We gathered Monday to send good wishes with Denise Howe, who
leaves us after almost 20 years of dedication to the College, most
recently as director of learning support services. Among her
grateful fans is Scotty Kelly (pictured here) who is graduating this
weekend! Denise has worked with Brethren Colleges Abroad,
Admissions, and our Learning Center.
Faculty assembles for baccalaureate
in the Wine Recital Hall lobby at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. (Rain site is
Cordier basement.) Commencement assembly is also in Wine, at 2 p.m.
(Rain site is PERC offices upstairs.) Check our home page for
graduation details.
5 p.m. Monday, May 21 …
That’s the absolute last minute for “hard copy” grades delivery to the
Registrar. Congrats to Jeremy Markham (wellness, exercise,
badminton), first in. Grade reporting on MCConnect ends at
4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 21. Note new details for on-line grade
entry, etc.
Right
now, diplomas are on the Registrar’s “banquet table,” but come
Monday, food, lots of it!
Summer Hours. Departments may switch to flexible work
schedules that permit employees to vacate one afternoon a week this
summer, beginning Monday, May 21 to Aug. 24. Providing services, of
course, takes priority in setting these summer work schedules.
Individual departments will carefully plan their rotation schedules,
times and appropriate signage.

Thanks, Sonia, for all you do and have done and will do
before you leave us in July. “She has done an absolutely exemplary
job throughout her time here and especially during this current
semester while serving as Interim Campus Pastor,” notes Beth
Switzer-Riley, vice president for student development.
Henry Winkler knows about Manchester College and our Indiana
Reading Corp tutors. Carole Miller-Patrick heard on the radio Monday
that The Fonz and author of books especially for boys was going to
be in Mishawaka that night. She zipped up to the book-signing,
Manchester College packet and business card in hand. She told
Winkler all about MC and how his series about young Hank Zipzer is
just perfect for boys. After watching the youngsters mesmerized by
Winkler and his book reading, Carole bought up 60 of his books. Our
160 reading coaches (23 area schools) will find good use for these!
Here’s a link to more about Winkler and Hank Zipzer.
Alumni Days …
are when we
turn campus over to our older alumni to reminisce, explore and
laugh. This year they are Wednesday and Thursday, May 30-31.
Here’s a link to events, but faculty and staff might be
particularly interested in the Alumni Honor Awards banquet at 5:45
p.m. on May 31. Contact the Alumni Office for reservations, x5223.
The 50-year reunion is for the Class of 1957, of course. Other
reunions are for
Classes of 1937, 1942, 1947 and 1952. Many will stay in Helman and
Oakwood residence halls
MC accommodates for success. The Class of 2007 includes 11
students with documented disabilities, three are graduating with
honors! This amazing achievement is possible partly because of the
support and assistance they received from faculty, staff and other
students.
Class evaluations: How did you do? Don’t forget to remind students to complete their course evaluations.
Remind them during finals, or send them e-mail reminders. So far,
the return rate is low … less than 70 percent. The dean’s door
closes on accepting class evaluations this Friday, May 18.
Welcome to the staff!
Jena
R. Eichenlaub, Summer Conferences Hall Director; Jennifer L. Fisher,
Assistant Director for Internships
Janie Fricke will perform in concert on the Cordier stage at
7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20 in yet another barnstormer by
Conference Services. How did they do that? Well, she’s a local gal.
$20 reserved seating, no discounts or student/staff/faculty
freebies. Reservations x5551.
Staff, mark your calendars for Thursday, June 7 … the Staff
Appreciation Picnic is noon to 3 p.m., filled with food, Bingo,
euchre, relays, tricycle races, bocce ball, softball, badminton,
horseshoes, croquet, trivia, games, prizes and fellowship. We’ll
carry in our food offerings, Jo will provide grilled meat. South
patio of the Science Center.
Spring has sprung … and so have U.S. Postal Service rates!
Click on
this handy chart from
Quentin Moudy, manager of Printing Services, for the details.
It’s called shape-based pricing. Remember Quentin’s suggestions for
dealing with the increase, such as folding sheets so they fit in a
No. 10 envelope instead of using the large flat mailing.
Manchester Magazine is
taking a big hit with this rate increase … the cost of that mailing
has soared 36 percent.

Speak up! Need a movable desk, a special table, a smart room for your
fall class? Don’t forget to tell the Registrar. Don’t
assume she’ll assume.
90th birthday greetings for Miriam Cable are being collected
by Beate Gilliar (English), who is assembling a little booklet of
tributes. The 1939 grad and donor is a familiar face at College
events, and at community writing retreats and workshops.

Wow!
Yea!
Kudos You’re
Awesome! Thanks!
Kudos from
Leslie Pettit ’79 to Rick Espeset and the baseball team
for their unselfish and extremely helpful performance in
emptying her wet basement of boxes (both wet and dry). They
made quick work of a project that would have taken Leslie and her
mother days and days to accomplish.
I would
like to convey my gratitude
to the many people who helped during May Day weekend. I
was touched by the number of people who volunteered their time and
support to ensure things went smoothly. I was very proud to be
a part of such a wonderful team. Thank you all!
