called “Beaker Breakers’ Bi-Weekly” and was put out during the National Science Foundation Summer Chemistry Program at Manchester College.  It has was appears to be getting-to-know-you games and funny/interesting quips about participants.  This booklet is undated.

Edward G. Miller Council for Advancement and Support of Education Award [CASE].

CASE at Manchester College, newspaper article and special merit award, 1982 Mindpower Campaign.  CASE stands for Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

One periodical entitled, "Mennonite Family History," Volume XII, Number 1, January 1993.  This publication was probably kept by Archivist, Ferne Baldwin.  A special note is made about the article, "The Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, Cassel Family," by Mary Cassel Case. This article traces the ancestors of Benjamin and Maria Cassel, who were married in Montgomery County, Ohio, 1861, who both had the surname "Cassel."

Centennial Celebration Records; General material, including autographed program by Dr. William Sloane Coffin.

The Centennial Quilt was designed and quilted by Lydia Bowman '49 for Manchester's Centennial Celebration in 1989.

Chamber Singers faded out of existence in the 1990's and has since been revived by Debra Lynn to replace the Entertainers.  As of 2002-2003 school year, the new Chamber Singers performed a variety of repertoire from madrigals to jazz.

This memo book Compliments of Angelyn Coleman, '44-45 contains handwritten lyrics to songs.  There is also a handwritten title, "Chapel Program Nov 44." 

Chapel: Report of study on College chapel services.

One beautifully bound Chinese book with silk cover and gold flecked case presented to Dr. Winger by Hung Nien Cheng (President of Chi-nan University, see MC201194a,b). The book appears to be similar to MC2011/94a,b in content, but this is an elaborate edition. The subject appears to be the history of China, or an area in China, and contains fabulous architectural illustrations and photographs.

Choral Society has been known for its performance of oratorios and other major choral works.

Dr. James Baldwin directed the auditioned "80-voice oratorio chorus."  The ensemble included students and community members.

The Collegium Musicum was a "small vocal ensemble" according to the college catalog, but brought together vocalists and instrumentalists to perform early music.  Dr. John Planer founded and directed the ensemble.

Description:  Report written by Paul Keller about the Department of Speech and Drama, Manchester College, circa the 1960's.  It includes sections on:  Courses and course descriptions, collateral courses, teaching major and minor requirements, the Manchester Forensic Union, Tri-Alpha and the Radio Station WMIB.

According to the records of Ferne Baldwin, Fred Conkling taught English and Debating at Manchester College from 1923-1959.  He died 12 February 1962. 

This file includes a wide variety of materials related to conscientious objection including tax resistance, draft counseling, and peace related events.

Conscientious Objection: Draft Counselor's Kit

This collection contains all the paper documents and audio tape of interviews with Manchester Graduates and former Manchester students who served in Civilian Public Service in the late 1940s.

Photographs, periodicals, correspondence, audio recordings, video and VHS recordings of Manchester College students who, as conscientious objectors, served in Civilian Public Service projects during WWII.

Radio is a neglected art form, a medium no longer utilized.

Olympian, John Thomas, speaks on the topic of  "Olympic Harmony," or what makes an olympic champion? The date of the address is 6 February 1984.

Gene Sharp presents, "Gandhi's Challenge to Modern Politics," on 5 March 1984.  Nonviolent ways of solving problems in the world today.

Dr. Gene Sharp speaks on "Focus on Issues for Social Change," delivered on 2 October 1975.  Dr. Sharp has been described as the world's top theorist of nonviolent strategy.

Thandie Rankoe deliveres the address "Apartheid and the U.S. Role in South Africa," on 11 February 1985.  From South Africa, she and her family have fled the country.  Ms. Rankoe gives a woman's perspective to the issues of apartheid. 

Peace Studies and Co-Curricular Departments of the College invited Elizabeth McCallister and Phillip Berrigan to speak of their convictions. The cassette tape is dated 11 March 1976.

Discussion includes personal religious motives for prophetic activity.

In this 6 March 1989 presentation, Dr. William Sloane Coffin, Pres. of SANE/FREEZE speakes on , "Inaugurate Peace in 1989."

Reverend John Wolf delivers the convocation address on 14 November 1977.

The question of death. Life challenges deal with the question of rebirth. Death in fact is rebirth.

The archivist believes that this is the message of Dr. Mwalimu Imara, a contemporary and colleague of Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross.

Dr. Carl Caldwell delivers a presentation as part of the "Faculty Series," on 3 April 1978.  He talks about witches, witchcraft and witch beliefs to see the implications of all of this for us.

Dr. Gareth Porter speaks in convocation on 18 September 1978 on the topic of "U.S. Encounter with Viet Nam."

In this 9/29/1980 ceremony, Donald F. Durnbaugh receives the degree, Doctor of Humane Letters.  The degree is conferred by President Helman. Dr. Durnbaugh then gives the presentation, "Confessions of a Searcher."

Social Science Festival Speaker 

Marty Smeltzer West is the third and final speaker for the convocation Social Science series.   Marty was a student at Manchester from 1963 - 1965. She talks about, "One Woman's Journey into the Legal Profession," and "Confrontation with Choice." One reel-to-reel tape and two CD's, each recording portions of Ms. West's presentation. We as women are faced with too many choices, too many different roles we are asked to play and that we want to play.  The solution is to confront choices and make new societal structures as we go through changes in roles and life patterns that are inevitable for all of us.

Professor Colburn (Psychology), introduces Ms. West.

One reel-to-reel tape and a cassette tape.  The cassette tape is probably taken from the reel-to-reel.  In the first segment of the recording Dr. Virginia Mollenkott speaks on "Sexuality and the Formation of Family," 6 October 1980. She deals with the Biblical basis for male and female equality within the covenant community. 

The second part of the reel-to-reel tape starts abruptly in the middle of a presenetation by a speaker with a different voice making reference to health issues and safety standard regulations related to coal miners and workers laboring in conditions working with various levels of radiation.  This appears to be the introduction to a two day conference. The choir also sings at this opening and there is a worship service.   The date referred to on the tape is 1975.  The reel-to-reel tape was probably first used in 1975 for this service and then used to record Mollenkott.

The Hygienic Laboratory was prepared to make sanitary examinations such as:

1. The examination of water for impurities as germs producing disease...

2.  Tests for the presence of germs causing Consumption in cases where the disease is suspected, also in the milk supply which often contains these bacteria.

3.  The chemical examination of the water of the body (urinalysis).

4.  An examination of the blood by means of special instruments for that purpose to ascertain indications of disease.

There are NINE of these examinations in total.

Material regarding L. D. Ikenberry [Levi Daniel] who between 1900 and 1943,taught mathematics, science, astronomy, pedagogy, geology, and served as treasurer, vice president, and acting president of Manchester College.  Ikenberry Hall was named in his honor.  He died on December 29, 1957.

Ann Blair, Jan Deaton, Dodie Heiny, Ann Lawver, and Linda Zumbrun were the student artists who sang these songs.  This was an independent group of Manchester College students unrelated to the College's music program.

PEMM Club stands for Physical Education Majors and Minors Club.  The club was started in 1964 with the purposes of helping physical education majors get acquainted, sharing ideas, promoting physical education interests, offering opportunities for practical experiences in the field, supplying information for job opportunities, and developing assistants for the physical education department.  Mr. James Gratz was the first faculty advisor. This file contains the constitution, and minutes 1981-1988.

Pep Band:

The year prior to September 1994, students had organized a volunteer pep Band that played at football and basketball games.  The Pep Band was continued in 1994.  Butterbaugh agreed to raise money to furnish the Band with sport shirts and jackets.  This letter requests that recipients contribute $100 each to defray the cost of shirts and jackets.

These news releases primarily feature guest artists performing on campus, some through the College Union Board and the  Artist-Lecture Series. Examples of the performers are; The Dale Warland Singers of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., rock concert by "Featherstitch," the Goldovsky Grand Opera Theater, the Arbors, Leonard Rose (cellist), The Lettermen, Duke Ellington, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Si Zentner (trombonist), Eugene Holmes (baritone), The Four Saints, the new York Brass Quintet, the Concert Choir of Columbus Senior High School.

2.  An assortment of newspaper articles regarding performers appearing at Manchester College    (1960's - 1990's).

Newspaper articles include:  Rosa Page Welch (classical sacred musical singer), The Sounds of Hope.

Sadie S. Wampler directed many wonderful theatrical productions on campus.  This correspondence deals with royalties for the play, "The Devil Passes."

• The cast of players and singers includes individuals graduating in 1917, 1918, 1922...so the program probably took place 1917 or earlier.  This humorous event quips:
• In Ye Borough of North Manchester, On Ye 19th Day of November.  Ye Doors Will be Open at Earlie Candle Light.  Ye Synging Will Begin at 7:45 by Ye Tymebeater's watch.
• N. B.  Lester Bowser will attend to ye snuffin' of ye candles.
• N. B.  If at any tyme ye desire to heare ye sweet strains again, ye will clap ye hands and not stampe or scrape ye unseemlie.
• N. B.  Ye syngers will bring ye tune books, and slippery elm for ye voice, less they syng falslie.
• N. B.  A solemn silence should prevade ye assembly; yet peradventure some of ye tunes be funny, a little laughter may be indulged, but ye listeners are not to think they can do better than ye syngers.

The Constitution and Bylaws of the Philorhetorian Literary Society of Manchester College.

A packet of materials was dropped at the Front Desk of the Library by an unidentified individual during the month of July 2011.  The contents contained photographs from Manchester College and one paper fan from a local funeral home.  The Archivist believes this assortment was received from former Archivist, Ferne Baldwin. Two of the photographs were of the "Flying Club?" and were accessioned as MC2011/190.  A listing of the remaining objects follows:

1.  One fan from George N. Bender & Son Funderal Directors, North Manchester, Indiana.  The picture on the fan is that of a young mother holding a sleeping baby in her arms and is titled, "Loves Gift Divine." This fan will be filed in the Local History Box of the Archives by its accession number MC2011/192fan.

2.  Eight Photographs:

Two photographs of the gymnasium layout for a program held in June 1967.  At first glance, until looking at the date, it appears as if this could be for baccalaureate and commencement exercises.

One photograph of Student Alumni Service Award recipients, Cynthia Bull (MC Class of 1990) and Matthew Smucker (MC Class of 1990) as well as Alumni Service Award reciptients Robin Lahman, Florence Freed (MC Class of 1928) and Helen Taylor (MC Class of 1973).

Ungraded reports submitted to Professor Stacey Erickson during January term 2010 for the class, Culture of the Book.  Reports give information about bibles, books and periodicals from the Funderbury Library rare book collection.

It appears that two unrelated recordings are on one reel-to-reel audio tape.  The first, on Track #1, presents readings by students for the study of oral interpretation.  The inclusion of student, Frank Barkdoll, on the tape would date his reading as taking place somewhere between 1959 and 1963.

Track #2 is of an ASCD education meeting featuring Harold Taylor and Gardner Murphy. 

Resume, notes on life, personal notebook, class books and notes for teaching, etc. by D. C. Reber.  D.C. Reber taught education and ancient languages at Manchester College from 1917 until 1942.  The collection also includes biographical newspaper articles about his life and interests.

MC2011/235b: Copies of correspondence between A. Blair Helman and Dr. Jo Young Switzer as well as material related to Helman, President Emeritus,Parker Marden and President Jo Young Switzer. 

Rev. Kiyoshi was a survivor of the bombing of Hiroshima and worked with victims of the bomb.  He raised funds for the Hiroshima Maidens project in which women, severly burned by the bomb, received constructive surgery. He also raised funds for a peace center in Hiroshima. His message was delivered on 11 October 1982.

Information about George Tannreuther who was the first college graduate of Manchester College in 1900.  Tannreuther became professor of Zoology at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

What makes this album interesting in the amount of history it records.  There are articles about Church of the Brethren missionaries, the Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren  in Elgin, Illinois, Church of the Brethren ministers and leaders, as well as personal stories about the compiler and folks this individual knows.  It is a shame that the source remains unknown.

William I. T. Hoover was born near Dayton, Ohio.  Among other institutions, he studied at Mt. Morris Academy.  He taught history and philosophy at Manchester College from 1901 - 1906.

Laura Wine was the head of obstetrics at the Lassa Mission Hospital in Nigeria. She was one of the first to die of what was to be called Lassa Fever, an unknown and deadly disease that erupted in Nigeria, Africa in 1969.
