Well, they’re off, most of them, to destinations far away … France, Spain, New York City, London, Ghana, Mexico, New Zealand. Three departures are on deck: to Italy and Hawaii tomorrow and to D.C. on Sunday. Meanwhile, 45 classes, practicums, internships continue back home in Indiana, from environmental law to accounting to the Christian faith. (Here’s the schedule.)

As part of our Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr., we're all invited to a workshop this Thursday, Jan. 11, “Your Role in Diversity at Manchester College.” Facilitating the session, which starts at 3:30 p.m. in Room 102 of the Science Center, is Dr. Dwight Hopkins, theology professor at University Of Chicago Divinity School. Don’t forget to get your supervisor’s approval to attend.

Click Here for the schedule of Martin Luther King Jr. activities on campus and in town. Watch for one more very special magnificently Manchester MLK celebration coming up early in spring semester.

EzLabor is still struggling with translating our paid time off to our pay stubs. Human Resources urges us to be patient, and soon we all will have this convenient way to tell how much vacation, etc. we have left to use at our fingertips. Meanwhile, some pay stubs are correct; some are not.

Get exercise indoors … hike up to the third floor of Winger (up one set of stairs and down the other for the full effect) and stroll down the hall … to spot all kinds of interesting art, like this wire portrait by senior Amanda Nordmann. The north stairwell even has a tree!

Want to buy lots of something? Need to do price comparisons, file a credit application with a new vendor, see if we can buy something cheaper … ask the Purchasing Office! This new office, led by Quentin Moudy in the garden level of the Ad Building (Room 9), stands ready to free us from the challenges of purchasing, and, of course, to get our purchase orders. x5267.

Welcome! John W. White, Director of Admissions

Duplex printing … For those of us challenged in office machines, that means (among many other things) printing on both sides of the paper, like in a booklet. It saves lots of paper and money. Instructions are at SpartanPrint and below. Contact the ITS Helpdesk, x5454 or SpartanPrint@manchester.edu with questions about printing on campus, but you might want to check out the SpartanPrint website first … it’s got tons of “stuff.” How to print on both sides, instructions may vary by printer, but basically, find the “Duplex” box:

  • From the “File” menu, select “Print”

  • In the print window that appears, click the “Properties” button in the upper right-hand corner.

  • In the new window, click on the “Layout” tab.

  • The middle section is for Duplex printing. Click on “Flip on Long Edge

  • Click “OK” to submit your print job to the SpartanPrint queue.

Planning events that belong on the web campus calendar? Please send them to the MEMO Lady as soon as you set the date and she’ll get them posted! (Tell her about errors, too!)

Barb says Hi! Barb Ehrhardt, retired Koinonia director and biology instructor, sends greetings: “Thank you so much for another wonderful MEMO. I so appreciate this way of keeping in touch with the continuing successes of Manchester College. Even more, I continue to be warmed by our sense of caring and love for those who serve at the College. It is, after all, the most sincere and visible expression of who we are. Thank you, and a very Happy New Year to all!”

Puzzler pro Leonard Williams will be published yet again on Sunday, Jan. 14 by the Los Angeles Times Syndicate. Local readers will find the political science professor’s latest crossword puzzle in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.

The Manchester Investment Club will have its monthly meeting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24 in the College Union. There will be money to spend. Note change of date. Prospective staff and faculty members are welcome.  – Richard Harshbarger, Treasurer

About our TIAA-Cref balances on our paystubs … those may be wrong, too, as TIAA-Cref struggles with information tech system changes. They apparently, are getting close, or closer, to resolving acceptance of our deposits from the College. When resolved, TIAA-Cref will backdate the deposits and the College will urge them to send us an updated quarterly statement.

Take me to Spartan Weekly!

Oldies but still goodies ...  Here’s another chuckle from the 1981 Aurora, then we’ll move on, we promise! These folks rode our Admissons efforts back then … hee haw!

Retention … that’s a New Year’s resolution we intend to keep. It appears we’re on the right track, with 91 percent of our first-year students returning for more Manchester! (86.4 percent last year.) It’s a great class, engaged in all MC has to offer, and excited for more. We’re all part of that success, and there’s still time to encourage a few more students to stay with us. Here are some conversation starters for all of us:

ü       Welcome back!
