Off to Massachusetts is Kathryn Carlson Heler (accounting/business) at the end of the academic year to accept a position at Springfield College as associate professor in not-for-profit business studies. She will teach nonprofit management and marketing and in 2008 will assume the directorship of the MBA program or the Nonprofit Center.  Husband, Ed,  will be an adjunct professor for the college.  Kathryn has taught at Manchester since 1997.

Difficult Dialogues, our Discussion Days promises a full schedule of interesting topics and presenters, beginning Monday with convo and a 4 p.m. conversation about bio-engineered food (Flory). Wednesday, March 7 is a full day with Bay Buchanan, president of The American Cause, and Nadine Strossen, president of the ACLU sharing the stage with panels of students and faculty. Ejenobo Oke (art) begins Wednesday with a 9 a.m. slide show of controversial art (Wine Recital Hall). Thursday at 12:30 p.m., students will consider public funding of the arts (Flory). Here's the story and here's the Wednesday schedule:

11 a.m., Civil Liberties in a Time of War, Cordier

2 p.m., Controversial Social Issues, Wine

4 p.m., Student Speech Code Debate

Short month, P-card approvals are due. Because February is short on days, our P-card approvals are due sooner than usual. Last day for cardholders is March 5; last day for supervisor approvals is March 8. Business Office is asking us to do them now because of the shorter turnaround.

Brand-new Carter Alexander and mom, Jessica, are both doing fine, reports DeWayne Martin (ITS) about the birth of their 8-pound, 2-ounce son. He was born at 9:34 a.m. on Feb. 27. Carter’s 20 inches long, er, tall.

The faculty development presentation this Friday is “A Writing Community: Where Do We Begin, Where Do Our Students Begin?” by Jonathan Watson (English). 10 a.m., Flory Auditorium.

March 11 … that’s when Daylight Savings Time once again affects our calendar systems, especially Outlook. The federal government has declared that DST starts on the second Sunday of March and ends the first Sunday of November. ITS is preparing, but expect to repair some appointments manually. It is HIGHLY ADVISED that we print out our Outlook calendars next Friday before leaving campus, to use as a reference for accuracy. It is also possible our voice mail may stumble. For home PCs: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cp_dst. As always, contact the ITS Help Desk if needed.

Newly elected members of the Staff Organizational Committee (SOC): Barb Houser (safety/security), Carrie Makin (human resources), Linda Richards (library), Susie Sharfman (college advancement), Kelsey Swanson (admissions), Kari Weaver (business office) and Dottie Young (student development). One more new member will be announced later. Thanks to the service of Adam Hohman (admissions), who has resigned as chair; Allison Keating (ITS) will complete his term. Dave Good will complete Allison’s term as vice chair.

Our students are certain to bring us to applause next Friday, March 9, at the Dean's Student Scholarship Symposium. All  presentations are in the Science Center, beginning at 3 p.m., with reception and awards at 4:30 p.m. Topics range from Cleopatra and alendronate sodium to German Americans in World War I and Carolina chickadees. We'll also hear about wrist flexion in Ultimate Frisbee players, gypsy moths, vowel changes in the English language and the good versus the economics of charitable giving ... and so much more from 26 presenters! Look for posted schedules.

Events and Reminders ...Sandy Bendsen is sending us twice-weekly reminders about events on campus. The goal is to reduce all those e-mails and reminders. Still send your events to the MEMO Lady, who will publish more detail. Events and Reminders is a few-word listing, for receptions, recitals, special meetings, tournament games … not events regularly scheduled, such as chapel, convocations or scheduled athletic events. Send listings to Sandy.

Topic of the March SOC luncheon is the New Zealand trip Scott Strode (communication studies) led during January Session. Bring your lunch and co-workers to the Oakwood great room at noon, Wednesday, March 14. Please let Allison Keating (x5432) know if you plan to attend to ensure seating.

The FAFSA deadline is quickly approaching. March 10 is an important date -- that's when  FAFSA must be received by the processing center to be considered for state grant eligibility. Even non-residents should file in March so there are no delays in getting financial aid information. The form is online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. For a paper version or help, contact Financial Aid at x5066 or sfs@manchester.edu.   * Free Application for Federal Student Aid

It’s time for the spring walking challenge! Submit your time spent walking or running April 1 to April 15 to Health Services. Prizes! MEMO Lady is accepting challenges or walking buddies. Send walk/run totals for the 15 days to healthservices@manchester.edu by April 19. Questions? Tara Vogel or Kelly Hippensteel. Walk during this time and earn a wellness point.

The deadline looms for faculty grant opportunities … March 5. See the forms and information Dean Sharfman sent to all faculty in January.

Sale!!!! Hurry, before Dale Carpenter (HR) buys up all the great deals in the Campus Store! Some great clothing is drastically reduced, and there are 10-cent supplies and all kinds of other great deals as the store readies for moving to new digs in the College Union.

Our ad agency for our new i found marketing campaign – Asher Agency of Fort Wayne – won a gold Addy Award for the mail campaign to students. Here’s a link to the story. Notes our representative at the firm, Anthony Juliano: “Good work is always a collaboration with our clients, and that was very much the case with this one.”

Our students take spotlight … Jared Mobley had Best Student Paper at the Indiana Chapter of the American Fisheries Society conference. The project mentor is Jerry Sweeten (biology). Competition included master’s and Ph.D. students, too. The presentation was about smallmouth bass in the Eel River.

We’re building a Special Olympics team ... Adapted Physical Activity students in Kim Duchane’s class have started a new service-learning project – a Special Olympics team for youth with intellectual disabilities. The coaches have met the athletes and plan to begin track and field training this month in anticipation of a track meet in early May.

March 15 is Pick Up The Tab Day … the day when students’ tuition payments no longer cover the cost of their education, and donors “pick up the tab.” Events are planned from noon to 2 p.m. at the College Union.

A faculty info session on Indiana Campus Compact grants starts at 4 p.m. on March 15 in Winger 111. ICC Associate Director J.R. Jamison will discuss the opportunities and recent recipients of ICC grants will report.

Welcome newcomers! Mallika Klingaman, Financial Aid Counselor; Eileen Boekestein, Koinonia temporary

Manchester has the eye of the Indiana Student Education Association. We have two on the state board now, and three students have received scholarships … and, our SEA is Outstanding Chapter. Here’s the story. Congratulations to advisors Heather Schilling, Korrine Gust and Stacy Stacy Stetzel.

Congratulations Tony Feher (athletic training adjunct), who presents his abstract, "Ice towel application did not decrease core body temperature following vigorous exercise," in June to the National Athletic Trainers' Association in Anaheim, Calif. The abstract will be published in the Spring 2007 supplement of the Journal of Athletic Training.

These donors to The Manchester Fund will find their parking spaces easily in March: Dan Chudzynski (webmaster/designer), Ralph Lovett (custodian), Dave McFadden (executive vice president), Julie Talz (residence life), Beth Sweitzer-Riley (student development) and Kari Weaver (business office). For details about contributing to The Manchester Fund contact Rita Schroll, x5218.

The College Catalog now will list the institution, degree and date of degree of administrative staff. Please send that information to Registrar Lila Hammer by Wednesday, March 7.

Oldies but still goodies from recent MEMOs

Mark your calendars! for the all-staff meetings, when we’ll recognize service, learn what's going on, do a Q&A with President Switzer and chuckle a bit, although not necessarily in that order. All of the 45-minute meetings start promptly at 8 a.m., with coffee and sweets the half-hour beforehand to give us a chance to chat up folks from other parts of campus we rarely see.

                               Thursday, March 22 (spring break)

                               Thursday, June 28

                               Thursday, Oct. 18 (fall break)
