News to know ...

We have more than two dozen weeks left to recruit our next class, yet already we have exceeded our stretch goals. The final goal is 2,000 applications, and 1,400 admits. Check out the box at the left. The ultimate proof: the stretch goal of an incoming class of 360. That’s the pudding. The applications and admits totals are the foundation! Cheers and high-fives to our enrollment team, our coaches, faculty and all who go that extra mile for the Class of 2012!

Do your callers get an odd message? Many (especially faculty) have not personalized their voice mail message. A cheerful, helpful message is a simple way to contribute to our mission, and tells callers they have reached the correct number. It only takes a moment!

MC student writing skills: What should we expect? What do you expect? Should graduates be able to …. write a thesis, an excellent resume and cover letter, a poem, in citation format? What should the College do to make this happen? Our Writing Center director, Tamara O’Hearn, wants to hear your opinions.

The mileage rate now is 45 cents/mile for employee-owned vehicles driven for the College’s business. Departmental budgets will reflect the nickel increase, effective Jan. 1.

We still have flu vaccines for those concerned about a recent Centers for Disease Control report of outbreaks in 11 states. Indiana is not on the list, yet, reports Tara Vogel (health services), x5306. The CDC recommends we get the shot.

A number of grants are available, with March 3 deadlines for proposals for faculty (and side-by-side work with students). Here are a few; check with the Office of Academic Affairs for details and other opportunities; Kim Meyer is the contact for most, unless otherwise noted.

          Faculty-Student Summer Research Grants

Peace Studies/Conflict Resolution/Secrist Funds (Tim McElwee)

          Faculty Research and Artistic Endeavor

Lilly Endowment Plowshares Grant, due March 3 (Tim McElwee)

          E-Learning grants

Transitions ...

We have a new administrative assistant in the Office of Academic Affairs, Linda Miller, who is on the job 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Michael Good now is the Music Department assistant.

Jennifer (Jenny) Simmers will join the faculty next fall as assistant professor of accounting and business, filling the position held by Jan Fahs. A ’94 MC graduate, she holds an MBA from Indiana University, has taught accounting in a variety of settings and worked for Lincoln National Corp.

Welcome to the MC community! Laura Badgett and Amy K. Buzzard, Custodians

Still have an old phone? ITS is collecting the relics; contact HelpDesk, x5454.

Mark that calendar

The Pirates of Penzance likely will bring a number of faculty and staff to the stage and orchestra pit for its spring run May 2-4. Auditions for the light opera are tonight and Wednesday, Feb. 5-6; read about it here. Packets available in Funderburg and the town library. More: Debra Lynn, x5296.

Countdown to Commencement begins at 5:30 p.m. this Thursday, Feb. 7 in the Lahman Room of the College Union. This is when faculty and cabinet “wait” on the Class of 2008.

With Lent comes a series of six conversations called "Encounter," from the Gospel of Luke, in Petersime Chapel. Let Campus Pastor Steve Crain, x5243 know if you are interested. The one-hour discussions begin Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m., if we have enough interest.

Spring Bible study and worship … Faculty and staff are invited to a planning and fellowship gathering at noon Thursday, Feb. 7 in the Petersime lounge. The goal: programming convenient for staff and faculty. Questions: Steve Crain, x5243

MC and the Caucuses … that’s the topic of the next SOC* lunch at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 13 in the Speicher Room of the College Union. Professor Leonard Williams and his class will invigorate us with their reports on their January Session at the Iowa caucuses. Here’s a hint. And, here’s a link to some of the coverage, in The Indianapolis Star, the Richmond Palladium Item and the Frankfort Times. Bring your lunch. That's Jennifer Schoenle just above Clinton's head   →

Notable

College Republicans seek an advisor. Two students have taken the lead in seeking to organize a nationally recognized chapter at MC, but they need an advisor. They already have a constitution. Interested? Contact Katie Garrett or Andrew Keber.

The Fort Wayne Teaching Conference is this Friday, with lots of MC attendees and four presenters. Dean Sharfman will deliver the welcome at 8:45 a.m. in Walb Union at IPFW. Mary Lahman (communication studies) and Leonard Williams (political science) will discuss “Using Online Discussion to Build Critical Thinking Skills” and “Building Critical Thinking Skills in Students with Mild Disabilities.” Tamara O’Hearn (writing center) will moderate a panel on “Great Expectations: Connection between Critical Thinking and Teaching Writing Across Disciplines.”

Manchester in German press. Manchester College was the subject of a feature in the Jan. 4 issue of Badische Zeitung newspaper, thanks to the sabbatical writing of Beate Gilliar. Those who can’t read German still can note that Manchester College stands out, with a color photo. Here's a link to the page; scroll down for the story. Beate’s story tells of our peace studies program and other highlights; here's the English version.

Congratulations to Chris Garber, new president of the North Manchester Town Council, and to junior political science major Brittany Gick, who will serve on the North Manchester Traffic Commission.

Know an outstanding senior? One who has contributed significantly to the quality of campus life? Nominate her/him for the Capstone Outstanding Senior Leadership Award. Faculty and staff are encouraged to send letters of nomination to the Award Selection Committee, c/o Dottie Young (student development). Nominations due Feb. 15.

Florida alumni meet MC students. While we were chilling in North Manchester, Alumni Director Gary Montel and five students flew south to chat with Florida alumni in Orlando, Tampa, Sebring and Fort Myers. Pictured, from left: Andrea Graft, Melissa Bower, Gary, Wendi Moon, Kyle Watson and Holly DeNeve. They wowed alumni with their January Session experiences and plans.

Thank you to all, of Physical Plant, Staff and Faculty, for all your thoughts, prayers, floral tributes and support in the recent death of my dad, Russell W Ferguson. It’s great to have support from co-workers who really care!    – Sue Lewis and all of the Russell Ferguson family

Wow!   Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

Praise to all who helped us commemorate the 40th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s. The event last Friday in itself built more memories. Eventually, we will have a Jim Adams- crafted DVD of the program available for checkout in Funderburg Library. (As usual, voice-only recordings of VIA events also are available for checkout.) To see the Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette’s Page 1 coverage, including a massive photo of student speakers Samantha Johnson and Jerome Bostic, click here. It took a village of technical, logistical and creative skills, but thanks especially to:

Dave McFadden and Jeri Kornegay for bringing it all together

Jim Adams for hours and hours and hours creating the video clips of King’s speech

The three who stepped up to the microphone at the last minute to fill in for two very disappointed speakers and a soloist blizzard-bound in Indianapolis: Jackie Nagila, Rob Gratz and first-year singer Najah Monroe.

Ken Brown for reminding us we must give peace a chance. We soon will post his speech on our website.

Oldies but goodies from recent MEMOs ...

What if weather forces us to cancel classes, or worse? As long as students reside on campus, we never will “close” campus, of course. But, if the weather indeed has impacted operation of the College, we will send out an all-campus e-mail and put the news on our home page, www.manchester.edu.

AND, we will alert area radio and TV stations

TV: Channel 21 (Indiana’s NewsCenter), WANE-TV Channel 15 and Fox Channel 55 in Fort Wayne; and WNDU TV Channel 16 in South Bend

Radio: NIPR on WBOI/WBNI, WAJI 95.1, WLDE 101.7, WOWO 1190 in Fort Wayne; WLZQ (Q101) in Warsaw; WKUZ 95.9 in Wabash
