Alumni Days are next up … and we’re
invited,
especially to join in applause of the Alumni Honor Award recipients
at a reception and banquet on Thursday, May 29. Honorees are Nelda
Rhoades ’73 Clark, Robert Curry ’76,
Nadine S. Pence
’76,
Eric Huffman ’71 and Michael L.
Kelly ’70. More than 100 guests already are registered.
Staff/faculty tickets are complementary, just let the
Alumni Office
know you plan to attend. A guest is included in the invitation. AND,
the 50th reunion of the Class of 1958 has at least 100 registered
for a full schedule of events. Also gathering are at least 60 alumni
and friends of the Classes of 1938, 1943, 1948 and 1953.
Here’s a link to the
schedule.
Dave Friermood is on the mend
after successful surgery last week. He’s roaming the halls, wanting
to be with us, and just plain antsy … but behaving because he has no
choice. He’s in Room 3727 at Indiana University Hospital, 550
University Boulevard, Indianapolis, IN. Here’s his room number:
317-274-9236. His church and the College will coordinate plans for
his care when he comes home, but no details yet.
To offer to pitch in, contact
Chris Garber, but wait
a couple of days, until we know when Dave’s coming home.
Budgets are due May 23 to
Jenny Steele in the
Business Office. Our U Drive, in the BUSINESS
folder, has instructions for MC Connect, the 2008-2009 Budget
Request Form and definitions of general ledger expense accounts. We
all should have our budget input forms (with current-year amounts
through March). Fill them in and submit them by May 23. Cabinet
supervisors will work from those forms.
Dean’s Award for Excellence.
These 10 faculty members soared above and beyond the call in so many
ways this past school year. Dean Sharfman told faculty at the
awarding of $1,000 to each of the 10 recipients: “This decision of
whom to select is among the most agonizing that I make because I
know how many of you offer so much to Manchester College.” Honored:
Jim Brumbaugh-Smith (mathematics/computer science), Rusty
Coulter-Kern (psychology), Josh Dzurick (exercise/sport sciences,
women’s basketball), Mark Huntington (exercise/sport sciences),
Susan Klein (chemistry), Tim Ogden (accounting/business), Jena Oke
(art), Stacy Stetzel (education), Jerry Sweeten (biology) and
Jonathan Watson (English).
Faculty Ambassadors Extraordinaire.
Enrollment management has honored three faculty members for truly going that extra mile in recruiting new students –
from telephone calls to e-mails, campus visits, letters and
persistence. Receiving much applause and $500 each: Tim Ogden
(accounting/business), Stacy Stetzel (education) and Debra Lynn
(music). Thanks!

Kendall
Rogers
completes 29 years with the College this month, and
enters another phase of his academic career, as professor of
historical studies at Bethany Theological Seminary. Kendall, a
Manchester graduate, has accomplished a string of impressive
publications, and courses in religion and philosophy. His legacy is
crowned by our success in the Fulbright program. Under his
leadership, 25 graduates have received Fulbright scholarships,
garnering one of the highest per-student ratios in the nation.
Faculty retirements total 231 years
of service. In case you missed some of the announcements,
six faculty members have retired or will retire at the end of this
school year: Jim Adams (art), Lana Groombridge (exercise/sport
sciences), Ingrid Rogers (modern languages), Chuck Stanton
(mathematics/computer science), Scott Strode (communication studies)
and Tom Jarman (exercise/sport sciences). The Board of Trustees has
awarded emeriti status to all six.

General education, sliced with a
sandwich buffet … that’s what’s on the agenda for the
faculty meeting from 1 to 5 p.m. this Thursday, May 15, starting in
the Lahman Room of the College Union.
Course evaluation deadline is this
Friday, May 16.
Students received the evaluation via email. Please remind
them we crave their feedback, and that faculty do not have access to
their responses, just the compilations. Only 62 percent in so far.
Food, fun and, oh yes … grades!
The hard deadline for hard copies of grades is 5 p.m. Monday, May
19. MCConnect is now open for grade entry; that deadline is 4:30
p.m. next Monday. Treats in the Registrar’s office – stop by!

accomplishments are many and extraordinary!

About that 7.5 earthquake in China …
We have no students in the BCA program in Dalian, China at this
time. The quake was near Chengdu, not near the northeast coast city
of Dalian. Thanks for the update, Thelma!
Send classroom and other academic
room requests for fall semester to Registrar Lila. She
needs to know your needs: moveable chairs/desks, rooms with tables,
smart rooms, etc. Don’t assume she’ll remember your preferences.
First-come, first-served.

Student Alumni Council needs our
help … with recommendations of students who will help us
engage alumni, donors and other friends of the College. Campus
leaders, students who are experiencing “all that is Manchester,” you
get the idea. The Council organizes and participates in many events,
from Homecoming, alumni gatherings and 101 Days to Commencement to
projects. Suggest names

Lisa Gregory (alumni
affairs), x5203.
Glenn
Sharfman will join other chief academic officers across the
country for the 2008-2009 ACE Institute of the American
Council on Education. They’ll meet first the last weekend of July
near Minneapolis, then again in early February in D.C. and finally
in mid-June 2009 in Los Angeles.
