Eugene Crouch began teaching at Manchester College in 1895, his career at the institution stretching from 1895-1910. He died on March 18, 1941. See Also: President Young's wife wrote a history of the Young Brothers' purchase of Manchester College. There are imperfections in spelling, but it appears as if Professor Crouch is mentioned in this history and it would be worth a researcher's read. | Lassa Fever: President Jo Young Switzer, Parkview North, Honorees | MC2011/191 | This file contains a copy of August 2011 Notes from the President in which a mural at Parkview North emergency room is described. President Jo was asked to paint a square of the mural that depicts an "Everyday Star" whose non-work life embraces generosity and service. She chose John Hamer (MC Class of 1948) who worked with his wife, Esther (MC Class of 1950) as medical missionaries in Nigeria. Besides being a physician, Dr. Hamer was a scientiest who helped to discover one of the world's deadliest viruses -- Lassa Fever. Two other Manchester College graduates were honored as being "Everyday Stars" in the mural, Dr. Jane Weaver (Everyday Star #156) and Daryl Yost (Everyday Star #108). | Manchester College: Historical Movies | MC2009/147a,b,c | This collection of historical movies comes from the latter years of Otho Winger's presidency and the early years of Schwalm's. The Archivist believes a clip is from Schwalm's inauguration in the fall of 1941. Several graduations are documented, one in which Winger hold a lighted candle and lights a candle for each robed student. Moving pictures of May Days, for at least two years....complete with gymnasts, male tumblers in short-shorts, a funny costumed bull (two people) and bull fighter, dances around the Maypole, the May Day Queen and entourage, and parade. Camp Mack day showing student and professors arriving/departing by train and playing games and eating at Camp Mack. Homecoming, including "Blitzkreig on Valpo." Homecoming parade? Probably a promotional segment where a veiled young woman visits Manchester College with her mother, father and brother. Their car pulls up next to the tennis courts and they exit the car and walk slowly to the Administration building.

She continued to live in North Manchester and worked for an insurance office (The College Standard, June 1901, Vol. III, No. 1) and it is noted in the Manchester College Catlogue 1907, with announcements for 1907-1908 that she worked as a bookkeeper (company not noted, perhaps the same one as previously mentioned.). Her file contains copies from The College Standard and the Manchester College Catalogues that talk about the commercial department at the college and reasons why young women might consider a commercial education. Class cards and records are in Filing Cabinet and in Large Box 125. Restricted access. |
| Photograph and Memorabilia Assortment | MC2011/192 | A packet of materials was dropped at the Front Desk of the Library by an unidentified individual during the month of July 2011. The contents contained photographs from Manchester College and one paper fan from a local funeral home. The Archivist believes this assortment was received from former Archivist, Ferne Baldwin. Two of the photographs were of the "Flying Club?" and were accessioned as MC2011/190. A listing of the remaining objects follows: 1. One fan from George N. Bender & Son Funderal Directors, North Manchester, Indiana. The picture on the fan is that of a young mother holding a sleeping baby in her arms and is titled, "Loves Gift Divine." This fan will be filed in the Local History Box of the Archives by its accession number MC2011/192fan. 2. Eight Photographs: Two photographs of the gymnasium layout for a program held in June 1967. At first glance, until looking at the date, it appears as if this could be for baccalaureate and commencement exercises. One photograph of Student Alumni Service Award recipients, Cynthia Bull (MC Class of 1990) and Matthew Smucker (MC Class of 1990) as well as Alumni Service Award reciptients Robin Lahman, Florence Freed (MC Class of 1928) and Helen Taylor (MC Class of 1973). Two color snapshots of the footfield field with chairs, platform and band. This is possibly for graduation exercises. | Studebaker, George L. and Mary E.: Photograph | MC2004/634 | George L. Studebaker and Mary E. Simonton Studebaker photograph. "Uncle George" and "Aunt Mollie." According to Otho Winger, George L. Studebaker is one of the most familiar names connected with Manchester College. George was born in Illinois in 1861. He came with his parents to Indiana when two years old. He was called into the ministry in the Church of the Brethren in 1881 and married Mary E. Simonton in 1882. He was pastor of the Church of the Brethren in Muncie from 1897 to 1906. The family moved to North Manchester in order that their son, Mark E., might attend college. Here, George Studebaker served as field representative and Mrs. Studebaker as matron of the Ladies' Home. They became known to hundreds of students as "Uncle George" and "Aunt Mollie." |

This is the same year that she began entries in "The Hand O Graphs" book, and kept make entries for years following. This book comes with the instructions: Place your hand, palm downwards, on the paper and trace outline. There are a couple examples given, and then the individual is on her own to gather outlines of the hands of friends, family and celebrities on the following pages. It is like an autograph book for hands. The name of the individual is also recorded along with the date. |
