Tuition letters have gone out to students and their families. Despite rising utility and other costs, we have held the overall increase to less than 5 percent for 2008-09. Cabinet (not the business office) has based this decision on strategic priorities and budget realities.

MC Hotmail brings bigger mailboxes for students. The College will transition student e-mail to a Manchester-branded Hotmail account at noon on Wednesday, March 12. Students will get 100 times more capacity in their mailboxes and a new address: username@spartans.manchester.edu. We will disable the old student e-mail address on May 26. Here’s the link to FAQs. Before the end of the current semester, students need to forward their stored e-mail to their new Hotmail account and notify senders of their new address

What does this mean for us? The Hotmail is just for students. We get bigger Outlook mailboxes (and some other features) this summer. We need to change any students in our personal Outlook distribution lists to their spartans.manchester.edu address. ITS will take care of the distribution lists in the global address list.

Transitions ...

After 16 years here, Martha Judge is moving closer to home later this month as associate athletic director for Monmouth University in New Jersey. Martha has served the College as assistant and associate athletic director, senior women’s administrator, volleyball and women’s soccer coach (she began that program) AND as head softball coach. She was 2001 HCAC Coach of the Year. Notes Dean Sharfman: “We will sorely miss Martha’s compressive knowledge of Division III athletics, her passion for her students’ success and her love for the College.

Farewell reception: 3-5 p.m. Thursday, March 13 in the PERC

Kendra Marlowe will step into Martha’s cleats to lead our softball program this spring.

Joe Messer joins us next fall as assistant professor of accounting and business. With an MBA from Purdue University, he has many accomplishments, including as top leadership of  DVO, Extremity Solutions in Warsaw; Daehnfeldt Inc. international flower and vegetable breeding company; and Organiks certified organic products. The North Manchester resident serves on our President’s Advisory Council. In a nutshell: “The Accounting and Business Department is ecstatic to have Joe join their team,” notes Dean Sharfman.

Other stops include Florence, Sorrento, Pompeii and Rome. The Switzers are no newcomers to Italy, where they have treated each other to cooking classes.

We’ve ice, snow … and a final exam schedule! May 12 isn’t that far away, and we’re ready for it with a schedule. The schedule is on the Registrar’s page, or right here.

Before signing any contracts … All contracts involving the College and any outside vendor or business must be reviewed and approved by our treasurer, Jack Gochenaur, before they are signed. As you plan your project timetable, please allow two business days for the review, and longer for complicated contracts.

Manchester’s future teachers continue to excel at the state level. The MC chapter has received the “Local Excellence” award of the Indiana Student Education Association. In addition, Kelsey Morris was elected Region II representative for the 2008-09 state board. (Kelsey is MC chapter president.) Jeanna Collins (state board secretary) and Jenny Mevis (state board vice president) received Outstanding Seniors awards and scholarships. Juniors Melanie DeGrandchamp and Stacey Morris also received scholarships.

Congratulations to Katherine Tinsley (history), who will serve as program chair of the 2009 annual meeting of the Indiana Association of Historians. This year, she was a panelist on two round table discussions – “Teaching History to History Teachers” and “Keeping History Alive in the K-12 Classroom: What can Historians Do?”

Thinking about submitting a grant proposal? Step 1 is contact College Advancement. That helps ensure we are not seeking conflicting grants from foundations, corporations and agencies that could harm outcomes. College Advancement approval is routine, assuming there are no conflicts with other applications. Grant-seekers need to know:

       ·         All applications require approval by both a cabinet member and the president prior to submission to the funders.

       ·         All student/student organization fund-raising must have the approval of the vice president for College advancement.

       ·         The grant writer is responsible for fulfilling reporting requirements.

       ·         Grant checks must be deposited promptly with the Business Office.

       ·         The College is committed to adhering to the high reporting standards the IRS sets for independent colleges.

Contact Jay Nussel, x5211, in College advancement with questions or for assistance in researching funding sources.

Donate an Easter basket or goodies for the annual Northeast Indiana Alumni Directors Consortium Easter Basket Drive!  Each year, the group of eight colleges/universities delivers hundreds of Easter baskets to SCAN Inc. (Stop Child Abuse and Neglect) in Fort Wayne for distribution to area under-privileged children. Bring to the Alumni Office commercially wrapped items (nothing homemade) to be included in baskets. Student Alumni Council members will create. Or, bring filled baskets. March 14 is the deadline.

Jump start. Wow!   Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

Kudos to “unsung heroes” Elbert Sammons and Steve Walpole (physical plant). “They complete the “little” jobs behind the scenes that make all of our work much more efficient,” writes Lana Groombridge (exercise/sport sciences). ‘”From gluing on linoleum to hanging equipment hooks to attaching door handles, Elbert and Steve work on behalf of us all. Thanks so much!”

Fred Durden helped, too, when a physical plant team came to the rescue of a suite of ill students recently. Thanks!

Take me to Spartan Weekly!

Oldies but goodies from recent MEMOs ...

Those snow stranded on campus may want to take advantage of free, emergency housing available in East and Schwalm halls. The guest rooms are available for weather emergencies only, first-come, first-serve. Contact Conference Services (x5551) during the work week or Security (x5999) after hours.

What if weather forces us to cancel classes, or worse? As long as students reside on campus, we never will “close” campus, of course. But, if the weather indeed has impacted operation of the College, we will send out an all-campus e-mail and put the news on our home page, www.manchester.edu.

AND, we will alert area radio and TV stations

TV: Channel 21 (Indiana’s NewsCenter), WANE-TV Channel 15 and Fox Channel 55 in Fort Wayne; and WNDU TV Channel 16 in South Bend

Radio: NIPR on WBOI/WBNI, WAJI 95.1, WLDE 101.7, WOWO 1190 in Fort Wayne; WLZQ (Q101) in Warsaw; WKUZ 95.9 in Wabash
