Retention … that’s a New Year’s resolution we intend to keep. It appears we’re on the right track, with 91 percent of our first-year students returning for more Manchester! (86.4 percent last year.) It’s a great class, engaged in all MC has to offer, and excited for more. We’re all part of that success, and there’s still time to encourage a few more students to stay with us. Here are some conversation starters for all of us:

ü       Welcome back!

ü       How was break?

ü       We’re so glad you’re here!

Jolane Rohr: If we could figure out how to put her name up in lights on this page, we’d do it in a flash. Our Queen of All Things Enrollment is leaving us to lead Indiana University/Kokomo admissions and financial aid. We will sorely miss her on so many levels. Jolane is serving her 15th year. Notes Dave McFadden: “I am deeply grateful for Jolane’s many contributions to the life and success of the College.” The last day for us to wish her well in person is Jan. 26. As we seek a new director, admissions and enrollment consultant John White of North Carolina will serve as interim, at least through May.

Farewell, v2: Wendi Hutchinson (church relations), you will recall, is getting hitched this spring and has been job seeking down Lafayette way. Well, guess what!!! She has a way cool new job as director of alumni relations and special events for the College of Consumer and Family Sciences at Purdue University. Congratulations, Wendi! Last chance to wish her well and sob into our hankies is Jan. 12.

Back to the Future, the Manchester way … Those unaware that we power some of our mowers, and other equipment with biodiesel made right here on campus with a chemistry experiment equipped and supplied by Chartwells, might want to check out our home page.

Three days of programming will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. at the College and the High School. The community/College MLK program on Jan.12 features the Rev. Dr. Dwight N. Hopkins of The University of Chicago Divinity School and senior editor of the Henry McNeil Turner/Sojourner Truth Series in Black Religion. More (and a surprise unveiling) coming soon, but here are the basics:

Thursday, Jan. 11

3:30 p.m. – Faculty and Staff Workshop: “Your role in diversity at Manchester College,” SC 102

6 p.m. – Students talk with Dr. Hopkins: “Exploring your full potential: What does it take?” Intercultural Center

Friday, Jan. 12

12:30 p.m. – Presentation by Dr. Hopkins, Manchester High School

7 p.m. – Service of Remembrance and Celebration in Honor of Martin Luther King, with Dr. Dwight Hopkins, Wampler Auditorium

Monday, Jan. 15

7 p.m. – Interfaith Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr., with Tim McElwee (peace studies), John Planer (music) and Mike Brown (peace studies), Petersime Chapel

Not apparently while you are reading this, but it is possible our internet service will be interrupted today, and Wednesday (Jan. 2-3), reports our guru of all things info techie, Michael Case.

Take a moment to “read” this coverlet that Coach Brad Yoder received from his runners. He’s already snuggled under it at home, but he’s also quite warmed by the thoughtfulness: “I'm still somewhat overwhelmed by, and absorbed by, the gratitude, the thoughtfulness, and the generosity of our cross country students. It is such a privilege to be a part of their lives, and to have them as part of mine.” We're pretty pleased you're here, too, Brad!

It’s that time again, to encourage students to present their papers, original research, creative performance or work for the Dean’s Student Scholarship Symposium. The ninth symposium of two dozen of Manchester’s finest is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. on March 9 in various venues on campus. Kim Meyer in Academic Affairs has details. Here are some important dates:

Feb. 12 – Student abstracts, resumes, with mentor signatures due

Feb. 16 – Notification of selected presenters

March 5 – Copies of full paper due (noon)

It’s MC style. We already know Wampler was full to the brim for the International Fashion Show on Dec. 1, but now that all donations are collected for the AIDS Task Force of Fort Wayne, Jackie Nagila (multicultural services) reports a tally of $230, and four boxes of canned goods.

What's going on here? Ask Jena Oke (art) about the series of murals she is painting on the east wall of the current dining room to help students prepare for their move after spring break to our new dining commons downstairs in the College Union. She's spent our holiday break creating the scenes.

Primo parking goes to these six generous contributors to The Manchester Fund during January. A tip of the hat to: Jack Gochenaur (business, etc.), Maria Herrera (admissions), Deb Hustin (ITS), Marcia Hicks (custodial), Gary Montel (alumni office) and Susie Sharfman (college advancement). All are donating directly to The Manchester Fund through payroll contribution. To get in on the drawing for February, see Rita Schroll in College Advancement about how you can help increase our faculty and staff participation in The Manchester Fund. All names stay in the hat all year, until drawn.

Welcome newbies! Katharine Gray Brown, Assistant Professor of Philosophy

The buzz on campus: Will the new annual Trustees’ Holiday Celebration become a tradition? Weather, of course, cooperated with the village of volunteers to make the progressive event that truly celebrated the Manchester College campus a huge success. We wonder if Dean Sharfman got all the IT goodies he requested from Santa …

June Wolfe ’40 won Jo’s special apple and apricot chutney and French brie cheese over the holidays as one of the winners of the drawings at the Trustees’ Christmas Party. Laura Shah ’00 (who accompanied her grandmother Nadine Bowman ’48x) won the $25 gift certificate to the Campus Store.

Thanks to the Holiday Celebration Committee and all who pitched in to host stations, decorate, sing, serve, ho ho, perform, and delightfully entertain us with an engaging new party. The committee: Jack Gochenaur, Jenny Birner, Terri Jones, Susie Sharfman, Dave Friermood, Chris Garber, Kathryn Heler, Rachel Richey, Shanon Green and Paula Finton. And those who stepped up in so many ways: Tim and Janet McElwee, Jen Lutz, Marcie and Rusty Coulter-Kern, Stuart Jones, Sandy Bendsen,

Julie Garber, Lisa and Merrill Templin, Linda and Todd Richards, Kelsey Swanson, Amanda Myers-Walls, Michael Case (dashing in his red suit), Glenn and Susie Sharfman, Sonia Smith, Anna Grady, Lila Hammer, Jill Lichtsinn, Matt Unger and Sage Plakosh, Jennifer Reichenbach (harpist),  Diane Scheerer (pianist),  Gwen Mize and Earl McKinley (storytellers), and, deliciously, the Chartwells team. And the elves, the elves! Elves Alex, Andy and Hannah Sharfman, and Elizabeth and Lucas Schilling.

Need an “adjustment?” SOC presents: Manchester Chiropractic for the staff lunch program at noon on Wednesday, Jan 10. Bring your lunch and co-workers to the Oakwood great room for the lesson. Give Allison Keating a heads-up so we have enough chairs, x5432.

“I got (fill in the blank) for my service to Manchester College” … MC staff members will have the opportunity to select their own service gift, ranging from a Campus Store gift certificate, an MC gift item, or from a catalog of items from Awards Network. The change follows a staff survey. HR will handle the details. “SOC would like to thank Cabinet, the Office of Human Resources, and the Staff Recognition Committee for their work and collaboration in bringing this new policy to fruition,” notes Adam Hohman, chair of the Staff Organizational Committee.

It is with heart-felt appreciation that I extend a sincere and humble "thank you" to each and every one of you for the generous and overwhelming outpouring of concern, love, prayers and support during the recent and untimely death of my oldest brother, Steve. Your many emails, cards, telephone calls, visits to our home and the funeral home, along with gifts of food and flowers has truly demonstrated how much Manchester College is a compassionate, caring family that ministers to its own during difficult times. Your thoughtfulness has truly touched me in ways that I cannot adequately express, but in ways that have left an indelible impression on my heart.     – Stuart, Terri, Daniel, Derek, and the entire Jones Family

MC's weekly update by Doug Shoemaker, sports information director

Oldies but still goodies ...  NOBODY correctly identified the June 1977 photo of Ken Brown chatting with curly Dick Harshbarger and Bob Dell. So, having failed with contests, let’s just giggle at this one, from the 1981 Aurora, of lots of familiar faces:

Front Row: Noah Shively, Doug Campbell, Wayne Ross, Emma Mooney, Conrad Snavely, Dave Good,

Roger Shively and Paul Shrider. Back Row: Keith Immel, Wayne Metzger, Gary Heckman, Paul L. Shrider,

Lamoin Montel, Gene Rhoades and Vernon Mitmoen.

Oldies but still goodies from recent MEMOs

Mark your calendars! for the all-staff meetings, when we’ll recognize service, learn what's going on, do a Q&A with President Switzer and chuckle a bit, although not necessarily in that order. All of the 45-minute meetings start promptly at 8 a.m., with coffee and sweets the half-hour beforehand to give us a chance to chat up folks from other parts of campus we rarely see.

                               Wednesday, Jan. 17

                               Thursday, March 22 (spring break)

                               Thursday, June 28

                               Thursday, Oct. 18 (fall break)
