News to know...

Ninety percent of our students are enrolled in January Session, about 100 more than last January. More than 11 percent are traveling off campus … all the way to China, England, Italy, the Czech Republic, Nicaragua and Hawaii and as close as Jamaica and Washington, D.C. Students in two classes, Gary Zimmerman (Multicultural Psychology), and Leonard Williams (American Politics), will focus on President-Elect Obama. Leonard’s students are studying transitional politics (with inauguration tickets!) and Gary’s will visit Obama’s neighborhoods in Hawaii. That's Gary Heckman (electrician) taking group photos in London last time. At right is the 3 a.m. departure from South Bend of the Medical Practicum to Nicaragua.

400! That’s how many young students are expected for the second annual Manchester College Science Olympiad Invitational this Saturday, Jan. 17. Engaging in the science and math competition will be teams from the area, as well as South Bend, Hammond and Bloomington. What a great collaboration between our education and science educators. In the words of coordinator Heather Schilling (education), “It’s BIG!!!!”

All-Staff Meeting next week, Thursday, Jan. 22. We gather for chatter and coffee (no snacks, to cut expenses) at 7:30 a.m., with the meeting starting promptly at 8 a.m. in Wine Recital Hall. Attendance required. Agenda includes the new Core curriculum, facilities and land use planning, EPA self-audit and the impact of the current economic situation on the College. And, of course, we will celebrate service, especially …

Notable...

375 class goal

2,423 applications (Record!)

825 MC student-to-prospective student phone calls

We have exceeded last year’s record application total. We now have 2,423 applications, compared to last year’s total of 2,389. With many more weeks to receive applications, who knows how high we will go this year! Our goal is 2,700. Congratulations to each and every one who works so hard to drive applications and input them into Datatel.

National kudos for College Union design. MSKTD & Associates Inc. received an “Outstanding Design – Renovation/Modernization” award from American School and University magazine for its architecture of our College Union. The company is profiled in the November issue of Architectural Portfolio.

Tutoring II. Send suggestions for tutoring for Spring Semester classes to the Success Center by Jan. 23. Contact Sandy Bendsen, x5888.

MC and our families. Admissions wants the opportunity to recruit our high school-aged relatives to Manchester College, but they need to know about us! Sons, daughters, grandchildren, nieces, nephews … Please tell Admissions about them so we can begin connecting them with all that is Manchester beginning in their junior year of high school. Don’t assume the College has them on its contact list; make sure by submitting their information here.

January Session. That’s the proper name for this incredible month we are experiencing. Not Jan Term. Not J-Term. Please help spread the word, by not using the aforementioned unmentionables, even in casual conversation, and especially not in written communications.

All ANGEL student roster updates are complete for January 2009. Teachers are now responsible for making any changes to ANGEL rosters. Student rosters for Spring Semester are now in place, with the next update scheduled for Jan. 30. Questions: AngelHelp@manchester.edu

Weather and work. We’ve already tested the icy waters of winter, but some reminders: We’ll tell local media if we need to cancel classes or close College offices. Generally, because we are a residential campus, assume campus is “open.” Campus closing media list:

Indiana’s NewsCenter (TV 21 Fort Wayne)
WANE-TV (TV 15 Fort Wayne)
Northeast Indiana Public Radio, WBOI 89.1 (Fort Wayne)
WAJI 95.1, WLDE 101.7 and Fox TV 55 (Fort Wayne)
WOWO 1190 (Fort Wayne)
Q101 101.1 (Warsaw)
WKUZ 95.9 (Wabash)
WNDU South Bend (TV 16)

Quotable MC. The January issue of Currents magazine from CASE (Council of Advancement for Schools and Education) quotes Jay Nussel (college advancement) in its cover story, “Staying Up in a Down Economy.”

Electroacoustics (i-lek'tro-ah-koo'stiks). The science that deals with the interaction or interconversion of electric and acoustic phenomena. Tim Reed (music) is defining this kind of music at MC. One of his compositions, A Nonfunctional Teapot, has been selected for performance at the Ball State University Festival of New Music on Jan. 31. Bravo! Here’s Tim’s website, with his music.

More “press” for Manchester. When one of the nation’s premier consultants to higher education, Jerold Panas, wrote The First 120 Days, What a New College President Must Do to Succeed, he turned to our president for endorsement of his book. Jo’s comments appear on the inside front cover.

Tech...
Here’s a stewardship tip from Larry the Phone Guy: Dialing information 411 or 555-1212 costs $1.50 per use. On our ITS website are easy-to-use web directories for locating people, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, businesses, maps, reverse phone directories and websites. Web Directories: http://its/systems/phones/quick_ref_guide.aspx

Calling overseas? As our students and faculty head hither and yon for January Session, this seems a good time to remind folks how to make an international call. Just dial the full number as we do for a regular call, then press # to signal the system that we have completed entering all the numbers. Thanks Larry the Telephone Guy for the tip! As always, hook up with the HelpDesk x5454 for answers to questions.

Human Resources...

Faculty and Staff Openings: Assistant Professor of Biology, Assistant Professor of Economics, Adjunct Instructor of Applied Voice, Assistant Professor of Religion, Assistant Professor or Instructor of Mathematics/Mathematics Education, Assistant Professor of Music, Marketing Graphic Designer/Writer

Go to job descriptions.

Oldies but goodies from past MEMOs..

Bring your own lunch; Hoff-Lahman rooms in upper Union. For MC employees, students, police, professionals and anybody in the community we’d like to invite.

This is no time for modesty. For most members of the Manchester College community, service and volunteerism is an easy habit. Please take a minute to visit the ”Report Hours” web form of the Office of Volunteer Services to perform yet another important service to the College. OVS tallies up all of our hours for use in seeking grants and other philanthropy for our programs and projects. It just takes a minute … tally up!
