In good company. Our women’s basketball team breakfasted with WNBA guard Shanna Zolman Crossley this morning, before her convocation talk. (Our Spartans were autographing the basketball for an auction.) That’s Shanna in the jeans jacket at the end of the table.

Add Sundaes in the Park to the wealth of events the College is hosting this spring. This annual collaboration among the College, Chartwells, the North Manchester Parks Department and Civic Band is at Warvel Park at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 28. Sundaes in the Park is always on a Saturday. Suzanne Gindin and Reggie Smith will conduct. Free! Bring blankets/chairs and applause.

Parents of two of our students sent this note to our president:I just wanted to drop you a note to tell you that the new union is wonderful. We stopped in last Saturday before the track meet to check out the new bookstore, it's GREAT!  You should be very proud of all the improvements Manchester has made just in the past few years. The girls are enjoying the new union very much.  Just thought you might like to hear from a parent's point of view. Keep up the good job!”

Let’s come together for an All-College Meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, April 10. Faculty and staff are invited to gather at 4 p.m. for the one-hour agenda in Cordier Auditorium. No surprises, just important updates on marketing, admissions, budget progress, advancement and the vision statement. The plan is to gather once a semester for such presentations.

MC offers a major in biotechnology now – by reconfiguring the wealth of natural science courses already offered, and by adding a course. The details are on our home page, or click here.

How to collect messages on our new voice mail: click here for the manufacturer’s brochure, or, for a simple, nifty graphic created by our telephone guru Larry Gyrion, click here.

Have you seen Manchester's e-newsletter for alumni and friends? Here’s the link, which links to all kinds of things Manchester: http://www.manchester.edu/OCA/newsletter  Designed by webmaster Dan Chudzynski with Jeri Kornegay, and Jay Nussel, Gary Montel and Michael Eastman in OCA. Deb Stolzfus (alumni office) is fielding the scores of responses.

Here’s a link to the final exam schedule, which also is posted on the Registrar’s website. Faculty is reminded to review the schedule with their advisees and students --- especially the Special Exam Times at the bottom of the page. Hard copies of the exam schedule are mailed ONLY to adjunct faculty.

We’re seeing all kinds of new opportunities in the College Union, including use of The Café, that inviting room off the north side of Haist Commons. For now, the room will remain an open dining room. Soon, Conference Services will offer a way to reserve tables in The Café and Haist Commons for special mealtime gatherings – but not the entire area, and not yet. Next fall, we’ll be able to reserve conference and meeting rooms on the second floor.

Gather the youngsters for our first book reading in the Campus Store Here’s the link to the story about this super idea for showing off our new facility and its reading room, 200+ children’s books, and the talents of students in Heather Schilling’s kiddy lit class.  First reading is 10 a.m. this Saturday, April 14, of If You Give a Moose a Muffin.

Send in your volunteer hours! The Office of Volunteer Services collects and reports on all community service hours  students, faculty and staff complete during the academic year. The service need not be related to campus. Did you volunteer at church? Coach Little League? Help out at MC beyond your regular responsibilities? E-mail where you did your service and number of hours completed to ovs@manchester.edu by April 20.

Parking shuffles! Faculty and staff now may park in four slots behind Calvin Ulrey formerly marked with 30-minute parking signs. (One 30-minute sign remains.) And, we’ve added four visitor parking spots right by the west drive of the Science Center. Only one month remains to get a Manchester Fund parking spot. See Rita Schroll in College Advancement to learn how to turn your donation into a parking spot.

Future teachers from high schools all over the area will know that Manchester College is the place to Celebrate Teaching, at a workshop on Saturday, April 28. Teachers from schools throughout the area are presenters. Of course, our education students will be close at hand. Details: Heather Schilling, x5056.

Know a student who is considering leaving MC? Please refer that student’s name to Early Alert earlyalert@manchester.edu. Our Early Alert team will attempt to connect with the student to learn if retaining her/him is a possibility.  Here are some aids for conversations with students.

Cubs (or Mariners) fans will want to join A Day at Wrigley Field on Thursday, June 14. We have 50 upper deck seats reserved in infield Section 511. Cost for the bus and tickets is $55, with bus leaving the College Union at 8:30 a.m., returning at 11 p.m. Lunch on your own on Navy Pier. Contact the Alumni Office, x5223.

The Manchester Investment Club will have its monthly meeting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18 in the College Union. There may be money to spend. Prospective faculty and staff members are welcome.

 Human Resources

Faculty and staff openings: Assistant Professor of Exercise and Sport Sciences/Athletic Trainer, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies, Assistant Professor of Accounting and Business, Visiting Professor of Sociology, Director of Academic Support, Peace Studies Intern, Offensive Line Football Coach Intern

Go to job descriptions

Student supervisors: If your student employees enter their own time, make sure they complete their entries prior to when you do your approvals. Communicate with your students regarding their time entry

Wow!     Yea!   Kudos   You’re Awesome!  Thanks!

Students in one of Marcia Benjamin’s communication studies classesvolunteered that they feel very grateful for the ITS staff we have, that their needs are both considered and addressed well. I agreed and gave examples of how Michael Case has come to faculty meetings with well-prepared presentations, enthusiasm for new rollouts and respect for the audience's point of view … All this is both unusual and remarkable compared to my friends' and colleagues' experiences at other schools and companies. They are envious when I share this information.”

Take me to Spartan Weekly!

MC's weekly update by Doug Shoemaker, sports information director

Oldies but still goodies from recent MEMOs ...

It only takes a minute to set up our new voice mail. Just dial 4180 (or 982-4180 off-campus) and listen to the lady explain the easy process. Check your e-mail from Michael Case for the initial password. You must say your name at the prompt so your name goes into the directory. Then, record your message. Test it from an off-campus phone; it should switch to voice mail after four rings. As always, HELP Desk is ready to help, x5454, or on the web. (We’ll learn how to do the internal, vacation etc., messages soon.)

It’s time to report about events and activities for the 2007-2008 school year. Here’s the form to send to Shanon Green (Student Activities) so the calendar is complete. Student clubs and organizations need to get the information in now, so Student Activities can reserve venues. All other groups make their own arrangements through Conference Services … but don’t forget to let Shanon know the dates for the calendar! Deadline is Monday, May 7.

Mark your calendars! for the all-staff meetings, when we’ll recognize service, learn what's going on, do a Q&A with President Switzer and chuckle a bit, although not necessarily in that order. All of the 45-minute meetings start promptly at 8 a.m., with coffee and sweets the half-hour beforehand to give us a chance to chat up folks from other parts of campus we rarely see.
