About 70 works are in this great MC student art show in Link Gallery and tucked into spaces on the second and third floors of Winger. A juried show opens May 7, but much of the work already is on display, with seniors featured. Oils, charcoal, watercolor, water fountains, books, prints, photographs, textiles, sculpture, paper artwork, ceramics ...  by students of myriad majors. That’s Barb Burdge (social work), checking out the work of one of her students.

MC’s schedule is brimming with activities this week ... from Peace Week, to Spartan Day for prospective students to professional workshops to the Concert on the Mall, Sundaes in the Park, Relay for Life, student recital, Student Leadership Banquet, choral concert, athletic events, CoB Regional Youth Conference ... and lots more. Keep an eye on Campus Calendar!

We have three new Fulbrights, and a possible fourth! That brings MC student success in this exhausting and complex premier recognition of brilliance to 22 Fulbrights… and counting. Our latest scholarship winners are Sam Cox, who will teach English in Germany, and Stacey Carmichael, who will teach English in South Korea. Rachel Paske, a 2004 grad, will teach in Germany.

Faculty will celebrate the service of four colleagues on Friday, May 4. It will be a challenge to keep the program under 12 hours, considering the honorees include Professor Jim Adams (art), who has served the college 50 years, Professors Robert Pettit (sociology/social work) and Leonard Williams (political science), with 25 years each, and Professor Emerita Dagny Boebel (English), with 20 years! The program begins at 10 a.m. in Flory Auditorium.

Tipoff for the  ABC vs. Peace Studies Basketball Game is at 8 p.m. today in the PERC. A $3 ticket gives a chance at a four-course Italian meal for two prepared and hosted by Jo and Dave Switzer or a basketball signed by WMBA player Shanna Crossley and the MC basketball teams. The ticket supports Charis House shelter for women and children.

Sundaes in the Park is this Saturday afternoon, in Warvel Park in North Manchester. The weather is predicted to be lovely for this annual community gathering of band music and ice cream sundaes. Here are the details for the free 2 p.m. party. Bring lawn chairs or a blanket. Thanks to the Manchester Civic Band, MC Symphonic Band, Chartwells and NM Parks and Recreation.

“Andrea Numbers and Brogan McMullen received real-world job experience thanks to their internships” writes the Indiana Chamber in a feature story about two Manchester students on its INTERNetwork website. The link:  www.indianachamber.com/email/indianainternnet/manchester.htm

Service learning for the real world. A student non-profit organization is collecting funds to create, decorate, equip and furnish an activity center for children in Charis House shelter for women. Students in Brad Pyrah’s non-profit management class have formed Caring for Charis for  their transformation this Saturday of the shelter basement into an activity center. (Currently, the children play in the hall and underfoot.) Art students of Jenna Oke will add their artistry, RHA students will help with labor, Schwalm 2nd Floor bought children’s books … and more are giving time and money. Contact: caringforcharis@gmail.com or x5303.

17 minutes, that's only how  long the first budget meeting lasted, under the guidance of Jack Gochenaur, pictured. Our budgets are due May 11, and must be filed electronically to Jenny Birner, x5713. The faculty budget officer meeting is 4 p.m. today in Winger 111. A final meeting is 3 p.m. Wednesday in Flory Auditorium, for any budget officer.

Summer is accident-prone, making our Blood Drives all that more important. To donate blood on Tuesday, May 2 contact Jeremy Raymond to schedule a time. Or, just drop by the Garver Lobby, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Scheduling helps planning.)

It’s a new voice mail system, NOT a new phone system. Our sleepless ITS folks replaced only the voice mail module, removing Call Pilot and creating a connection to a new voice mail server. There are no changes to the services offered to our office phones.

Scheduling in Outlook? Please get to the point. Inviting others to a meeting? Remember that Outlook calendars, unless fully opened, only have room for a word or two. Starting meeting invitations/scheduling with “Meeting with” pretty much fills the space. Put the topic first. Meeting participants who change the title on their calendars to something more meaningful will find that their calendars will “eat” any meetings subsequently rescheduled.

Vacation undoubtedly helped designer Brenda Carver amass 1,220 minutes to win the 2007 Walkathon. During the 15-day period, runner-up Tonya Moyer logged 990 minutes. Student winner was Melanie DeGrandchamp with 1,500 minutes. Nobody else was even close. Which probably was why Health and Counseling Services staff won their challenge to their student employees. Library staff also won their student challenge. Other staff/faculty participants: Tara Vogel, Shannon Green, Linda Richards, Kelly Hippensteel, Danette Norman-Till.

Welcome! Kathleen Smith, Koinonia Program Coordinator; Chris Schott, PC Support Technician

Six outstanding Manchester College students will receive Kauffman Memorial Scholarships to undertake a special project abroad or in New York City. Click here for a link to the story.

U.S. House candidate Dr. John McGoff is visiting campus Wednesday, April 25. The former Marion County coroner is challenging U.S. Rep. Dan Burton in the 2008 Republican primary. Dr. McGoff will speak to Heather Schilling’s education class at 8 a.m., then to Jerry Sweeten's environmental science class at 9 a.m. He’ll return to campus for lunch.

Honors Convo approaches. Look for Tim McElwee (peace studies) and Heather Schilling (education) to tell us why they teach, at Honors Convocation on Monday, May 7. Our student speakers are Sam Cox and Miranda Ford. Faculty will robe, parents will visit, we’ll all cheer our outstanding seniors, Honors Program students and others who have achieved extraordinary success this academic year. Faculty assemble in the Cordier basement.

Vicki Eastman (education) received the Holland Scholarship Award on April 22 at the annual state conference in Evansville of the Alpha Epsilon State Organization of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. The award is given annually for graduate studies in education. Vicki has been a member for more than 15 years and involved in the Delta Kappa Gamma Society in Ohio, Virginia and Indiana.

Harper Olivia Twomey joined the Manchester family on April 17, at 6 pounds, 11 ounces and 19½ inches tall. She and Mommy Heather (accounting/business) are doing fine. So is Daddy Scott.

Return Library materials by Wednesday, May 23. Faculty may request renewal of materials checked out this school year, by e-mail or phone. Take in materials checked out before this school year for inventory and quick renewal. Leaving the College? Please take any personal reserve materials. Questions? Contact Linda Richards in Circulation, x5363.

Take me to Spartan Weekly!

MC's weekly update by Doug Shoemaker, sports information director

Oldies but still goodies from recent MEMOs ...

It’s time to report about events and activities for the 2007-2008 school year. Here’s the form to send to Shanon Green (Student Activities) so the calendar is complete. Student clubs and organizations need to get the information in now, so Student Activities can reserve venues. All other groups make their own arrangements through Conference Services … but don’t forget to let Shanon know the dates for the calendar! Deadline is Monday, May 7.

Help ITS prepare its lab computers for your software needs by giving them a heads-up. They’ll want to test your software on Vista and Office 2007 so the student labs are well-prepared for the next academic year. Faculty should forward anticipated software needs to the Help Desk at helpdesk@manchester.edu
