TWO Fulbrights! Tim
Polakowski and Andrew Haff will teach English as a second language
(ESL) next year with the U.S. government’s prestigious Fulbright
scholarships. That makes 25 student Fulbrights for Manchester
College, continuing our extraordinary leadership in
Indiana in achieving these scholarships. Tim will teach in Korea;
Andrew will teach in Vietnam. Thanks to the continuing Fulbright
guidance of Kendall Rogers (religion/philosophy).

Dr. C. James Bishop, professor emeritus of history, died Tuesday.
The scholar enriched the College for 31 years, including hosting
numerous January session classes to Russia and Eastern Europe. Jim
was 72. A service of celebration for his life begins at 3 p.m. this
Sunday, May 4 in Petersime Chapel.
Here is a link to the obituary.
The
new College Catalogs are out, brimming with so much to
learn about Manchester, thanks to hours and hours and hours of
dedication by Kim Meyer (academic affairs), Registrar Lila and
designer Brenda Carver. Don’t you just love the

Dial 6
has arrived early. Instead of dialing “9,” early birds
are getting used to dialing “6” to get an off-campus or
long-distance line. The official change-over is Monday, May 5. Why?
to reduce the growing number of unintended 9-1-1 calls. (Don’t
forget to re-set fax and credit card terminals.)
How flexible is your summer?
The College again is offering flexible summer schedules for staff
members who make the appropriate arrangements with supervisors,
ensuring customer service continues its excellence. Explore the
possibilities! Let’s see, I could work four 10-hour days and garden
on Fridays. Or four 9-hour days and a half day on Wednesdays. Or
take shorter lunch breaks to gain an afternoon every other week. Or
… !!!! Imagine the gas we would save! Child-care costs saved!
Imagine the smiles! The
calendar is June 2 through July 31.
The Oaks is open this summer.
The weekday hours likely will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with
made-to-order deli sandwiches, salads, chips, cookies and brownies
and other desserts, coffee and specialty drinks. The Oaks will close
for the week following finals and will re-open Tuesday, May 27.

Does this faculty member look familiar? John Deal
“returns” as assistant professor of economics. He has served as
chair of the Department of Economics and will not forsake us for the
East Coast after all! John joined us in fall 2005, with particular
interest in agriculture and development economics.
Mark Huntington will chair
the Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences next year, a complex
challenge carried masterfully by Lana Groombridge, who is retiring.
Mark also is curriculum director for athletic training.
Graduating senior Lindsey Bryant
will help coordinate student employment this summer, in Carrie
Makin’s absence. She is no newcomer to our HR department, but will
appreciate our patience and understanding.

Tutors sought … Student
tutors are needed for study tables next fall. Know a student who
would be great at this important aid to success? The student should
have earned at least a 3.0 in the course she/he would tutor. Send
suggestions to
Sandy Bendsen
at the Success
Center.
Remember to use the
SuccessNet
online form when referring students instead of
e-mailing or calling in the information. Why? Because on-line
communication to the SuccessNet team is the most efficient and
effective method. Consider bookmarking the site.

Those who have filled the positions will want to get the paperwork
signed and returned as soon as possible: Just send them to HR, in
hopes of getting all yellow cards returned by May 11. All students
