Lockdown drill on Wednesday, April 30. To test our
emergency communication and response systems, we will conduct a
brief campus drill on Wednesday, April 30. The drill will presume
that an armed intruder is on the mall, but we will not stage an
enactment. At some point between 2 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. on April 30,
the alert will go out … to our cell phones, our e-mails, office
phones and other ways:
“This is a drill … take cover as if an
armed intruder
were on the mall. This is a drill. This is
a test.”
The drill is scheduled deliberately during class
and meeting times. Begin your classes, meetings, etc. as planned.
The interruption will be brief.
For this drill to be
effective, we all must participate. While awaiting for the
all-clear, please talk with your students and colleagues about what
you would do if we indeed had an armed intruder on the mall or in
your building. Click
here for tips. Questions: Contact
Les Gahl
(safety/security), x5001.

Dial 6.
Instead of “9,” we’ll dial “6” to get an off-campus line, beginning
Monday, May 5. Why? to reduce the growing number of unintended 9-1-1
calls.

Have you seen our new billboard?

Jim Riley,
professor and chair of the Department of Education, leaves to attend
to family obligations, but remains in the area. Since Jim joined the
faculty in 2004, “He has brought great leadership to the department
and was instrumental in helping us network with Region 8 – the
school system of northeast Indiana – Ivy Tech and also in
spearheading our graduate program in education,” notes Dean
Sharfman.

Suzanne
Gindin,
assistant professor of music and conductor for the Manchester
Symphony Orchestra, will pursue new opportunities in teaching
and conducting, ending four years with the College. Dean Sharfman:
“She has made a number of improvements to the MSO and I know that
all of you who have seen her conduct will miss her enthusiasm and
the flair that she brought to the symphony and the symphonic band.”

Matt Davenport, who
leaves us at the end of the school year to become resident education
director at Washington State University. We thank Matt for his
commitment to the students of Schwalm, residential life and the
College over the past three years ... and for his ever-present grin.
Tim Reed
starts in fall as assistant professor of music, after he defends his
dissertation on music composition entitled “Three Dances for String
Orchestra” at the University of Florida. He has received numerous
composition awards.
Marjan
Boogert joins us in fall as assistant professor of
history, after defending her
dissertation examining life in 17th century Japan at Harvard
University. She has many academic interests and can teach a wide
range of courses in Asian History. She teaches at Furman University.
