The 1981 Gym-A-Thon was organized by students interested in raising money for the new athletic complex (the PERC) that was under construction. When construction began two million dollars was available. Due to 24% inflation an additional 1.5 million dollars was needed to complete the project. Students, faculty and staff participated in a 25-mile jaunt to raise extra money. People over 25 years old could ride a bike. Therefore, a Walk-a-thon plus Bike-a-thon was included in Gym-a-thon.
