Dr. Carl Caldwell delivers a presentation as part of the "Faculty Series," on 3 April 1978.  He talks about witches, witchcraft and witch beliefs to see the implications of all of this for us.

Rev. Kiyoshi was a survivor of the bombing of Hiroshima and worked with victims of the bomb.  He raised funds for the Hiroshima Maidens project in which women, severly burned by the bomb, received constructive surgery. He also raised funds for a peace center in Hiroshima. His message was delivered on 11 October 1982.

Olympian, John Thomas, speaks on the topic of  "Olympic Harmony," or what makes an olympic champion? The date of the address is 6 February 1984.

Thandie Rankoe deliveres the address "Apartheid and the U.S. Role in South Africa," on 11 February 1985.  From South Africa, she and her family have fled the country.  Ms. Rankoe gives a woman's perspective to the issues of apartheid. 

In this 6 March 1989 presentation, Dr. William Sloane Coffin, Pres. of SANE/FREEZE speakes on , "Inaugurate Peace in 1989."

How Viable is Capitalism? The presenter speaks on one out of five topics that included

Dr. Gareth Porter speaks in convocation on 18 September 1978 on the topic of "U.S. Encounter with Viet Nam."

Nuclear Power Discussion: One of 5 recordings in a series of panel discussions and workshops about nuclear power held on 27 March 1979 at Manchester College.

The first speaker is Kenneth Shank (spelling?).

59b: Nuclear Discussion Workshop, Seelman Weaver #1, 27 March 1979, representing the opinion of the National Council of Churches Study on nuclear energy and other alternative energies.

One reel-to-reel tape and a cassette tape.  The cassette tape is probably taken from the reel-to-reel.  In the first segment of the recording Dr. Virginia Mollenkott speaks on "Sexuality and the Formation of Family," 6 October 1980. She deals with the Biblical basis for male and female equality within the covenant community. 

The second part of the reel-to-reel tape starts abruptly in the middle of a presenetation by a speaker with a different voice making reference to health issues and safety standard regulations related to coal miners and workers laboring in conditions working with various levels of radiation.  This appears to be the introduction to a two day conference. The choir also sings at this opening and there is a worship service.   The date referred to on the tape is 1975.  The reel-to-reel tape was probably first used in 1975 for this service and then used to record Mollenkott.

Jackson, Blyden:

African American author professor, dean and pioneer in the study of African American literature. Blyden Jackson visited Manchester College in the fall of 1966.  Two photographs of Manchester College faculty at a luncheon with Mr. Jackson. Faculty included are :  Herbert Ingraham, Charles Klingler, Margaret Brown, Doris Garey, and Orrel Little.

On 13 May 1969, a mass marriage ceremony and tent-in took place on the Manchester College campus.  The purpose was to initiate a "change in attitude...tak[ing] the form of students assuming freedom and responsibility in determining the direction of their lives."

Mrs. Genita Speicher was Associate Professor of Music for 29 years, retiring in 1976.  This collection includes but is not limited to her personal journal/scrap book, photographs, clippings, performances, and interesting memorabilia.

Old Ampex reel-to-reel format tapes including the lectures given by professors such as Gary Deavel, Jim Hollis, John Planer, Steven Batzka, Charles Klinger, James R. C. Adams, and others.  The college does not have the equipment necessary to listen to some of these recordings.

In 2009 and 2010 Pittman and his staff were able to digitize some of the recordings that were on particular types of tape.

This collection of historical movies comes from the latter years of Otho Winger's presidency and the early years of Schwalm's. The Archivist believes a clip is from Schwalm's inauguration in the fall of 1941.

Several graduations are documented, one in which Winger hold a lighted candle and lights a candle for each robed student. 

Moving pictures of May Days, for at least two years....complete with gymnasts, male tumblers in short-shorts, a funny costumed bull (two people) and bull fighter, dances around the Maypole, the May Day Queen and entourage, and parade.

Dr. Gene Sharp speaks on "Focus on Issues for Social Change," delivered on 2 October 1975.  Dr. Sharp has been described as the world's top theorist of nonviolent strategy.

Peace Studies and Co-Curricular Departments of the College invited Elizabeth McCallister and Phillip Berrigan to speak of their convictions. The cassette tape is dated 11 March 1976.

Discussion includes personal religious motives for prophetic activity.

Four photographs of what appears to be the Flying Club

The 1967 Aurora features the Flying Club on pgs. 62 and 63.

A packet of materials was dropped at the Front Desk of the Library by an unidentified individual during the month of July 2011.  The contents contained photographs from Manchester College and one paper fan from a local funeral home.  The Archivist believes this assortment was received from former Archivist, Ferne Baldwin. Two of the photographs were of the "Flying Club?" and were accessioned as MC2011/190.  A listing of the remaining objects follows:

1.  One fan from George N. Bender & Son Funderal Directors, North Manchester, Indiana.  The picture on the fan is that of a young mother holding a sleeping baby in her arms and is titled, "Loves Gift Divine." This fan will be filed in the Local History Box of the Archives by its accession number MC2011/192fan.

2.  Eight Photographs:

Two photographs of the gymnasium layout for a program held in June 1967.  At first glance, until looking at the date, it appears as if this could be for baccalaureate and commencement exercises.

One photograph of Student Alumni Service Award recipients, Cynthia Bull (MC Class of 1990) and Matthew Smucker (MC Class of 1990) as well as Alumni Service Award reciptients Robin Lahman, Florence Freed (MC Class of 1928) and Helen Taylor (MC Class of 1973).

Two color snapshots of the footfield field with chairs, platform and band.  This is possibly for graduation exercises.

Comedian and Civil Rights leader, Dick Gregory, spoke on the Manchester College campus during "An Experience in Soul," March 30 - April 1, 1969.  This is a copy of his presentation, "Forum 69."

MC2008/129: Photos from Dick Gregory's visit.

Ann Blair, Jan Deaton, Dodie Heiny, Ann Lawver, and Linda Zumbrun were the student artists who sang these songs.  This was an independent group of Manchester College students unrelated to the College's music program. 

An assortment of photographs and memorabilia about Dan West, his family and Heifer Project. These items were given to Janet Schrock, Dan West's daughter, by different individuals, including videographer, David Sollenberger.

A collection of short faculty speeches on the topic of why they chose to teach at Manchester College.  The presentations are dated from 1993 forwards through 2003.

In this 9/29/1980 ceremony, Donald F. Durnbaugh receives the degree, Doctor of Humane Letters.  The degree is conferred by President Helman. Dr. Durnbaugh then gives the presentation, "Confessions of a Searcher."

For another presentation by Dr. Durnbaugh listen to his 1986 Baccalaureate address, "Faith Seeking Understanding." This cassette tape is in the cassette tape drawers (in a lower drawer) and has also been digitized onto a CD.  The CD is in a CD holder on top of the cassette tape drawers.

This convocation tape is labeled, Ken Hartman, Convo of 10/27/1978.  He talks of life design and career decision making.

Helman opening Spring Term of the academic year.   The box is dated 1/29/1978. This could be wrong. The actual date could be 1/29/1979.  Helman states that the College is opening an anniversary year and that During the 1979 calendar year, MC will be observing its 90th anniversary.  1979 is an anniversary year.

Dr. Anna Mow graduated from Manchester Collage in 1918.  A Church of the Brethren icon, Anna speaks on "Spiritual Vitality and the American Family."

Social Science Festival Speaker 

Marty Smeltzer West is the third and final speaker for the convocation Social Science series.   Marty was a student at Manchester from 1963 - 1965. She talks about, "One Woman's Journey into the Legal Profession," and "Confrontation with Choice." One reel-to-reel tape and two CD's, each recording portions of Ms. West's presentation. We as women are faced with too many choices, too many different roles we are asked to play and that we want to play.  The solution is to confront choices and make new societal structures as we go through changes in roles and life patterns that are inevitable for all of us.

Laura Wine was the head of obstetrics at the Lassa Mission Hospital in Nigeria. She was one of the first to die of what was to be called Lassa Fever, an unknown and deadly disease that erupted in Nigeria, Africa in 1969.

What makes this album interesting in the amount of history it records.  There are articles about Church of the Brethren missionaries, the Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren  in Elgin, Illinois, Church of the Brethren ministers and leaders, as well as personal stories about the compiler and folks this individual knows.  It is a shame that the source remains unknown.

This reel-to-reel tape entitled, "A Look at the Brethren," was produced by Dean Frantz.  It answers questions about the Church of the Brethren:

What do they do? 

This appears to be  the audio portion of a slide show or filmstrip that describes the Church of the Brethren.
