HELP Desk                   MEMO Oldies but Goodies

MEMO Archives

It only takes a minute to set up our new voice mail. Just dial 4180 (or 982-4180 off-campus) and listen to the lady explain the easy process. Check your e-mail from Michael Case for the initial password. You must say your name at the prompt so your name goes into the directory. Then, record your message. Test it from an off-campus phone; it should switch to voice mail after four rings. As always, HELP Desk is ready to help, x5454, or on the web. (We’ll learn how to do the internal, vacation etc., messages soon.)

Stem cell research. Cloning. Genetic engineering … Bioethics expert and consultant Dr. Eric Meslin will lead convocation this Monday, March 26, with a presentation on rights, responsibilities and reaction.  Here’s more about Professor Meslin’s visit to campus. (He’s director of the IU Center for Bioethics.)

Our campus web calendar is still down, and we are unable to read it much less update it. ITS folks are working on it. But please continue to inform the Memo Lady of events, and she will update the calendar as soon as it is working again.

You’ll want to follow the My place @ MC link on our home page … it’s a real treat. More than 160 of our current students have filled out profiles about why they came to Manchester and what they are finding here. Their pride in this College is a great jump start on any day. Any current student can put a profile on this incredible admissions tool.

Postage rates are rising, and we’re getting new classifications. Letters will cost 41 cents, a 2-cent increase. Everything will cost more … beginning May 14 … especially Express Mail and those 9x12 envelopes. Our postage gurus, Brenda Carver, x5206,  and Quentin Moudy, x5207, recommend folding letters into those standard No. 10 envelopes rather than flat mailing whenever possible. Click here for rate details, and tips on minimizing these rate increases.

Leftovers for Second Harvest. Many of those big stainless steel work and serving tables and other equipment from the old kitchen are doing new duty with Second Harvest Food Bank of East Central Indiana. Second Harvest folks hauled out the equipment Tuesday, with the help of Gary Heckman, who did the unhooking and unplugging. Kids Café, that serves about 500 kids after school at seven sites in five counties, will especially benefit.

Can’t find your mail? Chances are, you’re looking in the wrong place. Mailboxes now where they belong, in the College Union, just beyond the restrooms and Campus Store on the lower level. Just go in the grand main entrance, turn left toward The Oaks, and right immediately. Keep walking to the end of the hall and look left.

Good Friday also means an early check run. The Business Office will print checks on Wednesday, April 4. That means all approved invoices and check requests are due to Susie Snep (accounts payable) by noon Tuesday, April 3 to make that week’s check run.

April 9-20 … those are the dates for registration for 2007 summer and fall classes and for 2008 January Session and spring classes. Read all about it here, on the Registrar’s site, complete with class lists, etc. Students have received e-mail notice that course request forms will appear in their MC mailboxes next week, and urging them to schedule with their academic advisors.

The handiwork of Jenna Oke’s class in Elementary Arts & Crafts will bring grins and maybe even a chuckle or two. The display is downstairs in the library, with colorful paper critters and handcrafted booklets. First-year student Kate Brelje set up the display, and will rotate the artwork as time goes on.  Check it out!

New College Union views are coming soon, as we find new spots for Spartan Cam to show off the activity inside the building. Meanwhile, those two cameras are dark, or actually, white. The outside camera continues to show construction, and the mall/Petersime Chapel and Ad Building main hall cameras (Hi, Terri!) remain focused, too.

Plans for Peace Week are ambitious and exciting. Click here for a preview, posted on new Peace Week website. Matt Guynn is the in-residence trainer for the week, and, of course, expect a concert on the mall. More to come. Peace week is April 22-28.

To the Manchester Faculty and Staff, Thank you for the plant basket and many expressions of your concern following the death of my mother. We appreciate your kindness and thoughts during this time.

– Deb Hustin and Dave Hicks

Manchester College Community Club will hear about “Going for Fulbrights and Other Amazing Scholarships” on Wednesday, April 4. Wow!     Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

Cheers, as while tending to the technology challenges of a new structure waking up, our ITS team got an entire new voice mail system up and running, amid their worst voice mail nightmare followed by vendor delay. Watch for the new video, Sleepless in the Switch Room, staring Telephone Guy Larry Gyrion.

Take me to Spartan Weekly!

MC's weekly update by Doug Shoemaker, sports information director

Oldies but still goodies from recent MEMOs ...

Early Alert alert … Do not hesitate to give our Early Alert people a heads-up about struggling students. Our team stands ready to help students with academic, emotional, family, personal, adjustment, behavior and physical challenges. We are not using this service enough! Anybody can refer a student to EarlyAlert: EarlyAlert@manchester.edu Questions? Danette Norman Till, x5306.

About those grades … MCConnect is now available for mid-semester grade entry through Tuesday, March 27. It is not available Tuesday morning, March 20, as we upgrade the software at that time. Hard-copy grade rosters are due no later than 5 p.m., Tuesday, March 27. Note new grade entry details; contact Registrar Lila if you lost/deleted her e-mail.

Mark your calendars! for the all-staff meetings, when we’ll recognize service, learn what's going on, do a Q&A with President Switzer and chuckle a bit, although not necessarily in that order. All of the 45-minute meetings start promptly at 8 a.m., with coffee and sweets the half-hour beforehand to give us a chance to chat up folks from other parts of campus we rarely see.
