United Sexualities:  A group focusing on providing support to members of the GLBT community working to educate and promote dialogue amidst the Manchester community concerning issues of sexual minorities (for example, provides "safe zone" training).

Friends for Sexual Awareness:  A student-initiated group working to educate people about the different risks involved in unhealthy sexual lifestyles and the options surrounding safe sex.  It provides confidential information and support to people who are struggling with sex-related concerns.

This collection contains all the paper documents and audio tape of interviews with Manchester Graduates and former Manchester students who served in Civilian Public Service in the late 1940s.

William Stafford (1914-1993), US Poet Laureate 1970, received Relief and Rehabilitation* training in Civilian Public Service Camp 101 at Manchester College 1943, was member of MC English faculty 1955-56, and visited the college many other times. See letter in collection for further information.

Certificate of membership in the National Association of College Auxiliary Services dated 17 October 1983.

C.P.S. Unit 101 Registrar's Records along with a brief history and reference material describing the creation of CPS Camp 101 and its sub-camps, of which Manchester College was one. Manchester College's 10-week program was directed locally by Dr. Andrew W. Cordier.  The sixty-seventy CPS'ers were chosen by Brethren Service Committee, and the plan was for them to leave the country and begin relief and rehabilitation work immediately after the program's completion.

"Tributes to 'Doc'" was compiled on Dr. Niswander's retirement from the College.  Dr. Niswander was hired by Manchester College in 1950 as the replacement for Dr. Kintner. He spent 30 years as an instructor, retiring in May of 1981.

 O. W. Neher served as Acting President at Mount Morris College following the presidency of Professor W. W. Peters and prior to that of C. Ernest Davies. His dates at Mount Morris spanned from 1924-1932.   When a fire forced Mount Morris to close its doors and merge with Manchester College, Neher came to Manchester and taught Biology from 1932-1954.

Professor Charles Klingler taught English at Manchester College for 35 years [1959 - 1994]. 1961).  This is a historical description of his work including but not limited to; "Writing Across the Curriculum," "Writing to Learn," and syllabi for the Humanities Core.

A conference entitled "An Institute on Christian World Order," featuring Japanese activist, Kagawa, took place at Manchester College in 1936.

During the Vietnam War era, Manchester College faced criticism from its own students as well as from outside entities. Correspondence and other material regarding the College's handling of the issues surrounding the Vietnam War.

1999 - 2000 Hawthorne Program

The Lilly Endowment funded Hawthorne Program was designed to help prepare African American and Hispanic students (grades 6-8) for college or other educational opportunities beyond high school. The Program's Mission follows:

To empower African American and Hispanic youth to tap their learning potential, increase their understanding of educational possibilities, and help them to envision themselves as future leaders.

The Summer Academic Enhancement Program was a two week residential experience held on the campus of Manchester College.  It was designed to enhance the students' skills in math, science, writing, reading and drama.  At the close of the two weeks, parents were invited on campus to spend the night and to attend the student-led closing program.  The summer session included a weekend visit to another college or university.

Two academic institutes were held during the school year, one in the fall and one in the spring.  Manchester College students hosted program participants for a weekend stay on campus.  The institutes provided the middle school students a firsthand understanding of life on a college campus and enhanced their skills in a specific subject area.

Monthly educational seminars were esigned to give support and information to parents and guardians about the program.  Discussions included how to prepare for and finance a college education.  The meetings were held in Fort Wayne and South Bend.

Tutorial sessions were provided during the school year and were offered weekdays by partner organizations.  Sessions were designed to assist students with homework and to improve study skills.

Social, cultural and educational activities were planned by the Outreach Coordinators and varied in focus to provide diverse social, cultural and educational experiences. These activities included bowling, a library tour, lectures, local college tours, community service and visits to museums.

Section One - Male Student Discussion:

The recording begins with some type of discussion group.  The facilitator initiates conversation and the talk is of joining the military and of sports.

Section Two - Presentations

Female students present viewpoints about the middle east, Nassar and the Arab Nations, and the Suez Canal.

Section Three - Radio Program - WJR the Goodwill Station, with the announcer, Johnny Russell

A Journalism class Centennial Interview by Timothy K. Jones, 16 September 1988 in which Mr. Jones asks student to reflect on questions that he presents dealing with the College.

A Manchester College Centennial Interview with President Helman on 8 June 1988 by Timothy Jones.

A packet of materials was dropped at the Front Desk of the Library by an unidentified individual during the month of July 2011.  The contents contained photographs from Manchester College and one paper fan from a local funeral home.  The Archivist believes this assortment was received from former Archivist, Ferne Baldwin. Two of the photographs were of the "Flying Club?" and were accessioned as MC2011/190.  A listing of the remaining objects follows:

1.  One fan from George N. Bender & Son Funderal Directors, North Manchester, Indiana.  The picture on the fan is that of a young mother holding a sleeping baby in her arms and is titled, "Loves Gift Divine." This fan will be filed in the Local History Box of the Archives by its accession number MC2011/192fan.

2.  Eight Photographs:

Two photographs of the gymnasium layout for a program held in June 1967.  At first glance, until looking at the date, it appears as if this could be for baccalaureate and commencement exercises.

One photograph of Student Alumni Service Award recipients, Cynthia Bull (MC Class of 1990) and Matthew Smucker (MC Class of 1990) as well as Alumni Service Award reciptients Robin Lahman, Florence Freed (MC Class of 1928) and Helen Taylor (MC Class of 1973).

• College feels deeply the tragic effects of war.
• 165 freshmen enrolled.

A. B. Ulrey: First biology teacher at Manchester College, born near North Manchester, Indiana.

An assortment of photographs and memorabilia about Dan West, his family and Heifer Project. These items were given to Janet Schrock, Dan West's daughter, by different individuals, including videographer, David Sollenberger.

Ann Blair, Jan Deaton, Dodie Heiny, Ann Lawver, and Linda Zumbrun were the student artists who sang these songs.  This was an independent group of Manchester College students unrelated to the College's music program.

D. C. Reber, was the manager of Manchester Subscription Agency. Prof. Reber’s service would have been like toady’s EBSCO – a centralized vendor of periodical subscriptions. This handwritten book begins on December 11, 1930 and continues into 1935.  Individuals from North Manchester, and out of state, local high schools, the Manchester College library, the public library etc. have their periodical subscriptions recorded along with price and shipment address. D. C. Reber is the Manager of the agency whose address is 901 N. Wayne St., North Manchester, Indiana.

Elder Robert Henry Miller, minister in the Church of the Brethren had a son, Manchester College Professor Robert Henry Miller, a minister as well.  The accession page gives information about both father and son. MC2009/87 is the manuscript of an unpublished book by Professor R. H. Miller, "Comments on the Gospel of John."

L. D. Ikenberry surveys land with students, possibly for the frame gym.

L. D. Ikenberry was an architect and responsible for much of the rebuilding and remodeling on the early campus during the presidency of Otho Winger.  In this photo the Bible Building and Bumgerdner Hall had not yet been connected.  It appears that L. D. Ikenberry and most-likely, students, are surveying in preparation to construct another building.  The construction of the gym was planned and announced by Winger to the Board of Trustees on 25 September 1911.

One photograph of the Philorhetoria Literary Society circa 1931, with five students identified.

One reel-to-reel tape and a cassette tape.  The cassette tape is probably taken from the reel-to-reel.  In the first segment of the recording Dr. Virginia Mollenkott speaks on "Sexuality and the Formation of Family," 6 October 1980. She deals with the Biblical basis for male and female equality within the covenant community. 

The second part of the reel-to-reel tape starts abruptly in the middle of a presenetation by a speaker with a different voice making reference to health issues and safety standard regulations related to coal miners and workers laboring in conditions working with various levels of radiation.  This appears to be the introduction to a two day conference. The choir also sings at this opening and there is a worship service.   The date referred to on the tape is 1975.  The reel-to-reel tape was probably first used in 1975 for this service and then used to record Mollenkott.

Papers written for Professor Kendall Roger's class on Brethren heritage.  They range in date from 1990 to 1992.  The topics are varied and include but are not limited to: Church of the Brethren history, the legacy of certain individuals,  architecture,  Brethren beliefs and Church of the Brethren programs.

Part of a larger collection, records for Service Fellowship, a student group, contain financial records for General, Relief and Work Camps, for the years 1939 - 1940 and 1940 - 1941.

Pat Helman begins this tape and other voices are added.  It is a spiritual star search in quest of understanding God. The victory of light over darkness as a symbol of the living God that rules in the heavens. This narration was to accompany a slide presentation.

Personal journal/scrap book filled with clippings about her concerts, performances she had seen, notes and interesting memorabilia.  Also included is a detailed family history entitled, "Pedigree."  It begins with Wolford Webber, the 4th King of Holland, born about 1577.

Taken from a fact sheet entitled, Manchester College New Faculty 1986: William Robinson, President, comes from the National College of Education where he was Senior Vice-President for Institutional Advancement.  He holds degrees from the University of Northern Iowa, Wheaton College, and the University of Pittsburgh.  He  has taught courses in his field of organizational communication and research and has held several administrative positions.   

Small Box 25 contains materials relating to President WIlliam Robinson.

The Holl-Kintner Hall of Science was constructed during the first phase of the March of Progress fundraising campaign was named in honor of  Professors Holl and Kintner.  These portraits were located in the lobby of Holl-Kintner Hall of Science.

This file contains a copy of August 2011 Notes from the President in which a mural at Parkview North emergency room is described. President Jo was asked to paint a square of the mural that depicts an "Everyday Star" whose non-work life embraces generosity and service.  She chose John Hamer (MC Class of 1948) who worked with his wife, Esther (MC Class of 1950) as medical missionaries in Nigeria.  Besides being a physician, Dr. Hamer was a scientiest who helped to discover one of the world's deadliest viruses -- Lassa Fever.

Two other Manchester College graduates were honored as being "Everyday Stars" in the mural, Dr. Jane Weaver (Everyday Star #156) and Daryl Yost (Everyday Star #108).

A thank you letter from John and Esther Hamer to President Jo Switzer is also in the file.

Thurl Donald Metzger is a Manchester College alumnus and member of Manchester College Class of 1938.   He was a recipient of the Laymen's Citation Award, an award given by Manchester College to honor outstanding members of the Church of the Brethren.

In 1946 there were many returning students that were veterans or who had been  in Civilian Public Service. Student housing was at a premium.  Some married couples were lucky to get rooms in trailers parked near campus.  Leo and Ginny Morris found an alternative solution, a brand new chicken coop placed in Professor Paul Halladay's back yard!

Photograph: Miss Blickenstaff and colleague in Mahableswa, India, in costumes.  It is not known if Miss Blickenstaff is a tourist, a missionary or if she is the Mary Blickenstaff referred to in the Brethren Encyclopedia.  The Brethren Encyclopedia writes of a Lynn (Mt. Morris Academy) and Mary Blickenstaff (La VerneCollege) as traveling to India in 1921 where Lynn Blickenstaff served as mission treasurer.  In 1935 Lynn became the manager of the Intermission Business Office in Bombay.  Mary assisted in administration, taught and hosted missionaries and visitors.  In 1946 the Church World Service asked Lynn to direct relief work in India    Their son, David Blickenstaff, was a 1937 Manchester College graduate.
