News to know ...

Master recruiters. Kim Duchane (exercise, sport sciences), Jerry Sweeten (biology) and Vicki Eastman (education) … were rather surprised to learn last Friday that they are recipients of our Faculty Ambassador award for their stupendous student recruitment efforts. Praised President Switzer: “Your spirit of student-focused generosity with your time is a model for all faculty. … I applaud your spirit of service in support of these important – these ESSENTIAL – recruitment initiatives.”

The next three convocations are in the College Union. These 10 a.m. Monday convocations will move to the Lahman and Hoff conference rooms of the upper Union:

March 3 – Leonard Williams (political) and Brad Pyrah (business/accounting) will debate the intent of the 2nd Amendment, which declares a well-regulated militia as "necessary to the security of a free State" and prohibits infringement of "the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

March 10 – Political activist, poet, hip-hop historian Kevin Powell, author of Someday We’ll All Be Free, inspired by Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 presidential election and September 11th

March 24 – Prolific conservative writer Dinesh D'Souza, called one of the "top young public-policy makers in the country" by Investor’s Business Daily.

Manchester is hosting juried student art from northeast Indiana colleges and universities. Seven MC students have work on display in Gallery G for this consortium project. Here’s a link to the story, or go to our home page. See related Kudos below! Below is Dean Sharfman checking out the oil painting that won the show.

Gallery G has new public hours. During spring semester, when classes are in session, the art gallery in the upper Union is open to the public 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 3 p.m. on Sundays.

Refer struggling students through the SuccessNet website and not via e-mail, please. Here’s the link, or find it on the Faculty and Staff homepage. Using the website helps ensure your key role in the heads-up process gets the quickest response.

Tuesdays with Tara, and other health-conscious colleagues interested in keeping a Food Journal. Did you know that keeping a food journal for at least three months qualifies for staff wellness points? Did you know that people who keep food journals lose more weight and keep more weight off in the long run? Every Tuesday, noon to 1 p.m. in the large conference room of Calvin Ulrey. Just show up, with a journal and your lunch (if you want). Questions? x5306.

Spring brings three Church of the Brethren guests to Petersime Chapel. Each also is available for classroom visits and conversations. Contact is Campus Pastor Steve Crain.

Notable ...

MC quoted. Janet McElwee’s comments on how Manchester helps students create personal statements for employment appeared in the latest issue of the NACE Journal of the National Association of Colleges and Employers for career services professionals.

How’s this for a SUCCESS center story? One of our students told Bonnie O’Connell: You know I thought I would only have to talk with the professor for about 10 minutes but we started talking and we talked for almost an hour. It was great! She was really interested in getting to know me and in helping me. I learned some things about her too.”

Are you an author? Writing Center Director Tamara O’Hearn is compiling a bibliography of faculty and staff writings, from cookbooks and children’s books to anthologies, journals and histories that are available for purchase at bookstores, Amazon.com, our Campus Store, etc. Self-published authors, too. Deadline is March 1.

Religion and Science Discussion Group. Once again, faculty and staff are meeting for conversation about issues at the interdisciplinary interface between religion and science. (This counts as professional development for faculty.) To be included in the e-mail notification/planning, contact Campus Pastor Steve Crain.

The Vagina Monologues raised $360 from its full-house performance Feb. 16 to raise awareness about violence against women and girls. Beneficiaries are the Hands of Hope shelter for abused women and children and the Women of New Orleans. About 30 women took the stage for the readings.

Wow!   Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

Thanks to Marcia Hicks, Laura Badgett, Gary Heckman and Elbert Sammons for their quick response when we had an entire suite of ill students. The crew checked it out mold concerns, including looking at duct work and replacing a ceiling tile. However, they did not stop there! They cleaned the students’ bathroom and swept carpet in the entry. They wanted to help the students out because they were too ill to clean the area themselves. – Tara Vogel (health services)

Chris Schott (ITS) ... has gone out of his way to help me understand the challenges, solve my problems and give me advice on how to handle issues that may arise in the future,” praises Jackie Nagila (multicultural services). “He is patient (I do ask a lot of questions) and exhibits excellent customer service. I feel very comfortable calling on him at any time because I am confident that I will be treated with respect and he will provide me with the best service possible.”

Kudos to Ralph Lovett (PERC custodian). Hanover’s head men’s basketball coach told President Switzer on Saturday that “whoever is the custodian for this building does a fantastic job. It’s one of the cleanest buildings we play in – and that includes the locker room! Please share my compliments with the custodian.”

Kudos to Thelma Rohrer for bringing regional attention to the fine arts. Her leadership in getting the northeast Indiana college and university student art competition to our Gallery G for exhibition brought the awards ceremony here also. More than 60 student artists, faculty and families were at the gallery last Saturday, and they were most impressed! The live music (David Huppe) was a great touch. Thanks also to Jena Oke and Jim Adams for their hard work on this project and their on-going support!

Oldies but goodies from recent MEMOs ...

Those snow stranded on campus may want to take advantage of free, emergency housing available in East and Schwalm halls. The guest rooms are available for weather emergencies only, first-come, first-serve. Contact Conference Services (x5551) during the work week or Security (x5999) after hours.

What if weather forces us to cancel classes, or worse? As long as students reside on campus, we never will “close” campus, of course. But, if the weather indeed has impacted operation of the College, we will send out an all-campus e-mail and put the news on our home page, www.manchester.edu.

AND, we will alert area radio and TV stations

TV: Channel 21 (Indiana’s NewsCenter), WANE-TV Channel 15 and Fox Channel 55 in Fort Wayne; and WNDU TV Channel 16 in South Bend

Radio: NIPR on WBOI/WBNI, WAJI 95.1, WLDE 101.7, WOWO 1190 in Fort Wayne; WLZQ (Q101) in Warsaw; WKUZ 95.9 in Wabash

Personal development … Please keep the MEMO Lady in the loop when you and/or your department “do” professional development .. seminars, workshops, conferences, meetings, retreats, video conferences, etc. Don’t be shy! Just zip her an e-mail! Here are some examples:
