News to know ...

Lockdown drill on Wednesday, April 30. To test our emergency communication and response systems, we will conduct a brief campus drill on Wednesday, April 30. The drill will presume that an armed intruder is on the mall, but we will not stage an enactment. At some point between 2 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. on April 30, the alert will go out … to our cell phones, our e-mails, office phones and other ways:

This is a drill … take cover as if an armed intruder

were on the mall. This is a drill. This is a test.”

The drill is scheduled deliberately during class and meeting times. Begin your classes, meetings, etc. as planned. The interruption will be brief. For this drill to be effective, we all must participate. While awaiting for the all-clear, please talk with your students and colleagues about what you would do if we indeed had an armed intruder on the mall or in your building. Click here for tips. Questions: Contact Les Gahl (safety/security), x5001.

Coming soon to a phone near you … Dial 6. Instead of “9,” we’ll dial “6” to get an off-campus line, beginning Monday, May 5. Why? to reduce the growing number of unintended 9-1-1 calls.

Have you seen our new billboard? Professor Leonard Williams’ smile no longer looms large on Indiana 13, south of town. Congrats to designer Dan Chudzynski, Jim Falkiner (innovation, advancement) and the Marketing Team on our new look. Click here to learn why the sign features fireworks.

Success Center Success! Since opening Sept. 1, almost 70 percent of our students have used the Success Center, making 5,292 visits. They’re taking advantage of  the health, counseling, career, academic support and writing services offered. Thanks to Sandy Bendsen, Betty Butterbaugh and Kelly Hippensteel, who track the visits.

Are you reporting your volunteer hours? Don’t be modest, these totals help promote the College and provide convincing data for grant applications. Faculty, staff, students … all are encouraged to report their volunteerism to the Office of Volunteer Services online, by e-mail or phone, x5084.

Transitions

Jim Riley, professor and chair of the Department of Education, leaves to attend to family obligations, but remains in the area. Since Jim joined the faculty in 2004, “He has brought great leadership to the department and was instrumental in helping us network with Region 8 – the school system of northeast Indiana – Ivy Tech and also in spearheading our graduate program in education,” notes Dean Sharfman.

Suzanne Gindin, assistant professor of music and conductor for the Manchester Symphony Orchestra, will pursue new opportunities in teaching and conducting, ending four years with the College. Dean Sharfman: “She has made a number of improvements to the MSO and I know that all of you who have seen her conduct will miss her enthusiasm and the flair that she brought to the symphony and the symphonic band.”

Matt Davenport, who leaves us at the end of the school year to become resident education director at Washington State University. We thank Matt for his commitment to the students of Schwalm, residential life and the College over the past three years ... and for his ever-present grin.

Tim Reed starts in fall as assistant professor of music, after he defends his dissertation on music composition entitled “Three Dances for String Orchestra” at the University of Florida. He has received numerous composition awards.

Marjan Boogert joins us in fall as assistant professor of history, after  defending her dissertation examining life in 17th century Japan at Harvard University. She has many academic interests and can teach a wide range of courses in Asian History. She teaches at Furman University.

Welcome! Cindy Klepper, Publications Assistant

Mark that calendar ...

Spartan Day is this Wednesday, April 23. High school students are invited to a special day tailored just for them at Manchester College later this month. Lots of faculty and staff pitch in on this important day ... THANKS! Here are the details

7 p.m. this Thursday ... the PERC. You'll want to grab a seat in the stands for the annual craziness between Accounting and Peace Studies on the basketball court. All part of Peace Week at Manchester College.

Faculty Development event: Assessing Student Learning, Friday, May 2. Panelists John Deal (economics), Janina Traxler (modern languages), Jim Brumbaugh-Smith (mathematics/computer science) and Mark Huntington (athletic training) will lead the discussion at 10 a.m., Hoff Room in the upper Union. RSVP by April 25 to Kim Meyer (academic affairs).

Former Fort Wayne Mayor Graham Richard will discuss “Innovation in Government” at 2 p.m. this Wednesday, April 23 for Innovation Coffee House in The Café of the College Union. The class, led by Jim Falkiner, is open to the public and all of us. We expect Richard will bring along a guest, Council Member Glynn Hines ’73.

Science Center parking lot closed Friday, April 25, from 3 a.m. to 11 p.m. to accommodate the Relay for Life fund-raiser and a drunk-driving awareness program.

No MCConnect on Monday, April 28 while ITS works on the Gateway portal. We may find it operational from time to time but don’t get too attached to it, as it could quickly disappear.

Our Yom HaShoah service will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 5, in Petersime Chapel. Rabbi Marla Spanjer of Congregation Achduth Vesholom in Fort Wayne will help MC with this service honoring those who died in the Holocaust, and for hearing the stories of those who survived.

Visit the Art Institute of Chicago with alumni, friends and Jim & Thelma on Wednesday, April 30. Room remains on the bus to see exhibits of the works of Edward Hopper and Winslow Homer, with Jim Adams and Thelma Rohrer as your guides. Or just spend the day sightseeing and shopping. Click on the links to preview the Hopper and Homer exhibits. Contact the Alumni Office, x5223.

Oak Leaves has a new look! It’s much cleaner and more professional-looking, thanks to Heather Van Puffelen’s (web assistant) talent and hard work. A bogus IRS alert is showing up in some mailboxes. Do not click on the “Economic Stimulus Refund” link in the message. It’s yet another attempt to steal our money and our identities.  Delete.
