Football History at Manchester Collge: Newspaper Articles
Newspaper articles from the Plain Dealer, 6 September 1974 celebrating the 50th anniversary of football at Manchester College. A history of football is given along with interesting memories of Emera Hearne, a member of the first football team at Manchester College. A photograph of Manchester' college's all time scoring leader (as of 1974), Johnny Piper," is included as is a group shot of the first team of 1924, along with the players' names.
On 13 May 1969, a mass marriage ceremony and tent-in took place on the Manchester College campus. The purpose was to initiate a "change in attitude...tak[ing] the form of students assuming freedom and responsibility in determining the direction of their lives."
Addresses authored and delivered by President A. Blair Helman were found in the Archives vault by the Archivist. Eight of the speeches are not identified as being Helman's but they are clearly composed in Helman's writing style. Also, they had been stacked with Helman speeches that do identify Helman as author either through label or content. It is the Archivist's belief that all of the writings are those of A. Blair Helman.
Collection of newspapers and magazines from 1918 through 1974. The first article is titled, "Kaiser Abdicates Throne; Surrender Is At Hand, Say German Socialists." The last article is headlined, "Nixon's transcription of Watergate Tapes, The next question: Will House be satisfied?"
On 12 June 1958, Carl Waldo Holl received a College Chemistry Teacher Award from the Manufacturing Chemists' Association (MCA).

Thurl Donald Metzger is a Manchester College alumnus and member of Manchester College Class of 1938. He was a recipient of the Laymen's Citation Award, an award given by Manchester College to honor outstanding members of the Church of the Brethren.

Elder Robert Henry Miller, minister in the Church of the Brethren had a son, Manchester College Professor Robert Henry Miller, a minister as well. He was a professor at Manchester College, husband, father and farmer, public speaker, pastor and minister of the First Brethren Church in North Manchester, Indiana, candidate for Congress in 1932 (Indiana) and a contendor in the 1936 race for Governor. The researcher can get a feel for Pre WWII Indiana and Indiana during war. Letters to soldiers are included as well as the names of men from North Manchester who were killed in the war. Topics include: Prohibition, economic recovery from the Great Depression, and the impact of Hitler 's Germany on Europe. Schutz was a contemporary with Andrew Cordier who participated in some of Schutz's political involvements.

He was also farmer, public speaker, pastor, candidate for Congress (Indiana,1932) and a contendor in the 1936 race for Governor. As Director of Camp Alexander Mack in Milford, Indiana, L.W. Shultz sponsored the tours of the Cotton Blossom Singers of The Piney Woods Country Life School, located in Piney Woods, Mississippi. He also spoke at Piney Woods on several occasions.

In response to the racially charged sit-down demonstrations of Spring 1960, the Peace Fellowship group at Manchester College entered the May Day parade with 22 sign-carrying students under the banner "Stand Up for the Sit Downs."
Dr. Garner, who had been affiliated with the Environmental Protection Agency, talks about pollution, the auto industry, catalytic converters and their pollutants, consumption for consumption sake, oil shortages, and the idea that "technology can disrupt nature but it can't transcend it." To help control pollution and our environment we must ask ourselves, "What REALLY are our NEEDS and not our DESIRES?" Fulfilling our material desires will lead to more production and to more pollution.
Later in the tape, President Helman is captured giving an address about Manchester College and higher education in a Christian college. He also touches on environmental concerns. This tape was probably recorded over several times.
