Jerry Brand '63, a professor of molecular cell and developmental biology, is a groundbreaking researcher whose discoveries may hold a key to our energy future. He oversees the world's largest and most diverse culture collection of algae, housed at the University of Texas, where he has taught since 1974. Jerry's research centers on finding algae that produce oil to be processed into biofuel, which, in turn, could run automobile engines.[Read citation] |
Chuck Chaffee '64 is chief executive officer and co-founder of BRC Rubber & Plastics Inc., which designs, tests and manufactures rubber and plastic parts primarily for the automotive industry. The company employs more than 500 people at Indiana production plants, including its headquarters in Churubusco and in Bluffton, Ligonier, Montpelier and Hartford City. BRC also has a sales and engineering office near Detroit. Chuck was named Rubber Industry Executive of the Year in 2010. [Read citation] |
Ding-Jo Hsia ’75 Currie is a national education leader and one of the first Asian-American women to head a U.S. institution of higher education. Before retiring last year, Currie served as chancellor of the Coast Community College District in California, the nation's seventh-largest community college district. She has been a leading advocate of student learning, global workforce development, technology and leadership development, women's issues and international education. [Read citation] |
Sarah Kurtz '79 won the prestigious 2007 Dan David Prize, recognizing achievements that have an outstanding scientific, technological, cultural or social impact on the world. Sarah has been a principal scientist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory for more than two decades. Her prize-winning work focuses on reducing the cost of solar electricity and, according to the Dan David committee, has the potential to alleviate “the world’s impending energy crisis.” [Read citation] |
Ken Metzger '67 teamed with fellow grads Til ’47 and Dortha Martz ’47 King to organize the Friends of Manchester Golf Outing for more than 20 years. The outing has built camaraderie among alumni, cultivated friendships for the College and raised more than $1 million to support Spartan student-athletes. A four-term College trustee, Ken is a C.P.A. and the retired president and co-owner of Herbert E. Orr Co., Inc., an automotive industry supplier in Paulding, Ohio. [Read citation] |
Gary Montel '65 served Manchester for 24 years, first as director of development and public relations, then as director of alumni and church relations. While alumni director, Montel increased support for the University, guided the Alumni Association Board, and established Manchester’s international travel program for alumni. The University honored him with the Church-College Service Award and an Alumni Honor Award. [Read citation] |
