News to know ...

What if weather forces us to cancel classes, or worse? As long as students reside on campus, we never will “close” campus, of course. But, if the weather indeed has impacted operation of the College, we will send out an all-campus e-mail and put the news on our home page, www.manchester.edu.

AND, we will alert area radio and TV stations

TV: Channel 21 (Indiana’s NewsCenter), WANE-TV Channel 15 and Fox Channel 55 in Fort Wayne; and WNDU TV Channel 16 in South Bend

Radio: NIPR on WBOI/WBNI, WAJI 95.1, WLDE 101.7, WOWO 1190 in Fort Wayne; WLZQ (Q101) in Warsaw; WKUZ 95.9 in Wabash

Identity theft e-mail alert. The message claims an old friend has sent us neat screen saver. Don’t bite. “Please be aware that if you receive an email such as this or with an attachment ending in .SCR, do not trust it at all. Accepting a screen saver will likely cause your machine to be infected and could lead to the theft of your identity,” warns our ITS leader Michael  Case. Do not click on the link to read the entire message from your “friend.” Do not go to the “freeze” website mentioned in the message. Delete. Delete.

Need to request painting, plumbing, athletic field work, vehicle maintenance? Place work orders/requests online. Or click on the link at the top of this MEMO. Or, find the necessary request paperwork on your computer’s U: Drive. Here’s the path:

Computer → Win95Apps (\\Apollo) (U:) → Workorders

Authorization forms for office moves are on the U Drive, too, in the Forms folder.

It’s staff performance evaluation time. Forms are here, or click on Supervisor Resources on the Human Resources website. Remember that this annual process includes a review (and modifications, if needed) of the position description, which should be forwarded electronically to Carrie Makin. Evaluations are due Feb. 8. Questions? Dale Carpenter, x5393.

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels praises Manchester for its new Fast Forward program. Here’s an excerpt of his recent letter to President Switzer:

“At a time when colleges are measuring themselves on their six-year graduation rates, I am especially pleased that Manchester has introduced this innovative program giving students the opportunity to graduate in three years … I applaud your program and hope it is successful.”

Transitions ...

Welcome! Mia L. Miller, Instructor of Religion and Philosophy; M. Marie Sarber, Student Financial Services Coordinator

Looking for the Public Relations office … or the MEMO Lady? They’ve moved upstairs, into 115, just outside Admissions in the Administration Building. Yes, she is quite pleased with her room with a view of the fountain. The PR intern also moved upstairs.

Fiery activist, compassionate teacher, black historian … that’s our keynote Martin Luther King remembrance and celebration presenter, Dr. Reiland Rabaka. The main event begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18 as Rabaka presents “A Drum Major for Justice: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Message and It’s Special Meaning for the 21st Century.” The Union Baptist Church Choir also will perform for the event in the College Union. The night before, in the Oakwood Hall great room, Rabaka will challenge students to learn black history, presenting “Hip-Hop vs. Hip-Pop.” Watch our home page for details to come.

We’ll celebrate the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech at MC on Feb. 1. The commemoration convocation begins at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 1 in Cordier. Expect to hear lots of memories from the podium the civil rights leader used in 1968, and wonderful music. We’ll also see clips from his speech, and hear his words through MC student voices. Details to come.

The January Staff Luncheon brings us a guided tour of Gallery G, led by Jenna Oke (art). Bring your lunch, bring a co-worker to the Wednesday, Jan. 16 one-hour session that begins at noon in the Speicher Room, upstairs in the College Union. Click here for a story about the latest exhibit.     →

All-Staff Meeting is Thursday, Jan. 17 in Wine Recital Hall. We’ll begin with eats and greets at 7:30 a.m., with an 8 a.m. start on the one-hour meeting.

Here’s the All-Staff Meeting schedule, please mark your calendars. All begin at 8 a.m. sharp, following a 7:30 meet and eat. All fall on a Thursday. The next meeting is soon, in Wine Recital Hall.

Wow!   Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

It was New Years Eve day, and water was leaking into Mary Chrastil’s office in College Advancement, in the garden level of the Administration Building. Custodians Laura Badgett and Amy Buzzard spotted the drip (onto Mary’s laptop workstation) and alerted Gary Heckman (electrician), who zipped over and contained the damage. ITS quickly substituted the laptop to get Mary back in business. Now THAT’s teamwork, especially on a busy pre-holiday schedule.

“Thanks to John Straub (printing services) for his quick response to my large printing order for course packets. As usual, I did not give him much lead time ... He went far and above to see that I received all of my order in time for the start of January classes. I could not have received this kind of service with an off-campus print shop! – Nancie Meyer and the Campus Store staff

(The packet had several hundred pages.)
